There is no simple answer to this. The MIB values affect behaviors within the kernel. The important parts of ipfw(8) and ipf(8) are code inside of the kernel. The some of the behavior of ipfw(8) and ipf(8) themselves are controlled by sysctl(8) knobs, net.inet.ip.fw.enable net.inet.ip.fw.one_pass net.inet.ip.fw.debug net.inet.ip.fw.verbose ... net.inet.ipf.fr_flags net.inet.ipf.fr_pass net.inet.ipf.fr_active net.inet.ipf.fr_tcpidletimeout ... Whether a specific entry in the sysctl(8) MIB has an effect felt before a packet gets to ipfw(8) or ipf(8) processing depends on that specific entry. And just because the feature enabled by the sysctl(8) knob occurs after firewall processing does not mean it is useless. Packets that are allowed through the firewall still will be affected by their settings. For example, you set net.inet.tcp.drop_synfin and have a rule like, 02000 pass tcp from any to ${smtpsrv} 25 For your mail server. You do not need to add an explicit drop rule for SYN+FIN packets in your firewall rules (or more likely, you are protected if you forget such a rule). -- Crist J. Re: how to build Spamassassin
The ports collection is great for certain things. I do happen to use it for spam assassin on 4.9 Stable. I have perl 5.8.2 installed from ports and I used use.perl to set it up as default. Here is the problem with ports, many maintainers are using 5.x now. Since there is only one ports collection, things are OFTEN broken or don't work quite right. Sometimes features just aren't there.. look at the Sendmail -SASL port.. you can't use milter's without installing GCC 3 or upgrading to 5. Sometimes the ports are just plain out of date. There is nothing wrong with avoiding the ports collection when you need control or recent software. All of my web server related stuff is installed manually because I have a complex setup and i really don't feel like the extra hurdles the ports collection requires for apache 2 + mod jk + php 4.3 + perl + tomcat 4.1.x ... etc On the flip side, i love it for x11. If you change your mind on spam assassin, here is a procedure that should work. Install Perl 5.8.2 from ports (or source) Install Spam assassin from ports (or source) Install razor (it helps a lot) I personally use anomy mail (a script) with procmail to run spam assassin and clam av on incoming mail. I switched over to smapd and spamc for a slight performance improvement. It works fine on my mail server (low traffic). The real thing to remember about ports is to try to use it all or nothing for a given type of services. Trying to mix and match doesn't work well. Its a lot of work actually. On Dec 9, 2003, at 8:11 PM, Tony Jones wrote: Hi Nick. Thanks for the reply. Trying to install it via CPAM crapped out bigtime and seems to have left my stock FreeBSD perl setup in a goofy state. Perl would spit out nasty method tracebacks. Can someone tell me if it is possible to redo just the perl portion of a "make installworld" so I can reset my stock module config ? Giving up on this approach, with the help of Jan Grant's earlier reply I got the ports tree to work. [I needed to unpack the whole ports.tgz, not just the spamassassin subdir] First problem was that the MD5 on the downloaded distfile (that the ports Makefile downloaded from spamassassin.org) didn't match: < MD5 (Mail-SpamAssassin-2.60.tar.gz) = 65ece9dec35cc4701d98680d0651afd3 --- MD5 (Mail-SpamAssassin-2.60.tar.gz) = 46d1db67ed1d860ddb136e0beb5f6ac3 I temporarily updated the MD5 so I could get past this, e-mailed the maintainer. I wasn't planning on installing until I heard back, but since the stock make did a bunch of perl module updating foo, if the tar.gz is trojaned I could already be screwed :-( Next the make groks when it tries to configure spamd, claims gcc isn't in the PATH, though it's in roots path once make drops back to the shell. This is probably easily fixable, but at this point I gave up and started working on what I get paid to do :-) All of this is on FreeBSD 4.9. I'm reminded of Greg Lemis's chastisement of me for previously not using the FreeBSD Ports system. It isn't making my life much easier here :-))) Tony Hm, well, if you hate perl perhaps you should consider using a spam filtering package written in some other language! The problem with FreeBSD and perl is well documented . . . basically the FreebSD system has perl 5.005_03 which is a very old version nowadays, and many modules require 5.6.1 at least if not 5.8+. The simplest and easiest way to clear up these problems is to install a new perl from source, in a non-standard