If you're expecting the release on Wednesday, don't hold your breath.

okay, what do i do now? portupgrade depends on this package.

Update your port tree using cvsup of ports-all, update your index, and
install a current version of portupgrade. It doesn't depend on it. In
some respects, it is easier to pkd_delete the one you have installed
and install a current version.

only new passwords will be encrypted in blowfish. there is no way

2002-11-17 Thread Kevin D. Kinsey, DaleCo, S.P.
Someone's got their spam rules set pretty tight.

Check:

   a. Whether your SMTP server's domain is blackholed as a spam
source
 or relay.
   b. Whether the SMTP server is of a variety known to be often used
as a spam source or relay

I have had trouble with this also, because my ISP runs SMTPD on
Win2000 (a noted relay target); combine that with a subject line
containing !! or very many words at all, and they're routing it to
/dev/null, complete with sender notification.

Failing all else, set up a rule of your own.

i've been running through some tutorials on how to convert the passwords
from md5 to blowfish.

there's mention of the following to actually do the conversion:

cap_mkdb /etc/login.conf

however, i don't see the conversion. the tutorial mentions that the
password should start with $2$, but they still begin with $1$

how do i correct this?

Broadcom 440x NIC supported?

2002-11-17 Thread george
I have the asus A7v8x with onboard broadcom 440x 10/100 (not gig) chip
and was wondering if work is underway to support this NIC? (found notta in
LINT about it)

on another note I was able to get the sound working using the pcm driver
(great work)

there are some other devices also not detected such as the serial ata, smart
card reader.

I can live without the serial ata and smart card but not without a NIC.

thanks for the great OS.

I expect it depends on your SSH client, but on my systems you open a
console session on the local X-server, invoke 'ssh -X' and
then whatever remote X-windows application to project its display back to
your host:

% ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] -X
 [... login dialog ...]
% emacs &
%
 [another session is opened on my screen running 'emacs', and since I
"backgrounded" the remote app, the console remains live for further
commands.

Check 'man ssh'.

Depending on what type of X authorization you use, you may have to put the
remote login on a list of permitted users of your local display (xauth or
whatever).

Re: what does "open source" mean ?

2002-11-17 Thread rens . emmanuel
Many thanks for this insight, I know that many web sites provide
informations , but toomuch information does not always help knowledge .
I was hoping to get documentation on FreeBSD, as well made as the
Handbook, but on the theorical side.

For ee, since my first message I found by myself (!) the location of the
source. I was thinking of recompiling it since I had problems when using
ee from the console, and with sysinstall too. I've seen a question in
this list about similar problems with pine. I suppose they both could be
related to vi - so I'm impatient to read an answer to this question too.

For the suffixes I found a Linux man entry that describes all the
suffixes at http://www.rt.com/man/suffixes.7.html.

I'll try your bookmarks right now !

Best regards

Gary W. Swearingen wrote:

There are several definitions of "open source". Assuming understanding
of the word "source", I like "software for which the source code is
available for reading at no cost beyond communication costs. It is
almost always proprietary, requiring payments of licensing fees or other
considerations for certain uses or being restricted from certain uses
altogether. It almost always may be republished as-is without payment.

Many people (often those who write it as "Open Source") like to add the
proviso that the source be licensed for execution (after translation),
derivation, and publishing of derivatives, for no payment other than
the cross-licensing of the deriver's copyrights under similar terms.

Not all Unix systems are open source. IBM and HP (and some others )
are still supporting their Unix systems, but I think they're hoping
to phase them out. Sun Microsystems is the main player, these days.

I install the complete sources (using "cvsup" as documented in the
FreeBSD Handbook), then find the directory with the source code (
eg, "locate -i ee.c" found it in /usr/src/usr.bin/ee/), enter that
directory, change the code, and run "make". IIRC, it may be then
be installed with "make install".

I'm afraid you'll just have to pick them up as you go or ask about a few
at a time. ".so" is "Shared Object (code libary)" (like DLL?); ".h" is
"include" header files for C/C++ code;

Any WWW searcher will find lots of info at all levels; here's one intro
http://www.ntlug.org/~cbbrowne/unix.html
Be sure to spend a few hours exploring www.freebsd.org if you're going
to try FreeBSD.

