USENIX TaPP '12 Call for Papers Submission Deadline Approaching

2012-03-07 Thread Lionel Garth Jones
We're writing to remind that the deadline for the 4th USENIX Workshop on
the Theory and Practice of Provenance (TaPP '12) is approaching. Please
submit your work by Saturday, March 31, 2012, at 5:00 p.m. EDT.
http://www.usenix.org/tapp12/cfpb

The Program Committee seeks short papers and vision papers describing
challenges for provenance research, brief descriptions of new
applications, proposals for mini-tutorials, pie-in-the sky research
ideas, and anything that will create a successful workshop.

TaPP '12 will bring together researchers and practitioners doing
innovative work in the area of provenance. With the deluge of digital
data we are currently experiencing, it has become increasingly important
to capture and understand the origins and derivation of data--its
provenance. Provenance provides important documentation that is an
essential part of the quality of data, and it is essential to the trust
we put in, for example, the data we find on the Web and the data that is
derived from scientific experiments.

The workshop may cover any topic related to theoretical or practical
aspects of provenance, including but not limited to: provenance in
databases, workflows, programming languages, security, software
engineering, or systems; provenance on the Web; real-world applications
of or requirements for provenance.

Please adhere to these guidelines on how and what to submit:
* Submissions should be self-contained and no more than 4 pages.
* If supporting material is needed, an extra 4 pages may be submitted,
but the committee will not be obliged to read them.
* All submissions should clearly indicate whether they are intended for
inclusion in the proceedings.

More information and submission guidelines are available at
http://www.usenix.org/tapp12/cfpb

We look forward to receiving your submissions!

Sincerely,

Umut A. Acar, Max Planck Institute for Software Systems

HotPar '12 Submission Deadline Approaching

2012-01-23 Thread Lionel Garth Jones
I'm writing to remind you that the submission deadline for the 4th
USENIX Workshop on Hot Topics in Parallelism (HotPar '12) is
approaching. Paper registration (abstract submission) is due Tuesday,
January 24, 2012, 11:59 p.m. PST. Full paper submission is due Tuesday,
January 31, 2012, 11:59 p.m. PST. There will be no extension of the
deadlines.

http://www.usenix.org/hotpar12/cfpb

HotPar '12 will bring together researchers and practitioners doing
innovative work in the area of parallel computing. Multicore and
multithreaded processors are pervasive, and core counts are increasing.
This trend is driven by limits on energy consumption in computer systems
and the poor energy performance of increasingly complex uniprocessors.
Parallel architectures can potentially mitigate these problems, but
larger core counts will be successful only if languages, systems, and
applications can take advantage of parallel hardware. Navigating this
change will require new parallel programming paradigms, new methods of
application design, new structures for system software, and new models
of interaction among applications, compilers, operating systems, and
hardware.

We request submissions of position papers that propose new directions
for research or products in these areas, advocate non-traditional
approaches to the problems engendered by parallelism, or potentially
generate controversy and discussion.

More information and submission guidelines are available at

USENIX TaPP '11 Program Available

2011-06-09 Thread Lionel Garth Jones
We'd like to invite to join us in Crete, June 20-21, 2011, for the 3rd
USENIX Workshop on the Theory and Practice of Provenance (TaPP '11).

Provenance provides important documentation that is an essential part of
the quality of data, and it is essential to the trust we put in, for
example, the data we find on the Web and the data that is derived from
scientific experiments.

The program includes 29 technical papers representing some of the
outstanding work in the area. Please note: unlike previous years, we
will have the papers within discussion sessions. We have selected 10
broad sub-areas of provenance research, and for each we will have a
tutorial followed by a short (5-minute) overview of papers that are
related to the sub-area. The topics include:

* Tutorial: Provenance and Causality
* Provenance Models
* Provenance in the Wild
* Provenance Exchange, Integration, and Querying
* Provenance Analytics
* Tutorial: Provenance-Rich Publications
* Security and Privacy
* Provenance and Archiving
* Annotation Algebras
* Do people want provenance and are they prepared to pay for it?

The full program is available at http://www.usenix.org/tapp11/proga

TaPP '11 promises to be an exciting workshop showcasing serious
cross-disciplinary, foundational, and highly speculative research.

We hope you will join us in Crete.