location, so it creates its own libraries from scratch. I recommend creating a user perl and installing everything under /home/perl. Then at the end just change the symlinks to /usr/bin/perl etc. Do _not_ try to install a new perl over the 5.005 version that FreeBSD has installed by default. FreeBSD creates non-standard library locations and you will have lots of problems. If you follow this advice you won't have any problem using CPAN to install libwww, Mail::SpamAssassin and all the other modules you need or currently use.perl and CPAN are _very_ reliable. If you upgrade your FreeBSD to 5.1 you will find that the stock perl is 5.6.1 and most stuff Just Works with it. The perl has also been separated from the base distribution and is now installed as a package (or port) so it doesn't break when you update it. On FreeBSD prior to 5.x I always built a new perl from source as I described, and then built all my applications from source too (including apache, mod_perl, mysql and a bunch of perl applications like SpanAssassin). I too have encountered the 'ports or bust' mentality and while

I'm reminded of Greg Lemis's chastisement of me for previously not using the FreeBSD Ports system. It isn't making my life much easier here :-))) Right: it's just not true (in FreeBSD < 5.1) that using ports makes your life easier with perl. The p5-* ports are great but the base perl installation is messed up; that's the problem. The FreeBSD developers acknowledge as much, in http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.1R/early-adopter.html (section 6.3 - Common Notes): "Perl has been removed from the base system, and should be installed either from a pre-built package or from the Ports Collection. Building Perl as a part of the base system created a number of difficulties which made updates problematic." Note that it _is_ true that the ports make your life easier with perl in FreeBSD > 5.1.x, since, as the same document continues: "sysinstall(8) will now install the Perl package as a part of most distribution sets, so most users will not notice this change." So in other words, the entire perl package is a port. Or a package :) This is a generally a good thing, though it is sad to see that the port is of 5.6.1. This version of perl was superceded by 5.8 more than two years ago and stable perl version is now 5.8.2 ... [2] Anyways, you still have two good choices, IMHO: build a new sandbox perl by hand (~ 2hrs) or build a new 5.1 system (~ 2 weeks? :) Best, -- nick [1] CPAN's ability to install multiple related modules by groups via Bundle::* can save you a lot of time versus FreeBSD's ports of the p5-* modules. But that's another argument :) [2] I don't know what you do with your server, but I do a lot of internet-related stuff and it's an arena of dynamic development. I've never found the ports able to keep up with the software I need. I build perl, apache and their various components (mod_perl, mod_ssl etc) by hand, and rely on the ports for other stuff. OTOH, as someone pointed out, the ports-installed perl _does_ play nice with CPAN, so you can use CPAN to get perl modules as well as use the p5-* ports. -- ___ Nick Tonkin {|8^)> ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Hi Vahric, > First thanks for your answer . Please correct me if I mis understand > something . > > 1) You mean if I want to keep source up-to-date method and use make world > process I must test it another test machine before apply it to the > production server . I think that Scott put this quite nicely. Of course, you will not have a test machine for your desktop machine at home, but depending on the importance of a particular machine you, as a responsible admin, will not use untested patches/updates, ... To continue the home network example, you will try a patch on your FreeBSD desktop first, before applying it to your FreeBSD gateway, proxy or whatever that several other people depend on. > 2) You said that FreeBSD was more than a kernel . What do you mean > Could you explain little more or Do you know any documentation or whitepaper > which explain mind of the FreeBSD operating System . This might also interest you: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/explaining-bsd/ > 3)I red small paragraf from http://www.daemonology.net/freebsd-update/ > after your advise -FreeBSD Update is a system for automatically building, > distributing, fetching, and applying binary security updates for FreeBSD. > This makes it possible to easily track the FreeBSD security branches without > the need for fetching