That used to be the case, but since OpenVPN 2 came out, it is no longer
necessary.

Thank you very much - you got no output because you have no md devices in
use.  I have a few in use and this is the output I get:

# mdconfig -l
md3 md2 md1 md0

But I could just as easily get:

# mdconfig -l
md9 md8 md5 md3

Hmm...I just saw that that line is in perl, and I do not have perl
installed on any of my 6.0 machines ... I am not sure I want to install it
just for this one shell script :(

Newly developed mailling list search engine needs testing

Firstly, let me introduce myself. I am Choy Kho Yee, an comp. sci.
undergraduate student in Osaka University. For my final year thesis, I
have developed a mailing list archive management system called "MLwiki".

The name MLwiki is made up from the words "Mailing List" and "Wiki". It
was developed to overcome some weaknesses of the existing mailing list
archiving and searching system and to combine the power of wiki and the
huge amount of information in the mailing list archive. With MLwiki, it
is hoped that users can get the information they want faster and easier.

New Canon LiDE60; and it seems to need a reference(?) in source

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x221c [CanoScan],
chip=GL841) at libusb:/dev/usb4:/dev/ugen0

#scanimage -L
device `genesys:libusb:/dev/usb4:/dev/ugen0' is a Canon LiDE 60
flatbed scanner

#dmesg
ugen0: Canon CanoScan, rev 2.00/3.06, addr 2

I've read back to some archived questions, and it seems (I'm guessing)
that this scanner lacks a reference in these two files:

/usr/src/sys/dev/usb/uscanner.c
/usr/src/sys/dev/usb/usbdevs

I say this, because while the above queries turn up the correct
info[1] for the scanner, there is no uscanner0 device created in /dev/
on this system:

supported in the genesys backend, as of the most recent version of the
sane-backends, 1.0.17.

You are probably best searching samba.org for "LDAP" and searching
openldap.org for "samba".  There are many articles on both sites.  In
particular the official Samba HOWTO document has a nice elementary
chapter on configuring LDAP for samba.  That might be the best place for
you to start.

That machine "Mark-Kanes-Computer.local." is the machine that's
sharing it over the network, which runs Mac OS X Jaguar.


Looks like you're sending postscript files from the FreeBSD
machine to the MacOS machine.

Pick one such postscript file.  How does it start out?  The
first line should start with the four characters:   %!PS
If it does not, then add those four characters and see what
happens.

If that doesn't work, then try sending the job using
   lpr -l

instead of a plain 'lpr' command.  That's a lowercase-L that
I'm adding there.

there are almost too many options to mention..

however you should be able to implement pptp
tunnels (as used on windows) using mpd (in ports)
alternatively there is always ssh or ipsec.
(or a combination of them)

If as you suggest, both ends are freebsd, then I've
used mpd over ssh 
with great effect.

use the 'tcp transport' option of mpd and connect it
through an ssh tunnel.

is the 'client' roaming or at a fixed address? if a
fixed address then 
ipsec becomes easier.

Your gs version doesn't have driver "hpdj"

I recently upgrade apsfilter and all support packages. On install, while
attempting to configure for an older HP deskjet printer I get the apsfilter
configuration error;

Your gs version doesn't have driver "hpdj"

While installing ghostscript-gnu, I noticed that -all- print drivers are 
selected
for install. Maybe they take up little room. Fine, I thought. I'll install
them all.

It seems like the older hpdj files are -not- bundled into version 
ghostscript-gnu-7.07_14

Any pointers would be helpful.

I've written a BruteForceBlocer, you can install it from ports as well,
check security/bruteforceblocker.

IPsec, VPN and FreeBSD

[gahn]

Hi:

We intend to build IPSec based VPN server on FreeBSD
platform so that we can access internal network of a
lab. The remote side will use VPN client and could be
from anywhere of the Internet, or may be from the
another site of the company. From the hnadbook, I saw
the sample of site-to-site configurations and we do
have one FreeBSD firewall (running ipfw) on both site
and another one on another site (both have firewalls
on them), can we do that?  Also what about the
client-server model? What kind of clients do we need
in order to connect to the FreeBSD/IPsec/VPN? Any
tips/information for the configuration of the
clients/server model on internet?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

What version of FreeBSD are you using. It can make a difference as to 
which way want to you go. If you are using 6.0, you can use portsnap, 
which is so much faster than anything else, it's laughable. I only use 
cvsup for updating src.