Re: Epson Stylus Color installation problem

2002-11-17 Thread hymette
First let me tell you that I they gave me the solution, so now my driver
prints: I had installed ghostscript as a pkg when the ghostscript driver
(stp stcolor) required by apsfilter was only available through
compilation from the port. I had no luck with cups, not even the web
interface wanted to open, nor the commands to answer . I suppose I'll
have to study how this application works some day (the ghostscript
Makefile warns: stp is outdated).

yes I'm using ulpt0 - sorry if I don't catch the difference between  I/O
services!
no, before installing the driver it was not possible to print anything!

Anyway many thanks for your concern.

Afaik it has been removed from the ports tree. They use pkg_create now.

where to get "pkg_tarup"

2002-11-17 Thread Bsd Neophyte

I'm having problems with my system because of this file. Where do I get
it? I've looked in the ports. I thought it was in /ports/misc but then i
read it was in /ports/sysutils. However, I can't find it in either
location.

My refuse file doesn't include anything that would exclude it from the
ports.

Can someone please help me out?

For "ls" to work on it, it must have been both mountable and mounted.

Adam answered this better than I could. Just for kicks, I'll note that
you might also want to make CDs that are bootable in NO drive. Just
"dd bs=2k" a file onto the CD and "dd bs=2k" it back off. Usually a
huge tar file or disk partition or such. It saves mkisofs time, but
you can't "ls" it, etc.

I'm afraid you'll just have to pick them up as you go or ask about a few
at a time. ".so" is "Shared Object (code libary)" (like DLL?); ".h" is
"include" header files for C/C++ code;

Going by what is listed in LINT for my VIA/Athlon chipset, I put this in
my kernel:

# Power Management Stuff
device  smbus
device  viapm
device  smb
device  iicbb
device  iicbus
device  iicsmb

Now my kernel correctly recognizes my power management chip:

viapropm0: SMBus I/O base at 0xe800
viapropm0:  port 0xe800-0xe80f at
device 4.4 on pci0
viapropm0: SMBus revision code 0x40
smb0:  on smbus0

However, with all the tweaking, the PC still will not power itself down.
It does in Red Hat and Slackware. I guess for a server opsys which
displays epoch-length uptimes, powering down isn't too high on the feature
support list ;-)

Arp and Route Commands

2002-11-17 Thread Karl Timmermann
Hello,

I'm new to the list and was hoping maybe someone could help me. These
commands work in Linux (and in this order), but not in FreeBSD/Mac OS X
as the arp and route commands are different:

arp -s 10.10.10.0 00:00:ca:13:4b:54 -i eth1
arp -s 10.10.10.0 00:00:ca:13:4b:54 -i eth1
route add -net 10.10.10.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev eth1
route add default gw 10.10.10.0 dev eth1

anyone know how i would change these commands to work with the FreeBSD
versions of arp and route?

Thanks!

Karl

If the CD is all data (i.e. just one track):
dd if=/dev/cdrom of=cd.iso bs=2048
If the CD is multiple tracks:
for i in `/compat/linux/usr/bin/seq 1 100`; do
dd if=/dev/acd0t$i of=track$i.cdr bs=2352;
done

Please see http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/creating-cds.html,

No, you can fixate it later.

mkisofs can have multiple superblock definitions provided. String
together as many as you want, and just understand that it'll decrease
the amount of data you can store on the drive.

Real time server mirroring?

2002-11-17 Thread Karl M. Joch
Hi,

i am working on a very big project thruout our whole country and have the
possibility to install freebsd on all servers in this project. i already
have solutions for all needed components including the needed ipsec and ssl
stuff.

there is only one point i havnt found a real solution. i need to real time
mirror some servers (4*2) for fault tolerance. the requirements is that
these ones never can break down because it is used as a medical net. best
would be mirror over locations. the servers are running:

postgres, mysql
sendmail and cyrus imap
samba

any idea how to have mirrored servers in real time with freebsd?

thanks a lot.

Does it sound like not having put "fixate" on the end has made this CD
never again readable? It's ok because I archived the data anyways. But
please comment.

Thanks for the tip. Is there a command line that makes the CD bootable in
any drive? For example, I've read the manpage and it looks as though you
can add -h for Macs and HFS, and -r for RockRidge extensions which get
around 8.3 format and... a couple other filename affecting flags...?

There was another post about having to recompile the kernel as well as add
apmd_enable="YES" to /etc/rc.conf by the way.