the source tree and recompiling - > *** it seems really good _! Soory but if binary update make all things > easyer than soruce update mechanism Why Everybody advising source-update > instead of freebsd-update IMO, the reason is two-fold: 1. Using the source based method, you can tailor the system to your needs: You can build only those parts of the system you need (increasing security), use custom options, optimize for your CPU, ... If you are familiar with programming, you could also fix small issues on your own - although most people won't most likely do that. 2. Historically, FreeBSD is very source-centric. Not only the binary update-mechanism is rather young, but also FreeBSD started its life as a (source) patch set against 4.4BSD-Lite. If you browser the CVS repository, you will see, how carefully people document the changes to the source tree. In contrast to Linux, for example, you are able to reconstruct the history of every single FreeBSD feature. And this does not apply to FreeBSD's kernel only, but also to all the great pieces of software in the base system. If the responsible people of the FreeBSD team decide to add a new tool to the base system, they import it into the CVS repository and apply FreeBSD specify patches to it (which are, of course, fed back upstream). For example, FreeBSD 4.9-RELEASE does not have the latest and greatest version of OpenSSH, but it came with a known-good version plus patches for the security holes. If you have a look at all this, you will easily understand why there aren't multiple FreeBSD distributions (like in the Linux world): The FreeBSD Project provides more than a kernel - it also maintains the base system and almost 1 ported third-party applications (the so-called ports collection). Hope that answered your questions at least a bit. I'd suggest that you browse the web site and have a look at the documentation (also a very important part of the project) in order to get a better feeling for FreeBSD. Re: how to build Spamassassin
Hi Nick. Thanks for the reply. I already knew of the FreeBSD stock perl issues and was aware that under no circumstances should I try to upgrade the stock Perl, but I appreciate the reminded nontheless!! I gave up on trying to install the SpamAssassin I obtained manually from spamassassin.org after it bitched that my Bundle::Net (or similar, sorry, forget the exact package) was out of date. [I needed to unpack the whole ports.tgz, not just the spamassassin subdir] First problem was that the MD5 on the downloaded distfile (that the ports Makefile downloaded from spamassassin.org) didn't match: < MD5 (Mail-SpamAssassin-2.60.tar.gz) = 65ece9dec35cc4701d98680d0651afd3 --- > MD5 (Mail-SpamAssassin-2.60.tar.gz) = 46d1db67ed1d860ddb136e0beb5f6ac3 I temporarily updated the MD5 so I could get past this, e-mailed the maintainer. It isn't making my life much easier here :-))) Tony > Hm, well, if you hate perl perhaps you should consider using a spam > filtering package written in some other language! > > The problem with FreeBSD and perl is well documented . . . basically the > FreebSD system has perl 5.005_03 which is a very old version nowadays, and > many modules require 5.6.1 at least if not 5.8+. > > The simplest and easiest way to clear up these problems is to install a > new perl from source, in a non-standard location, so it creates its own > libraries from scratch. So, two questions: 1) How can I reinstall perl 5.005_03 (make install from /usr/src) 2) Once I have the perl restored, what is the best way to install SpamAssassin on 4.9 ? Thanks Tony (who hates perl) Hm, well, if you hate perl perhaps you should consider using a spam filtering package written in some other language! Re: archiving and restoring disk images...
Thanks, Dan. I'm thinking this whole process over based on what you've said. I've never tried storing a disk as an archive, so I thought I'd try it on for size. Thanks for your point of view. Talk Filters and Gaim...
hello all, just wondering if any of you has had luck getting the talkfilters port integrated with gaim? i tried applying the patches included with the talkfilters port, but no dice. i suspect that this failure has much to do with the difference between the version of gaim for which the patches were written and the version of gaim i am running (0.74). excerpt of talkfilters gaim-patch README: This patch is provided for interested hackers only, not for end users. Familiarity with UNIX and C development is assumed. Please DO NOT email me if you need help appying this patch. Lots of disks.
