Re: MS Exchange server on FreeBSD?
I have not personally used it, but I have hopes to try it out someday where I work, or for possible home use... http://mirror.open-xchange.org/ox/EN/community/ Called Open-Xchange.looks cool.. Also, you could realistically implement something 'exchange like' that is all web based, and IMAP backendedand then just integrate postfix (or your MTA of choice) within the LDAP backend. If that doesn't work for you, I Am sure there are many other different types of software that you could use to setup the same sort of exchange style centralized contacts, On Fri, March 18, 2005 5:41 pm, Anthony Atkielski said: > Christian Tischler writes: > >> I would like to run an MS exchange server. If you have not - consider > doing so and see if this "may" correct your issues. > Racer, Anthony has an on-motherboard Adaptec chip in an 8 year old Vectra. It does not use firmware. It might be possible that he has a flashable motherboard BIOS but that BIOS isn't going to have microcode for the Adaptec controller in it. (And in any case if he's never flashed his BIOS I would -strongly- recommend he don't do it now, since his eeprom has probably had the existing BIOS code burned into it by so long without an update) He is stuck with the ROM that is burned into the Adaptec controller by the manufacturer. And I wouldn't put it past HP to have tampered with the Adaptec microcode anyway. Compaq definitely did with Adaptec controllers they put into their machines that were made during the same era. I also checked his disk drives and neither of them have upgradable firmware in the drives. He does not have an array controller. As I've told him in the past, he has 2 disks on his SCSI chain, one of them is a Seagate that syncs up at 10Mbt to the controller, the other is a newer Quantum that syncs up at 20Mbt. I have told him to go into his Vectra BIOS and limit the sync negotiation on both disk drives to the same speed - 10Mbt. He refuses to try doing this. I've also told him to remove the Quantum and try running a FreeBSD system off the Seagate, to see if it errors with just the single Seagate drive on it. He refuses to do that either. Others have told him to check termination. It is possible one or both drives are pinned for termination, and since his chassis provides termination that would be an error. It is also possible that one or both drives isn't pinned to supply terminator power to the bus which would be a problem as well. He has dismissed all of these without checking, claiming his termination is fine. The basic problem is that Anthony has an error that is non-damaging to his data - every once in a while the machine spews a bunch of SCSI errors, resets the bus and everything on it, things slow down for a moment, then life continues. He has by his admission, not lost data - yet. So the summary of it is that IMHO he LIKES things the way they are - it's been happening enough so that he's not afraid of losing data anymore, yet it gives him an error he can wave around every time he wants to knock FreeBSD's drivers. He isn't really interested in finding the root of the problem or isolating it to either a controller, a disk, or a software driver issue. Instead he thinks that the SCSI driver author can just wave a wand, and look at a non-debug output of the error messages, and magically know exactly what workaround to stick in the driver to make the error messages go away. It is rather amusing or pathetic now, depending on your POV. For all we know the SCSI device driver under Windows NT ran into the exact same error - and simply did the bus reset silently, without informing the user. That would be completely in character with how Microsoft approaches things (ie: if it doesen't kill the system the user doesen't need to know about it) As I have told him before the only way to find the error is to install a SCSI analyzer onto the SCSI bus, and only Adaptec and the disk drive manufacturers have such a tool - and if one did, they would almost certainly find out it is some kind of low-level timing od SCSI command set implementation issue that would need a correction in either the Adaptec controller microcode, or one of the disk drive's microcode - and you could identify which disk it was a lot simpler and quicker by just doing the troubleshooting suggestions that have already been given to him. Besides which, a half hour of time on such a tool would probably cost more than the price of a brand new server. Re: oo.org unkillable process