I am also on Athlon (FreeBSD 4.6.2), on a home-built box with a MicroStar
MS-6167 motherboard. Isn't there some important jumper on the board to
enable powering off via software rather than having to press the button??

nForce networking

2002-11-17 Thread Istvan Hoka
Hi!

My name is Hoka Istvan. I have recently installed FreeBSD and I am having
problems with the networking module on my nForce chipset.

Unlike previous posts about nForce networking I have read, suggesting that
the networking chipset on nForce boards might be compatible with Realtek

hdr=0x00
vendor   = 'Nvidia Corporation'

I have an MSI K7N420 Pro motherboard.

Any help is appreciated!

Well, it doesn't take much longer than that to do. Anything as
important as an OS install shouldn't be undertaken lightly,
especially as the decisions you make will be ones you'll live with
every day.

That said, it might take as long as an hour.

See the ppbus(4), ppi(4) and ppc(4) man pages. The ability to change
mode on the parallel bus is a feature of certain chipsets and may not
be available on your hardware --- for instance my Asus A7V266
motherboard only supports NIBBLE mode:

% grep ppc /var/run/dmesg.boot
ppc0:  at port 0x378-0x37f irq 7 on isa0
ppc0: Generic chipset (NIBBLE-only) in COMPATIBLE mode

console, ssh and so on ...

2002-11-17 Thread Glenn Becker
Hi -

I run -STABLE on both my desktop and laptop, and have encountered this
problem on both machines. Because it's more an annoyance than anything
else, I've never asked about it ... I've alse feared it was really
elementary. :(

Anyhoo, the problem is: when I am in console and ssh into my mail box,
the display (in Pine, which is what my ISP has ... I'd use Mutt
otherwise) is a bit funky. Not sure what words to use to describe it,
but messages "overlap" so that when it -appears- I am on one message, I
am really on the next, and so on. I can sort things out by first
down-arrowing over everything, but that's kind of a pain ... and it
still leaves a few 'ghost' lines at the top of the screen.

It would seem that the # of lines on the screen is off, or the terminal
type is wrong, or something along those lines. I've flailed around with
switching term types, but that doesn't seem to do anything.

Anyone else seen this? or more importantly, seen it and fixed it?

Thanks for any tips,

Glenn Becker

You need apmd_enable="YES" in rc.conf, and you need to recompile the
kernel. There is a line in the kernel config file that reads

device apm0 at nexus? disable flags 0x20

Delete the disable, rebuild kernel, and reboot. If apmd is running, which
the apmd_enable line should take care of, it should work.

FreeBSD Easy Server

2002-11-17 Thread Pierrick Brossin
Hi!

I 'm currently using SME (www.e-smith.org) as server at home.
After reading some docs on the net and having heavy troubles with Linux,
I decided
to turn this server to a FreeBSD server.

I've done a deep search on google and can't find any distribution like
SME but
FreeBSD based.
Actually, for those who do not know SME, it's a distribution based on
RedHat and
basically it can install a complete server in 10-15 minutes.

Do you guys know anything like that but FreeBSD based ?

I'm aware there is an instant-server port but I'm not really convinced!

Thanks

-Pierrick

Hi Vidor,

Did you use the 'shutdown -p' command? Coming from a Linux background,
you're probably used to just using 'shutdown -h'. On FreeBSD that does
exactly what it says and halts the system... you need the -p flag to turn
off the power. Make sure power management is turned on in your BIOS as
well.

Cheers,

Scott

Server Reboot

2002-11-17 Thread Lew A
Hello,

Last night at about 5 o'clock my pop server rebooted itself, looks like
the kernel freak out. It doesn't look like the kernel cored, so I can't
debug it. Here is the information if anyone has any helpful
hints it'd be great.

It's application dependent. Most modern web browsers (Netscape 6,
Mozilla, probably the latest IE) won't accept IPv4 addresses in URLs
as anything other than a dotted quad, and web servers also may not
respond in the way you expect. Eg.

happy-idiot-talk:~:% lynx -dump http://0x7f01/

   If you can see this, it means that the installation of the [1]Apache
   web server software on this system was successful. You may now add
   content to this directory and replace this page.

   [...etc...]

Hexadecimal works fine...

happy-idiot-talk:~:% lynx -dump http://2130706433/

  Bad Request

   Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.
 _

Apache/2.0.43 Server at 2130706433 Port 80

... whereas decimal doesn't. Note: this is being rejected by the
apache2 server: lynx itself is quite happy to use a decimal as a web
server address. Many other programs that can take an IPv4 address as
an argument will also accept it in an alternate format --- ping(8) is
a good example.