Hi, I'm currently using vinum to concatenate two large (120GB) disks, providing a single large(r) valume (240GB in theory ;). At the moment the volume is about 90% full and I'm looking to add three more 120GB disks and set up RAID5. This is somewhat offtopic (not entirely sure if it is FreeBSD or not) but if I were to put two 120GB disks per channel and buy an ATA controller for my PCI bus and put another disk (or some combination of this sort) would Vinum be able to handle it? Is it even possible to have >4 IDE disks? I know the performance would be terrible but I have considered this and realised it is irrelevant since the box only has a 10Mbit connection (it's for storing large data files (videos, etc.)). Now for the slightly off-topic question -- does anybody know of a good hardware RAID IDE controller than can support 5 devices in RAID5? I'm not sure whether such a thing exists (unless it has a primary, secondary and tertiary??? controller) and I fear it might be beyond my price range but I'd be interested to hear anyway. I know I should really be using SCSI or FC for this kind of stuff but I can't afford to go this way and the performance isn't my bottleneck. Well, it is probably all about the same really. The MNI_ISO is just the install system and it then pulls what it needs to install over the net from a site you specify. The disk 1 is the full system and doesn't have to pull stuff over the net for installation. But it is bigger because it has everything and so you pull the stuff downloading that ISO rather than during the installation. I have had better luck sustaining the downloads when the install system is doing it rather than when I was trying to download the larger ISO, but that may just be my location. jerry ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Seems that almost any recent APC Back-UPS Pro or Smart-UPS is supposed to work with apcupsd. However, mine does not work with apcupsd anymore. I think this was my fault, as I tried to send data from my FreeBSD machine to the UPS, and later realised that my model does not allow this. So I think I may have fried the UPS data-line. FreeBSD 4.9 + XFree86 4.3 + Alpha
Hi, I just recently installed freebsd 4.9 on a DEC PWS 500au. Everything works fine except X. I realize that the problem more than likely isn't FreeBSD specific, its probably a problem with XFree but I thought you guys may be able to give me some advice. When I try to run "xf86cfg" to configure my xserver, it just hangs and takes 99% of the CPU. Ive also tried manually creating config files just to see if I got the same behavior, and I did. I have tried with a few different vid cards, the Cirrus Logic that was originally in this machine, an ATI Mach64, and an S3 Trio. It always hangs at the same spot in the log and takes 99% of the CPU. Here's an excerpt from the log file. Thanks in advance for any help, i'm thinking I may need to just wait for X 4.4, but i'm hoping someone out there has had better luck than I have. Please correct me if I mis understand something . 1) You mean if I want to keep source up-to-date method and use make world process I must test it another test machine before apply it to the production server . I realize I'm jumping in mid-thread here, but: Anyone that gets paid to maintain a system or group of systems is certifiably insane if they routinely 'just apply patches and fixes' to their production box without testing on a staging server or cloned test system. I realize that the definition of 'production' varies, ranging anywhere from someone running a web server at home (ok, not production, but some treat it as such) to companies primary database, web, mail, development and build systems. While I've been 'guilty' myself of applying smaller patches to Solaris, HP-UX, etc boxes for development without prior testing: a. It's minimal impact- I could recreate the systems in question of need be from scratch. It would be an inconvenience, and still not the best idea, but for some systems you don't always have cloned systems... b. Anything that could cost a company money or loss of uptime that customers depended on NEVER gets upgraded/patched/etc without testing on a staging system. This includes kernel builds or patches, library changes, application patches etc. Virtually anything. Only exception will vary from person to person and company to company, but only sane changes are changes you KNOW (a in 99.99%) are limited in scope, as in self-contained applications that don't touch any of the core libraries required for the system to do it's job. Even so, this one's debateable, as a 'self contained' app can certainly turn out to eat CPU or RAM, thus degrading system performance... 2) You said that FreeBSD was more than a kernel . What do you mean Could you explain little more or Do you know any documantation or whitepaper which explain mind of the FreeBSD operating System . I'm sure this is covered in the Handbook or other docs at www.freebsd.org...Briefly...BSD is comprised of: 1. Kernel. Umm, I hope I don't have to expain this one ;-) 2. Core system- This one can likely be argued a bit with bsd (and others), but this should be considered any additional libraries and/or services that are required for mimimum accepted or targetted functionality. In the strictest sense, this can be seen as core libraries that userland apps will generally require- libc and others, and core services- login/getty, inetd, etc. Like a Windows kernel without any of the GUI or Win32 libraries would be of little use, Unix systems have their own generally accepted list of 'core requirements.' SSH and a few others may be debateable as far as if they're really core requirement or not, but it's generally agreed on that most networked *nix systems will be running ssh (hopefully as a replacement to telnet and ftp..) FreeBSDs equivalent here is the output of 'make world.' 