I have this same problem (see open office freezes thread). I was wondering what was going on such that it is possible to create processes which cannot be killed. This seems to me like it should not be permitted by the operating system. If root decides a process needs to go then it should go, especially a user land process. Would it not be possible to find out what is going wrong with OO.org and use whatever it is that is going wrong in a process fork bomb? I'm not going to claim that I know anything about operating systems, but it seems to me that if I say die then the kernel should simply force closed any file handles, free the process memory and remove the process from the process list. Trying to do the poor man's "Norton Ghost" at a local school for a WinXP lab (using dd over ssh), I had some stupid issues. The NIC in question was an onboard SiS 900. Here's what I had using various "live-cd" distros: winxp (installed) - i got an IP address knoppix and DSL (both debian) - I got an IP address System Rescue CD (gentoo) - no address g4u and obsd live cd (obsd) - no address (never did try fbsd, but obsd is fairly close) When I moved a sample PC closer to the DHCP server, every distro above got an address. The lab has an older d-link 24 port switch. There are 4 switches total between the lab and the dhcp server. When I moved the PC, it was then connected to a netgear 5-port 100mb switch, still about 4 switches away from the dhcp server. I tried setting an address with ifconfig for each of the failing distros, with no success. I vaguely remember getting some weird issues reagarding the PHY in obsd... I have no idea what the cause is (just discovered this last week), but am strongly suspicious of the d-link switch. I'm going to replace it (assuming funds are available) soon. Just thought I'd pass it on, in case it helps. Hi I have following ports installed on my FreeBSD 5-Stable system: mozilla-1.7.5_2,2 plugger-5.1.2 acroread-7.0.0 In Mozilla, Help->About Plug-ins, shows me a long list of Mime types that are handled by plugger: File name: npplugger.so Plugger version 5.1.2 [...cut text...] Config file: /usr/X11R6/etc/pluggerrc-5.1.2 Helper binary: plugger-5.1.2 Controller binary: plugger-controller OpenOffice helper: plugger-oohelper When I click on a pdf file, I can verify with the ps command that plugger-5.1.2 indeed has been launched: plugger-5.1.2 2576,1,38,27262978,0,0,920,607 \ acroread -tempFile +useFrontEndProgram \ -geometry +9000+9000 "$file" The mozilla window is empty and has "Running helper ..." in the bottom. However, nothing happens after this. No pdf file loaded, nothing! Any idea what is causing the problem? A problem in the plugger configuration file? Or a problem with acroread-7.0.0? On Mon, 21 Mar 2005, Francis Whittington wrote: Sorry if I wasn't clear on my hookup to the internet. (WLAN | to daughterXP cable DI-524 modemwirelessMain router XPbox |_bsd box Hi Francis, I'm cc'ing the list because that's the etiquette here; hope that's OK with you. The idea is that others might benefit from reading the discussion. Hope that shows it better. The router connects to the modem. All other connections are through router. Daughter's XP box is on the wireless LAN. my XP box and BSD box are hardwired to router. Your diagram got a bit mangled in the email, but I get the idea. Yes I did use a crossover cable to bsd box because it said router was Auto-MDI/MDI-X. Meaning you can use either straight through or crossover. That would be in windows though I guess. That auto business is a function of the hardware; it shouldn't matter what OS is running on it. If you get a link light, the wiring is good (usually). But technically one should use a straight-thru cable from a computer to a router, so it might be worth trying. So I gess I could try changing that. I did a "ping www.goggle.com" , so that is the same as being able to ping router (192.168.0.1).right? Not really, but if you can get through to the internet then the router connection is OK. I mean its getting to internet , just not seeing network. Let me add that i can ping bsd box (192.168.0.102) from main WinXP box, but I cannot ping daughter's XP box on the wireless LAN. She is the only one thats on the WLAN. Now...I can ping the routerand the bsd box from her XP box, but I can't ping the main XP box. So a "pingability" table might look like this: To FromBSD XP daughter router BSD -nono yes XP yes - ?? daughter yes ? -yes So basically, everyone is on the internet, but the local network at home is a mess. Bizarre. In your other email you said in part ifconfig -a shows that rl0: inet 192.168.0.102 netmask 0xff00 broadcast 192.168.0.255 Okay, now to winXP box: ipconfig /all gives us: Ethernet local Area: ip addy..192.168.0.100 subnet mask...255.255.255.0 default gateway...192.168.0.1 dhcp server...192.168.0.1 DNS servers...192.168.0.1 and gives the lease