Multilink DSL

2001-12-20 Thread Ted Sikora

Anyone know how or a link for setting up MP 'multilink' PPPoe DSL on
FreeBSD. I have PPPoe on FreeBSD-STABLE with 2 cards and DSL lines. How
can I connect the second modem on dc1 and join the packets to dc0?

/tmp on a ramdisk?

2000-07-28 Thread Ted Sikora

A while ago several people suggested using /tmp on a ramdisk along with
softupdates. Right now I am running several production servers with
4.1-STABLE with softupdates. I'm really happy with the performance. What
benefits would I realize using /tmp on a ramdisk?

Motif paging

2000-05-16 Thread Ted Sikora

It's been a while since I used mwm. I installed the OpenMotif Metrolink
binaries and have mwm running. It's just as solid as I remember it. One
problem I cannot get paging to work. On an old system I used to use the
following worked for paging:

Mwm*bitmapDirectory:/usr/X11R6/include/X11/icons

!*** panning stuff *

! setup which clients and icons are pinned

! Setup the panning menu
Mwm*GotoMenuColor*packing: PACK_COLUMN
Mwm*GotoMenuColor*orientation: HORIZONTAL
Mwm*GotoMenuColor*alignment: ALIGNMENT_CENTER

StarOffice source to be released.

2000-04-24 Thread Ted Sikora

I received the following from SUN Microsystems:

  ---Susan Grabau <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Thanks for your note. Here's a bit of an update.

We are planning on making the StarOffice source code available in the
next few months. This will enable OS/2 users and organizations to
migrate later versions of StarOffice to OS/2. Of course this strategy
will also enable interested parties to deploy StarOffice on any
operating system platform not supported by Sun.

  Best regards,

  Susan Grabau

4.0-STABLE?

2000-04-04 Thread Ted Sikora

I wanted to upgrade several production servers to 4.0 and follow the
stable branch. Has 4.0-STABLE been established yet or is stable still
RELENG_3? I planned on installing 4.0-RELEASE and then using CVSup with
RELENG_4.

If anyone's interested RealPlayer7 just came out today. It's works
excellent under Linux Emulation. Includes most of the features of the
Win/Mac versions and has a working plugin. I just installed it under
(ahem!)5.0-current with Netscape-4.72. I know some of you
will scoff(at linux emulation) but hey It's cool. All work and no
play

5.0 features?

2000-03-12 Thread Ted Sikora

Excerpt from Slashdot interview:
David Greenman and Mike Karels will be working together as
co-architects for the new system. As features are merged in, they will
be available for download at www.freebsd.org, and on "snapshot" CDROMs.
The completely merged system will be released as FreeBSD 5.0.

What kind of features and additions can we expect from the merged
systems in 5.0? It looks as though this has been in
the works for sometime. I think I read somewhere that SMP support would
be much improved?

I am sure of the FreeBSD Projects intentions but like the previous post
things can 'turn ugly fast with the greatest intentions' The fact a
for-profit company controlling it's movements is cause for concern.
(mozilla comes to mind) I use BSDI and love their products but what
happens when it continues to stagnate. I see this as a way to boost
their own flagship product only? at FreeBSD's expense. I may be wrong
but already I see my other favorite OS Slackware teetering on the edge
of obscurity. I wish them the best.

It is HOTTER under FreeBSD. Immediatelly upon boot-up it's 26F
hotter under FreeBSD than under Linux. Sometime after 3.4-RC and
now this started. (I follow the stable branch via CVSup) Under
3.3-STABLE the temerature was always the same as Linux...cool averaging
89F for the CPU's. Now it's over 113F under FreeBSD only. I know it's
wierd but the machine does not lie. Under Linux it's the same as before
87-89F.

No this is right after bootup. It started right after I did a make world
around Christmas or coinciding with 3.4-STABLE. It runs 26 degrees
hotter right from the get go. Linux still runs cool like always. FreeBSD
used to be exactly the same. I have a SMP board with 2 CPU's.

It runs at 87F on both CPU's and a 95F case temp under Linux regardless
of load maybe varies 3-4 degrees +-. It's extremely cool. FreeBSD was
just like that till I did a makeworld right around or after Christmas
then this started. FreeBSD runs 26F degrees hotter right after bootup
with nothing. Booting back to Linux it reverts back to the old
temps...cool. It's just FreeBSD.

Temperature

1999-12-29 Thread Ted Sikora

Here's a strange problem. I run Linux stable/development kernels
and FreeBSD-3-STABLE on a SMP dual-boot workstation. The machines
temperatures have always been in this range with either system:

87F CPU #0
87F CPU #1
95F Case Temp

Sometime last week or early this week the temperature under FreeBSD only
has changed to:

113F CPU #0
113F CPU #1
109F Case Temp
This is right after boot and varies 3-4 Degrees + while running.

During the night periodically my temp warning has been going off.
I have it set to 118F. This happens only under FreeBSD. Linux continues
to run cool at the old temperatures. Apparantly some code change has
caused this. Does anyone know exactly where I should look?