3. userland apps- Kernel and core make a rudimentary system, but without much 'specialized' functionality. You're networked, and perhaps running mail and ssh, but that's about it. userland = everything else. Databases, Window Manager(s), MatLab, or whatever else you need to turn the system from a 'generic' system into what it's going to be used for. As already mentioned, without some of the contents of the 'core system,' you wouldn't be very likely able to even install userland apps as libc and friends would be missing 3)I red small paragraf from http://www.daemonology.net/freebsd-update/ after your advise -FreeBSD Update is a system for automatically building, distributing, fetching, and applying binary security updates for FreeBSD. Check out the output of the 'configure' script on a samba or Perl tarball sometime- some apps have quite a few possible configurations, and binary distributions don't fit everyone's needs. It's possible, depending on what you use your system(s) for that you can solely rely on binary packages, but as you expand the purpose of a given system further, it's likely you'll eventually need to configure and compile from source yourself. Re: inode state
Hi Robert, thanks for the reply, and yea, totally forgot the version. its 4.9. Now, the problem is: 1) I can not use linuxthreads since my server is also multiplexing via kqueue's and I can not find any version of linuxthreads which implements a thread-safe version of kqueue. 2) I can not use freebsd 5.2 because it fails to boot on a dell poweredge 1750 with two harddisks. The LSILogic SCSI Controller the server uses (mpt driver) seems to not find any hdds and gives up with an error. If I remove one of the two disks 5.2 boots but the kernel traps as soon as it tries to write to the hdd. Is there some way to keep the number of kernl-level locks as low as possible? This all seems to be associated to flushing dirty buffers and I wonder if there is no way to make it flush in way smaller bursts or why exactly it has to lock the process while doing so. How to configure usb printer with ulpt0 rather than ugen0?
Note: recently asked, I tried someone's suggestion, still can't do it. How do i associate my usb printer with ulpt0, rather than the ugen0 that it boots up with? Original question and data repeated below, the only difference is: - My officejet k80xi usb printer is the only usb equipment connected to my computer. I have moved it to the first physical port, so now the printer shows up on ugen0. Still nothing on ulpt[01]. - I have removed the hub mentioned below. Nothing on the second physical port, only the usb printer on ugen0 - all data/indications below the same, except the printer is now on ugen0 rather than ugen1. I can't figure out how to bind my usb printer to ulpt0, rather than ugen1 as it is now. My physical setup: first usb port: logitech wingman hub second usb port: HP OfficeJet K80xi The hub has an HP 7400c scanjet, and the cable for a camera, with nothing currently connected to the cable. In a previous freebsd install with this same setup, I've downloaded pictures through that cable, haven't tried that yet with this install. Never tried scanning. But back to printing ... Here's my failure indication (besides not printing). I'm using apsfilter to set up my printer. When I try printing a test page I get this: Printing test page... -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 3808147 Dec 7 13:56 /tmp/apsfilter320/test_page.aps /usr/local/share/apsfilter/SETUP: line 1: /dev/ulpt0: Device not configured So I guess I have to figure out what "Device not configured" means, and how to fix it. So, no, you can't boot from the hard drive and read files off the CD from the loader. However, you can copy the kernel and mfsroot off of the CD and stick them in /boot/new/kernel and /boot/new/mfsroot.gz and then manually load the new kernel and mfsroot from the hard disk's loader to get into the installer. Chances are it stopped before it installed anything - especially in light of your find command. In which case, your system isn't in a bad state after all. But if you want to be *really* certain, have a look at /usr/ports/net/cvsupit/pkg-plist. It should contain a list of all the files the port wanted to install. You can search for each of them in your system, and delete them if you find them. Note that the files listed in pkg-plist are missing the installation prefix, usually "/usr/local/", so you have to tack that on yourself mentally before looking for them. Also, there might be filenames with variables like %%THIS%% in it, in which case you'll have to look in the Makefile to see what those variables would have been replaced with. > regards > > richard. You don't mention which version of FreeBSD you're running -- if 4.x, you probably want to relink your application against the "linuxthreads" port. This is because libc_r implements threads inside a single process without the support of the kernel, which means that if the process is blocked in kernel, all threads will be blocked in kernel. The linuxthreads package uses a model similar to Linux's threading implementation (hence the name) to allow the threads to be scheduled using lightweight versions of processes (shared file descriptors, etc). This isn't quite POSIX-compliant, but it works quite well for disk-bound applications such as databases. If you're running on 5.x, especially recent 5.1 or 5.2 prereleases, you probably want to give libkse a try. It's the new m:n threading implementation that will become the default in 5.3, and also permits parallelism (only in a more POSIX-compliant way, and in theory offering much greater scalability for large numbers of threads). I stick the following lines in my /etc/libmap.conf on 5.x boxes to force all applications linked against libc_r to use libkse instead: libc_r.so.5 libkse.so.1 libc_r.so libkse.so One particularly nice thing about the m:n thread support is that you can run-time plug the thread library between several options (libc_r, libthr, libkse) to pick the one that performs best for your application. Another benefit of running with a non-libc_r threads package is that if you have an SMP box, you'll see real parallelism. how to make dhclient give up its lease and get a new one with routes, etc. ?