TaPP '11 Submission Deadline Approaching

2011-04-01 Thread Lionel Garth Jones
We're writing to remind you that the submission deadline for the 3rd
Workshop on the Theory and Practice of Provenance (TaPP '11) is quickly
approaching. Please submit all work by April 8, 2011, at 11:59 p.m. PDT.

More information and submission guidelines are available at
http://www.usenix.org/tapp11/cfpb

TaPP '11 will bring together researchers and practitioners doing
innovative work in the area of provenance. With the deluge of digital data
we are currently experiencing, it has become increasingly important to
capture and understand the origins and derivation of data--its
provenance. Provenance provides important documentation that is an
essential part of the quality of data, and it is essential to the trust
we put in, for example, the data we find on the Web and the data that is
derived from scientific experiments.

The workshop may cover any topic related to theoretical or practical
aspects of provenance, including but not limited to: provenance in
databases, work flows, programming languages, security, software
engineering, or systems; provenance on the Web; or real-world
applications of or requirements for provenance.

The Program Committee is determined to make TaPP '11 a real workshop at
which new ideas are discussed and developed and where the participants
can learn how other subjects make use of provenance. While the workshop
will have online proceedings, the Committee does not want the workshop
to become another "mini-conference" that has nothing but paper
presentations. The Committee is eager to receive short papers and vision
papers describing challenges for provenance research, brief descriptions
of new applications, proposals for mini-tutorials, pie-in-the sky
research ideas, and anything that will create a successful workshop.
While brief and readable descriptions of research are encouraged,
recycled conference submissions are strongly discouraged.

TaPP '11 will take place June 20-22, 2011, in Heraklion, Crete, Greece,
the week after the meeting of ACM SIGMOD in Athens.

We look forward to receiving your submissions!

Peter Buneman, University of Edinburgh

WIOV '11 Call for Papers Submission Deadline Approaching

2011-03-11 Thread Lionel Garth Jones
We are writing to remind you that the submission deadline for the 3rd
Workshop on I/O Virtualization (WIOV '11) is quickly approaching. Please
submit all work by Monday, March 21, 2011, at 11:59 p.m. PST.

http://www.usenix.org/wiov11/cfpb/

While I/O systems have a long history of using abstraction to shield
applications from the intricacies of devices and storage systems, this
workshop's focus is on the interplay of I/O with virtualization and
cloud technologies. Our goal is to provide a forum to discuss the impact
and challenges of I/O virtualization along multiple dimensions,
including: the application domains in which virtualized solutions are
used and the subsystems involved; platform or hardware support for I/O
virtualization; the virtual machine monitor; the guest operating system;
the processor, GPU, memory, and I/O subsystems. Also of interest are
higher-level virtualization solutions, such as those concerning API
virtualization, new virtual I/O APIs like those used for cloud storage,
and innovative approaches to device virtualization in cloud computing
and in the mobile domain.

The committee also encourages the submission of short papers to update
WIOV 11 attendees on new efforts or approaches. Please label such
submissions accordingly.

TaPP '11 Call for Contributions Now Available

2011-03-01 Thread Lionel Garth Jones
The Program Committee for the 3rd Workshop on the Theory and Practice of
Provenance (TaPP '11) invites you to submit short papers on
ongoing work.

Submissions are due April 8, 2011, at 11:59 p.m. PDT.

More information and submission guidelines are available at
http://www.usenix.org/tapp11/cfpa

Tapp '11 will take place June 20-22, 2011, in Heraklion, Crete, Greece,
the week after the meeting of ACM SIGMOD in Athens.

We look forward to receiving your submissions!

WIOV '11 Call for Papers Now Available

2011-02-10 Thread Lionel Garth Jones
The Program Committee for the 3rd Workshop on I/O Virtualization (WIOV
'11) invites you to contribute your work.

Virtualization technology has grown beyond server systems to include
desktops, notebooks, and even mobile devices. The rich settings in which
virtualized systems are used range from cloud computing infrastructures
requiring access to high-end I/O devices like GPUs and networks to the
many devices present in embedded and mobile systems. Consequent
requirements imposed on I/O include the need for extreme-scale
performance in high performance or low latency systems; fairness in
device sharing in cloud and server systems, which includes online
methods for understanding the I/O behavior of applications; trusted I/O
both for cloud and for mobile systems; and low overhead and reliable
device access in the mobile or embedded domains.