dates and all. ...which all looks OK: non-conflicting IPs, same netmask. So other than the possible cable issue mentioned above, about all I can think of is that maybe you have an IP address conflict after all. I notice you gave the BSD box a .102 IP - are you sure the DHCP server didn't also assign that IP to your daughter's machine? Check the D-Link's configuration using its web interface, and see what range of addresses it's set up to hand out. It would be a good idea to give your BSD box an address which is not in that range. I've scanned the log files and didn't see any unusual error messages. But that could be because I don't know what to look for. I've run FreeBSD for just about one year and had no Unix experience prior to that at all. I jumped from Windows, where somebody did everything for me to, FreeBSD where I have to figure things out on my own with only hints and suggestions. (Honestly, I find it funner this way!) I'll check to logs next time it goes down. I copied the results from ifconfig when everything is working to a file. As soon as I "lose the connection" I'll run ifconfig again. To get more defined regarding the loss of connection, it's almost as if I typed "ipfw flush" as root and cut myself down to the default "deny everything" rule. Sent emails will set unprocessed in the queue, when attempting to download e-mail, K-mail will return an unknown host error message, web browsers will either open to a blank white page or give me an invalid ULR error message. It even went down while viewing a video on Xine. The video just stopped, then I got an "invalid host" error message. As soon as I type /etc/netstart. Boom! everythings up an running as if nothing was ever wrong. Thanks again for your suggestions. failure to upgrade - cannot find epstopdf
I am upgrading kde and there is a failure while upgrading arts that it cannot find epstopdf. I have latex2e and tex installed but can't find this anywhere in /usr/local/. Do I need to have teTeX installed instead of tex and latex2e ? To ask this differently, how do I find out which port has a particular executable/script file ? That is why I started to look for a explanation, but I am sure of it, not because of the software I use to check temperature, but specially from my hand. Untill the last update, the system was always getting to such temperatures as soon as it was compiling for a while ( 5 minutes ). And the temperature was really high because my hand on the laptop was simply more hot than it is in these days. I know its pretty empirical as a proof, but the laptop is not compiling since 2 days, and still the temperature is now at 52 degrees Celsius, Before, in the last 3 months, every time I compiled something for longer than 5 minutes, it reached high temperatures, really high :-0 !!! > Since booting in to the new world, and running portmanager -u, as well > as streaming, plenty of work to keep the system quite loaded, it took > some time to get past 120F, and now seems to top out around ... 142.7F > it says now. It might be possible to convert it into a tunable (which would let you set it in /boot/loader.conf), but I don't know how early in the boot process tunables are available. Increasing system message buffer size
Hello FreeBSD Commmunity (again!) I'm working on a problem that would benefit from verbose logging of the boot process. Unfortunately my logging is SO verbose that it fills up the available system buffer. I'm trying to figure out how to change the buffer size. I'm on 5.3 Stable. It looks like one way to do it might be to recompile the kernel, with options MSGBUF_SIZE=65536 set. Is that the best way? If so, what is the default size of the buffer? I checked NOTES in /usr/src/sys/i386/conf but couldn't find any reference to it. I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks! X problems with Dell Inspiron 2600s
I have a couple of Dell Inspiron 2600s, and I can't run Xorg or Xfree86 on either of them from FreeBSD 5.3 Release. A Fedora Core 3 locks up solid with the same machines. I'd suspect a video hardware problem, except I have two failing machines, and "that Microsoft thing" works fine on both. The video is Intel 830M, and the display is a 1024x768 LCD. These should run with the i810 "family" drivers, I thought. I read about problems with earlier BIOSen, so I upgraded to the latest (A011), but no joy. I've tried a few things, but I'm probably going in circles at this point. So, I will keep it simple. source code for pam modules
I am an embedded software developer and I was wondering if anyone could help me find the source code for the pam modules, specifically pam_tacplus. Does the mpt(4) driver work for the LSI Logic 929X chipset?