I am on a cable modem and am running an http server, natd, the Usual Suspects, and have been doing this for a couple of years. I use dhcp to get the address for my externally-facing NIC and through reboots, power outages, even changes in network ownership (@ home -> ATT -> comcast) all has been solid. Until today. I decided over the past couple of weeks to actually get a domain instead of using no-ip.org (paulbeard.org: how imaginative) and I started using Zoneedit to manage it since I wanted DNS to be somewhere other than on my network. As luck would have, I got assigned a new IP address last night (for the first time since I used @home more than 3 years ago) and for some reason the dhcp client wouldn't get the new address. I ran dhclient and that just set my address to all 0's. I then killed it and restarted and got an address but no routes. I ended up rebooting and that solved it (I then had to fix both no-ip's config file since the old one was unparseable by version 2 clients and go to zoneedit and update my address). So how to make dhclient do all this without the Windows workaround of rebooting? Advice on automagically notifying zoneedit is welcome, as well but not as pressing: I think they work with dyndns and of course I chose no-ip.org. -- Paul Beard paulbeard [at] mac.com ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

A Kerberized version of the FTP which uses encryption is probably also available as part of the system, but it is not likely that Kerberos is applicable to your situation. Set boot loader to boot off CD manually
Hi all, I was banging my head against the wall too long yesterday, so I have broken down, and have to ask. Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated. Here is what I'm trying to do. I have two computers, both running 4.8, clean, minimal installs. They have two serial cables connected to each other to act as serial consoles, and -Dh has been added to /boot.config, along with ttys having been updated. The console bit works great. What I want to be able to do, is completely rebuild one of the machines remotely. So I log into one, serial over to the other, and reboot it. Then, when the loader comes up, I stop it, and break to the "ok" prompt. I unload the kernel that was starting to load, and at this point, want to boot off CD, to rebuild the system, as though I had gone into the BIOS, and set the CD as the first boot device. However, I don't have remote access to the BIOS, so I can't do this. Here is some information about the systems, and what I have tried so far: They are identical computers, that I built myself, very default machines. IDE everything. atapci0: port 0xff00-0xff0f at device 2.5 on pci0 ata0: at 0x1f0 irq 14 on atapci0 ata1: at 0x170 irq 15 on atapci0 ata1-slave: ATAPI identify retries exceeded ad0: 38166MB [77545/16/63] at ata0-master UDMA100 acd0: CDROM at ata1-master PIO4 I have tried all combinations of load that I can think of. And I have tried setting loaddev and root_disk_unit to all sorts of things. Here is the output from a lsdev: cd @ 0xff5c disk @ 0xef68 disk0: BIOS drive A: disk1: BIOS drive C: disk1s1a: FFS disk1s1b: swap disk1s1e: FFS disk1s1f: FFS disk1s1g: FFS pxe @ 0xd6d8 I have also tried just doing an ls on the device, by setting currdev to all sorts of things...like cd9660:cd, just 'cd' and the BIOS physical addresses in the form X:acd(Y,Z) [0-4]:acd([0-4],[a-c]) No joy. I have also tried booting with the -C option, and here is the tail end of that attempt: acd0: CDROM at ata1-master PIO4 Mounting root from cd9660:cd0a no such device 'cd' setrootbyname failed iso_mountroot: can't find rootvp Root mount failed: 6 Mounting root from cd9660:acd0a cd9660: RockRidge Extension init: not found in path /sbin/init:/sbin/oinit:/sbin/init.bak:/stand/sysinstall panic: no init No joy. I'm trying to think what other information might be useful. As I see it, the problem is, that once a version of FreeBSD has been installed, and the loader loads off the HD, it doesn't want to have anything to do with the CD any more... I realize I have other options, like PXE or FTP, or having an "install partition", to hold an install of BSD, just to install to the other partition. I really don't want to go down these roads right now, since I want to be able to have someone pop in a new CD, to switch around versions