While I/O systems have a long history of using abstraction to shield
applications from the intricacies of devices and storage systems, this
workshop's focus is on the interplay of I/O with virtualization and
cloud technologies. Our goal is to provide a forum to discuss the impact
and challenges of I/O virtualization along multiple dimensions,
including: the application domains in which virtualized solutions are
used and the subsystems involved; platform or hardware support for I/O
virtualization; the virtual machine monitor; the guest operating system;
the processor, GPU, memory, and I/O subsystems. Also of interest are
higher-level virtualization solutions, such as those concerning API
virtualization, new virtual I/O APIs like those used for cloud storage,
and innovative approaches to device virtualization in cloud computing
and in the mobile domain.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

* Hardware support for I/O virtualization
* Novel I/O device architectures for virtualization
* New software approaches to I/O virtualization
* Hardware and software methods for I/O device emulation
* Para-virtualized I/O device driver design for virtualization
* Virtual machine monitors' support for I/O

HotStorage '11 Call for Papers Now Available

2011-02-04 Thread Lionel Garth Jones

On behalf of the 3rd Workshop on Hot Topics in Storage and File Systems
(HotStorage '11) program committee, I would like to invite you to submit
papers that present a fresh look at file and storage technologies.

Storage systems continue to present important research challenges and
opportunities today. The rapid increase in the volume and variety of
digital data, the trend toward using commodity components rather than
custom-built hardware, the ability to insert new filesystem
functionality transparently in hypervisors, the emergence of persistent
storage memory technologies, the challenges of "big data," the rise of
distributed key-value stores (such as nosql), and the proliferation of
storage devices in consumer electronics all offer exciting opportunities
and new challenges.

We expect the workshop submissions to advocate fresh, unorthodox
approaches advancing the state of the art in file and storage systems
design. Ideas presented in the workshop should provide a new look at
storage technologies and eventually lead to work that will likely appear
in top-tier systems conferences. The HotStorage workshop aims to bring
together researchers interested in presenting their thoughts and
engaging in discussions with their colleagues.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
* Cloud storage
* Storage for virtualized datacenters
* Clustered storage architectures
* Storage for mobile and embedded systems
* Key-value and "nosql" storage
* Solid-state storage
* Archival storage
* Storage at home
* Search and data retrieval
* Storage security
* Caching, replication, and data consistency
* Interactions of storage systems and databases
* The challenges of "big data"
* Storage system performance modeling and prediction

USENIX HotPar'11 Submission Deadline Approaching

2010-12-21 Thread Lionel Garth Jones
On behalf of the Program Committee for the 3rd USENIX Workshop on Hot
Topics in Parallelism (HotPar '11), we'd like to invite you to submit
position papers.

HotPar '11 will bring together researchers and practitioners doing
innovative work in the area of parallel computing. Multicore and
multithreaded processors are the pervasive computing platform of the
future. This trend is driven by limits on energy consumption in computer
systems and the poor energy performance of conventional microprocessors.
Parallel architectures can potentially mitigate these problems, but this
new computer architecture will only be successful if languages, systems,
and applications can take advantage of parallel hardware. Navigating
this change will require new concurrency-friendly programming paradigms,
new methods of application design, new structures for system software,
and new models of interaction between applications, compilers, operating
systems, and hardware.

We request submissions of position papers that propose new directions
for research of products in these areas, advocate non-traditional
approaches to the problems engendered by parallelism, or potentially
generate controversy and discussion.

Paper registration (abstract submission) due: Sunday, January 16, 2011,
11:59 p.m. PST

HotCloud '10 Submission Deadline Approaching

2010-03-18 Thread Lionel Garth Jones

We're writing to remind you that submission deadline for the 2nd USENIX
Workshop on Hot Topics in Cloud Computing (HotCloud '10) program
committee is approaching.

Please submit your work by Tuesday, March 23, 2010.
http://www.usenix.org/hotcloud10/cfpb

Cloud computing has attracted a great deal of attention both from the
research community and from industry. The cloud computing paradigm has
evolved over the years from a basic IT infrastructure (data centers) to
platform as a service (PaaS), and then from software as a service (SaaS)
to complete service enablement on a hosted infrastructure (IaaS). At the
same time, virtualization has emerged as a key enabler for the cloud
computing paradigm. Several challenges arise in the design,
implementation, and deployment of virtualized clouds.