Hi, I am thinking of getting an LSI Logic LSI7202XP-LC Fibre Channel card (uses 929X). I read the hardware compatibility list for FreeBSD 5.3 and it says there is full support for the 929 chipset. I was wondering if that also extends to the 929X as well. The "X" means that the card uses PCI-X. I am assuming that it would work, but a few loose assumptions has left me with a 5.6TB XServe RAID that I can't talk to! :( I also got the Apple FC card, which uses the 929X chipset, and FreeBSD does not recognize it at all. Supposedly Apple made some modifications to it but there's no way of seeing what those are. Also: When I boot the card into a Windows XP machine it says "New Hardware Found". So if anybody know if the LSI7202XP-LC with the 929X chipset would work, I would appreciate any experience you can share. On a side note (sort of related), does the GENERIC kernel on the installation ISO have the mpt(4) compiled into it? thanks. OT: howto install RT32?
Hi all, I followed the FreeBSD installation instructions for RT32 on the RT wiki, and installed Request Tracker via ports. Then I modified my http.conf file as described on wiki, but after connecting to the new RT page, I get the "save as or open with" box from Firefox, because it's a PHTML file. Any ideas why? But I am not sure if this is really the RT login page, because when I save this phtml file and open it, I get the index.php page (as source) under the old DocumentRoot from before I modified the http.conf file... Any ideas on this? I did not found anything on Google :( Greetings and TIA, Matthias -- They said the same thing about Urkle; that little snot. Re: GPL Upheld in Mich -- Seems Relevant to Adaptec
On 2005 Mar 21, at 1:48 PM, Theo de Raadt wrote: Claiming ISO-9001 when you are not following the processes can get Adaptec into serious legal problems. The Internet is a fascinating thing. I certainly won't claim to be an expert on these matters, but the quick research I've done since I got Theo's note has done plenty to back this statement. (For those of you just joining us, this Slashdot article has links to relevant emails: http://bsd.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/03/20/1944233 ) I make no claims for the validity of the sources I cite. This is not a formal investigation of the matter. Corrections are most welcome. First, as to the question of Adaptec and ISO 9001, this press release, dated 1995 September 13 http://ftp.isu.edu.tw/pub/Hardware/ADAPTEC/literature/0913nr.txt states: The Electronics Industries Quality Registry has granted ISO 9001 certification to Adaptec for the "design and manufacture of integrated circuits," according to a statement released today by Adaptec CEO Grant Saviers. My casual search provided no indication that the certification has been revoked. Since I would think that such revocation would be big news, I assume that they still hold their certification. We have already heard from a former Adaptec employee that the quality of their RAID products is questionable: http://www.sigmasoft.com/~openbsd/archive/openbsd-misc/200503/ msg01250.html I don't know when Scott worked at Adaptec, but I rather suspect that he was there for at least some time in the past decade. Next, we move on to what ISO 9001 specifies. The document is expensive to obtain, but there are free summaries available, including this one: http://praxiom.com/iso-9001.htm http://praxiom.com/iso-9001-b.htm Everything that Theo has been asking for is easily covered by what's described in those documents. (I *knew* I wasn't nuts for thinking that these requests are standard outside the IT industry!) Some particularly relevant bullet points include: 7.3.2 Define design and development inputs * Specify product design and development inputs. * Record product design and development input definitions. * Review product design and development input definitions. 7.3.3 Generate design and development outputs * Create product design and development outputs. * Approve design and development outputs prior to release. * Use design and development outputs to control product quality. Now, I know the bureaucratic mind well enough to realize that, in the full ISO 9001 specification, this might be defined into uselessness. Perhaps ``input'' and ``output'' in this context are more closely related to ``shotput'' and ``kaput.'' But I doubt it. It would also seem that we are, AT THIS VERY MOMENT, witnessing a breakdown of ISO 9001's remedial requirements. 8.2.1 Monitor and measure customer satisfaction * Identify ways to monitor and measure customer satisfaction. * Monitor and measure customer satisfaction. * Use customer satisfaction information. Here we have customers who have purchased THOUSANDS of units from Adaptec up in arms...yet there is no indication that Adaptec is using that information in any productive fashion at all. Since we seem to be talking into a black hole, it may well be that they aren't even monitoring customer satisfaction--let alone measuring it. Again, I'm brand-new to this whole ISO 9001 thing. It's obviously quite comprehensive, but it also looks like it's mostly common sense. Plan what you're going to do before you do it, follow (and amend) your plans, document and test everything. Get help from your customers and give them what they ask for. Even if Adaptec has been following the letter of ISO 9001, this recent brouhaha pretty clearly demonstrates that they haven't been following its spirit. Do you mean reinstall? I could try, but as you might know, installing OpenOffice requires a lot of time, patience and workload of your system (not to mention hd-space). But if I did? phpmyadmin on FreeBSD 5.3