of BSD running on these boxes. Help anyone!? First, I suggest working from a copy of the file for safety sake. For a text file, Use vi. Count down to which line is the last one you want to get rid of (lets say you want to get rid of 1-1152 and keep from 1153-end). Then, in vi, put your cursor on the first line and do '1152dd'. save the file off with ':wq' and voila, you got it. For a binary file, use dd and tell it to skip the bytes in front and start copying from there to end to the new file. You may also have to play around with blocksize and notrunc to get just what you want if you need to break it on some odd boundary. jerry > > Thanks, > > Here is the question: How to truncate a file from the > begining to a certain point in the file? > > > __ > Do you Yahoo!? > New Yahoo! ident patch for NATD
Hello all. I've found this : http://ofca.pl/bsdident/ thsi is a patch for oidentd 2.0.7 and natd + libalias under freebsd 4.8 It used to work for me, but my HDD have died. so i downlaoded 4.9.iso, burned, upgraded kernel source, and now can't patch ne libalias/natd Could someone implement this code to natd in the future ? Or maybe I could post my ipfw/natd rules so someone can help 'translating' them to ipf/ipnat? I don't think acroread-3 has been in the ports system in quite some time. I'd recommend rebooting with "shutdown -r" rather than "reboot" unless you have a good reason to do otherwise. This shouldn't happen anyway, but the extra shutdown steps will certainly be a bit safer. It's likely (based on a *very* quick look at the code) that you're hitting a bug which has been fixed since 4.5, so perhaps you should consider an update. -- Lowell Gilbert, embedded/networking software engineer, Boston area: resume/CV at http://be-well.ilk.org:8088/~lowell/resume/ username/password "public" ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Just configure your ipfw rules to count traffic for each user on your system. I'll include my custom ipfw startup script which I load before everything else with the name: /usr/local/etc/rc.d/.000.ipfw.sh note the CHANGE ME lines though - also note that I DON'T use ipfw for blocking traffic, instead opting to use ipfilter for that. How to Setup Reverse DNS on LAN?
When connecting via ssh to my FBSD boxes, it takes over a minute before the connection is established. Searching the archives suggests that this is due to a failed reverse DNS lookup that must time out before connecting. Suggestions include adding the hosts to the local host file which I've done. However this does not seem to provide reverse DNS resolution which appears required. For example, I have a Win XP machine at 192.168.1.3 named 'bigdaddy' and a FBSD box at 192.168.1.2 named 'blacksheep'. blacksheep contains a line in /etc/hosts: 192.168.1.3 bigdaddy bigdaddy.mykitchentable.net Using the 'host' command, I see that 'bigdaddy' gets resolved: blacksheep> host bigdaddy bigdaddy.mykitchentable.net has address 192.168.1.3 But 192.168.1.3 does not: blacksheep> host 192.168.1.3 Host not found, try again. Short of setting up named, is there a way to solve my problem? I am mounting nwfs on freebsd versions 4.5 to 4.8. The details of how to do this a not easy to find -- even when I've done it before. I think I originally only found the way through a query to this mailing list. At least for FBSD 4.x it is necessary to generate additional pseudo interfaces derived from the fxp0 (or whatever your base interface is) interface each dedicated to a particular IPX variant. This is done with the pseudo-device ef in the kernel configuration or you should be able to use the loadable module if_ef.ko. Take a look at the man page ef(4). Now configure with # ifconfig fxp0f2 ipx 0x00010010 or whatever the appropriate variant is in your case or if you are not sure you should be able to fire up all 4 variants I have actually included this in the kernel configuration with: options IPX #IPX/SPX communications protocols options NCP #NetWare Core protocol pseudo-device ef # Multiple ethernet frames support options ETHER_II# enable Ethernet_II frame options ETHER_8023 # enable Ethernet_802.3 (Novell) frame options ETHER_8022 # enable Ethernet_802.2 frame options ETHER_SNAP and then in rc.conf you could use : ifconfig_fxp0f2_ipx="ipx 0x00010010" Malcolm Kay ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