Nowadays, using a decimal integer as a server address in a URL is
unlikely to work It used to be a fairly common trick used by spammers
and other undesirables to attempt to hide their identity or try get
around some filtering software.

You don't really provide enough detail for an specific response. What
exactly are you trying to install, and what is the error message when
it fails?

When you say "installed from source", do you mean that you used the
ports system to compile apache, or that you compiled it entirely
outside the ports/pkg system?

If it was the latter then I wouldn't characterise the effect you're
seeing as a bug --- annoying, certainly, but this situation is outside
the scope of what the ports system provides.

In general, I'd advise you to wean yourself off using
/stand/sysinstall for general maintenance purposes --- it's great at
installing the system from scratch, but it was never really intended
as a general purpose administration tool.

Instead, try using the standard tools provided by the system ---
pkg_add(1) in your case -- or what are pretty much the de facto new
generation of standard tools, by which I mean portupgrade(1) and
friends. Amongst other advantages these will produce more meaningful
output if things go horribly wrong, and if that doesn't tell you
straight away how to fix the problem then posting that output here
will give us a fighting chance at helping you.

Cheers,

Matthew

single user mode VS normal using Dump & restore

2002-11-17 Thread Grant
I have tested using dump in single user mode and normal mode for an online
Web server. Both have worked great. But I am worried if I try to dump on a
busy server that I will be more likely to have bad data or corrupted files.

Therefore, I have decided to do this using the Fixit cd (cd II) and take the
server off line for 20 min for a safe backup. And use the cron dumps for
weekly backups.

Hi John,

Are you absolutely sure you have the ums device loaded on the VIA machine
(either statically compiled into your kernel or loading the module in
/boot/loader.conf)? It might also be worth running usbd in verbose mode
(/usr/sbin/usbd -d -v) and unplugging/replugging the mouse to see what, if
anything, is being recognised.

Having to preload ums threw me for a while -- I had naively assumed that
usbd would load it for me when it saw something that claimed to be a mouse,
but apparently it doesn't work that way :-(

Apologies if you've already tried these steps... it's all I can think of
that might help you.

For the first I think it's recommented reading the FreeBSD handbook:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/
This is - even if you know it all - it's important to know the
nomenclature which is used here. At next it may useful to read "The
Design and Implementation of the 4.4BSD Operating System":
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/design-44bsd/

If this doesn't help at all, please ask again.

Cheers,
Jens

Simple enough:

This perl snippet will convert a dotted quad address into an integer:

# in the spirit of inet_aton(3) convert an address given as a dotted
# quad into an integer
sub inet_atoi ($) {
my $ipaddr = shift;
my @bytes;

@bytes = (
$ipaddr =~ /^(25[0-5]|2[0-4][0-9]|[01][0-9][0-9]|[0-9][0-9]|[0-9])\.
  (25[0-5]|2[0-4][0-9]|[01][0-9][0-9]|[0-9][0-9]|[0-9])\.
  (25[0-5]|2[0-4][0-9]|[01][0-9][0-9]|[0-9][0-9]|[0-9])\.
  (25[0-5]|2[0-4][0-9]|[01][0-9][0-9]|[0-9][0-9]|[0-9])$/x
);
$ipaddr = 0;
for (@bytes) {
$ipaddr <<= 8;
$ipaddr += $_;
}
return $ipaddr;
}

There's a standard version of inet_aton() provided by the Socket
module (perldoc Socket), but that returns a packed string rather than
an integer value.

These three will print it out an integer in whatever appropriate
format:

# in the spirit of inet_ntoa(3) convert a network address expressed as
# an integer into the typical dotted-quad representation.
sub inet_itoa ($) {
my $ipaddr = shift;
my @bytes;

for ( 1 .. 4 ) {
unshift @bytes, $ipaddr & 0xff;
$ipaddr >>= 8;
}
return sprintf "%u.%u.%u.%u", @bytes;
}

# Display address as hex string
sub inet_itox ($) { return sprintf "%#x", $_[0]; }

# Display address as decimal integer
sub inet_itod ($) { return sprintf "%u", $_[0]; }

If you're not into perl programming, I wrote a little CGI or PHP
network calculator which you can slap into a website:

http://www.infracaninophile.co.uk/nwc/networkcalc-1.0.tar.bz2

Cheers,

Matthew