Hello, Im trying to install apache, php4, mysql and phpmyadmin on my computer. Firstly I installed the packages for apache and php. Then I did "cd /usr/ports/databases/phpmyadmin && make install distclean" but that returns with the following error bash-3.00# cd /usr/ports/databases/phpmyadmin && make install distclean You may use the following additional build option: WITH_SUPHP=yes Install appropriately for use with the www/suphp port [default: no] Unknown extension mysqli for PHP 4. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/databases/phpmyadmin. bash-3.00# After this I installed the package php4-mysql I tried it again and got the same error. Can anyone tell me wich things I need to do in order to get phpmyadmin installed and working? Thanks in advance, Roeland ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

make installworld target for Minimal/Developer/etc
Hi All, During standard sysinstall, we get the option of installing a Minimal System, a Developer System. etc. When doing a "make installworld" I would like to be able to make a "Minimal Install", having a make target for this seems reasonable to me, but perhaps not technically sound. Is there a way to do this? Documentation? I see a use for this, when installing jails for example, or for possibly creating binary updates for an existing "Minimal System". Show me that it's not a bug in FreeBSD first. I never had the problem in Windows NT. I also don't believe in throwing darts to solve problems. -- Anthony Anthony - A few things - considering the hardware is 8 years plus, can we assume you never updated/upgraded the firmware on the above mentioned. Assuming that to be true, you are taking an virtually new OS (FreeBSD in this case) and imposing it on old hardware (again, assuming the firmware was never upgraded) and expect it to preform without issues. Any Server+ or even A+ tech knows that from time to time, you need to upgrade/update your firmware. So, why not give it a shot? At least try to bring your 8 year old hardware a bit closer to 2004/2005 with a firmware hoist. It can't hurt - if anything, it will allow many new features added to the old stuff to whatever OS of choice you deem to use. That's just plain common sence. If the TCP connection is in FIN_WAIT_2, FreeBSD may send out ACKs periodicly, trying to nudge the other side to send a FIN to finish closing the connection. sshd configuration after mergemaster
I've just completed a successful transition from 5.3-BETA7 to 5.3-RELEASE via the usual "makeworld" procedures. Thanks to spending some time with "mergemaster -p", all of my configuration seems to have carried over and is working perfectly, with the exception of ssh. The only difference between the original and temporary versions of sshd_config was a single line I had entered in order to prevent "root" from logging in via ssh as "root". Everything else, with the obvious exception of the config file signature, was the same. Yet I'm now getting errors when I try to ssh from any location (remote, LAN, even testing on the same terminal). If I don't do "-v", the terminal window just disappears or shows no feedback. "-v" shows "no more authentication methods to try". I then found a passage in a SSHD book that says to copy sshd.pam from the OpenSSH contrib folder in src to /etc/pam.d/ssh, and change the owner to root and permissions to 664. This certainly did something, as -v now shows quite a different message: invalid facility 'sshd' (ignored) fatal: PAM: initialisation failed I have not used PAM before. Is it now a requirement in order to use ssh? or am I going overboard to solve a simple problem? So FIN_WAIT_2 is the time the server waits to receive the FIN from the client, but although it doesn't get this last FIN message yet, it sends ACK's for the expected FIN message? It's not uncommon for some clients (think dialup users running Win98), to drop the connection rather rather than close it properly. So the client has time to ACK the server's FIN, but the user closes the dialup connection, so the application hasn't sent the FIN? Your system should time out these connections after a while. Good decision:-) Greetings, Robert! ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

How do I get growfs to work on a gvinum mirror?