HotCloud will provide a forum for academics as well as practitioners in
the field to share their experience, leverage each other's perspectives,
and identifynew/emerging "hot" trends in this area.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following:

* Platform as a service
* Software as a service
* Infrastructure as a service
* Elasticity and availability in a cloud
* Multi-tenancy
* Storage cloud
* Charging models and economics
* Power-efficient ("green") computing for clouds
* Virtual appliance management and composition
* Monitoring, troubleshooting, and failure recovery
* Cloud management and configuration
* Programming models
* Security and privacy in clouds
* New applications for clouds
* Mobile clouds
* Cloud usage scenarios

SSV '10 Call for Papers Now Available

2010-03-12 Thread Lionel Garth Jones

On behalf of the 5th International Workshop on Systems Software
Verification (SSV '10) program committee, we'd like to invite you to
contribute papers that focus on finding real, applicable solutions to
systems software verification problems. Paper registration and abstracts
are due Friday, May 28, 2010, 11:59 p.m. Samoan time (UTC-11).

Industrial-strength software analysis and verification has advanced in
recent years through the introduction of model checking, automated and
interactive theorem proving, and static analysis techniques, as well as
correctness by design, correctness by contract, and model-driven
development. However, many techniques are working under restrictive
assumptions that are invalidated by complex embedded systems software
such as operating system kernels, low-level device drivers, or
microcontroller code.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers and developers
from both academia and industry who are facing real software and real
problems with the goal of finding real, applicable solutions. By "real"
we mean problems such as time-to-market or reliability that the industry
is facing. A real solution is one that is applicable to the problem in
industry and not one that only applies to an abstract, academic, toy
version of it. In this workshop we will discuss software analysis and
development techniques and tools; this forum will serve as a platform to
discuss open problems and future challenges in dealing with existing and
upcoming systems-level code.

Topics include but are not limited to:

* Model checking
* Automated and interactive theorem proving
* Static analysis
* Automated testing
* Model-driven development
* Embedded systems development
* Programming languages
* Verifying compilers
* Software certification
* Software tools
* Experience reports

Paper registration and abstracts are due Friday, May 28, 2010, 11:59
p.m. Samoan time (UTC-11).

IPTPS '10 CFP

2009-11-24 Thread Lionel Garth Jones

On behalf of the 9th International Workshop on Peer-to-Peer Systems
(IPTPS '10) program committee, we are inviting you to submit engaging
position papers on the current and future trends in peer-to-peer
systems.

Co-located with NSDI '10 in San Jose, CA, this one-day workshop provides
a venue in which to present and discuss peer-to-peer technologies,
applications, and systems and to identify key research issues and
challenges that lie ahead.

This year, the workshop's charter will be expanded to include topics
relating to self-organizing and self-managing distributed systems. This
is in response to recent trends where self-organizing techniques
proposed in early peer-to-peer systems have found their way into more
managed settings such as datacenters, enterprises, and ISPs to help deal
with growing scale, complexity, and heterogeneity. In the context of
this year's workshop, peer-to-peer systems are defined to be large-scale
distributed systems that are mostly decentralized, are self-organizing,
and might or might not include resources from multiple administrative
domains.

Papers will be selected based on originality, likelihood of spawning
insightful discussion, and technical merit. The program will include
presentations of position papers along with plenty of time for lively
discussion among the participants, as well as a demo session for working
systems.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

* Network and system support for peer-to-peer systems
* Self-organizing and self-managing distributed systems
* Adaptive algorithms and architectures for large-scale distributed
systems

* New applications and protocols for peer-to-peer systems
* Availability, robustness, performance, and scaling
* Security, privacy, anonymity, anti-censorship, and incentives
* Lessons drawn from experience with deployed peer-to-peer systems
* Measurement, modeling, and workload characterization

2009-08-20 Thread Lionel Garth Jones

The Program Committee for the the First USENIX Workshop on Sustainable
Information Technology (SustainIT '10) invites you to submit your
papers.

Increasingly, designers of computer systems ranging from small mobile
devices to massive datacenters are concerned with sustainable design,
including both power and life-cycle costs; these costs should include
manufacturing, operation, and disposal of IT systems.

We seek papers that evaluate energy-related issues and their