Hi, Please excuse the re-post. I'm hoping that my question just got lost in the numerous conversations over the weekend and that I'm not suffering from bleading-edge technology that nobody else has tried in production yet. How do I make growfs actually grow a gvinum disk on FreeBSD 5.3? I've read the man pages, the Handbook, and done some searching with no luck. To help understand what I'm trying to accomplish here, I've created a filesystem that mounts to /export on a gvinum volume. The volume is configured as a mirror. I want to double it's size. To do this I used gvinum to add a subdisk to each plex of the mirror (this worked fine). gvinum now reports the volume as 32GB (it used to be 16GB). The filesystem is still 16GB. When I unmount the filesystem and run growfs on the device it claims there is no space to grow: # growfs -s 33554432 /dev/gvinum/export growfs: we are not growing (8388608 -> 8388608) And yet # disklabel /dev/gvinum/export # /dev/gvinum/export: 3 partitions: #size offsetfstype [fsize bsize bps/cpg] a: 3355443204.2BSD 2048 16384 0 b: 335544320 swap c: 335544320unused0 0 # "raw" part, don't edit disklabel: partition c doesn't cover the whole unit! disklabel: An incorrect partition c may cause problems for standard system utilities better still: # gvinum list 2 drives: D a State: up /dev/ad1s1g A: 58662/108326 MB (54%) D b State: up /dev/ad0s1g A: 58662/108326 MB (54%) 5 volumes: ... There must be some way to kill a process regardless of its state. For what it's worth, you might do better to try "kill -HUP" a process first, then "kill -TERM", before resorting to "kill -9" (aka "kill -KILL"). Using less than maximum force gives the process a chance to notice it is supposed to go away and shut down more cleanly. This may help. However, if you do get a process stuck which won't go away when you kill -9 it, consider doing a "ps axl" and see what it's WCHAN is stuck on. just finished install
Hi Paul, Just wanted to say that I am reading as much as I can. UNIX books, freeBSD handbook, websites, manpages, etc. I am 47, have 5 daughters, and work 2 jobs, none of which have anything to do with computers. I bought my first computer in 1998(they had no computer classes when i was in school). I have just gotten interested in learning BSD. Linux would have been okay too, but I read BSD was better. I came on this forum to get a little help when I get frustrated. I do not have all the time in the world for this. Wish i did sometimes. Its relaxing...LOL! Besides...here is better than getting bitched at in #freebsdhelp to go read. Thanks for the suggestions though. fewjr/Buddy ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Change the resolv.conf to look at itself (127.0.0.1) and setup BIND with some simple DNS and RDNS records. You could use pretty much any box on your network for DNS, but the key is that it has to know about the internal space. Or fix your /etc/host.conf to lookup in files first and then use DNS, then put your local network in /etc/hosts. Much simpler for a small network. E.g. /etc/host.conf # First try the /etc/hosts file hosts # Now try the nameserver next. bind And /etc/hosts 192.168.0.1 myhost Then leave resolv.conf alone.