I got it working once I quit kdm. Apparently the remote console is only

Not only do I have a fairly good memory -- I also know how to check the CVS 
logs to
make sure I get the details correct. :-)

It is all too often the case that if one wants support for the latest
hardware, one has to run the latest version of an OS.

Luckily for you, the transition from 5.x to 6.x is fairly painless.

Checking the source code this chip does seem to be one of those supported 
by the snd_atiixp driver in -CURRENT and 6-STABLE.

Yeah, but I am looking for "0" ... 8,9,11,14 are all in use ... but 0-7
are not.  I want to:

"starting with zero, find the lowest number that is NOT in this list"

(where "this list" is the output of mdconfig -l, which shows which md
devices are currently in use)

I can't help you with a greylist solution, but how many users do you 
have that ssh in from the outside?

If you don't have too many, and they come from stable IP addresses, you 
could always set up firewall rules to allow specific connections and 
block other attempts to connect to port 22:

# My Trusted SSH Sites

jim="234.56.78.90"
. . .

# SSH Login - Allow only trusted incoming on outside interface
${fwcmd} add pass log tcp from ${dan} to any 22 in via ${oif} setup

You might wonder what Portindex buys you. You have to appreciate that 
you can cvsup, create an HTML listing to the cvsweb cgi facility using 
a log of the cvsup session, create a new INDEX, and an INDEX.db 
relatively quickly. The process is all automated via a shell script.

A typical time for the entire sequence of processing steps using a local 
cvsup mirror is 2 minutes. I had an occasion to time the script because 
of a recent question on the es.freebsd list. I think that 2 minutes is 
as fast as it will run on my systems and do something.

The network is 1000baseT but that doesn't make cvsup run any faster than 
a 100baseT connection. The port people have been playing with some of 
the make features and that adds 5-10 minutes or so because the cache 
entries needs to be updated for all of the ports that use the make file 
that was modified. Occasionally you have to update the entire cache and 
that process is slower than a make index.

shell scripting question (mdconfig device choosing)

Hello,

When I mdconfig a device and _do not_ specify a particular numbered md
device (with the -u flag), it just chooses an unused device number for
me.  Which makes me happy.

Unfortunately, mdconfig chooses the next available device, from the
highest device currently in use, regardless of whether or not there are
much lower devices unused.

For instance, if I have md0 and md1 in use, mdconfig will auto choose
md2.  Good.  However if I only have md10 and md11 in use, mdconfig will
NOT choose md0, it will choose md12.

I need it to choose the lowest available unused device.

How can I do this in a bit of /bin/sh shell code ?  I can check what
devices are in use with `mdconfig -l`, like so:

# mdconfig -l
md0

and I know how to use awk to strip away the leading "md" from each piece
of the output ... but I do not know how to take output like:

8 9 11 14

and decide that the lowest available number is "0".  How can I do this ?

Is A Sound Card Required For Music Player Daemon?

I am running FBSD 6.0 on a headless system with no sound card.  What I 
had hoped to do was get Music Player Daemon running on this box and then 
send it's output to Icecast2.  The actual "sound" would be generated by 
other devices with sound cards.


But in looking over the mpd.conf file, it appears a sound card is 
needed.  Does Icecast then take the "sound" and re-digitize it in its 
own format?  I'm confused.

Yes.  This makes an enormous difference in boot up times.
With vm.old_contigmalloc=1, fxp0 probes within a few seconds.
Without it, fxp0 takes more than 7 minutes to probe.

I am CC this to a few people on the freebsd-current list that had
somewhat simular symptoms with other hardware.

option "vm.old_contigmalloc=1"?

Some people are seeing slow boot/configuration with new style
vm_page_alloc_contig/contigmalloc.

I am doing some profiling of vm_page_alloc_contig() and have found
that larger physical memory configurations makes these problems much worse.

I identified 4-5 places that can be changed to decrease the number
of page tables that is needed to be checked before an allocating a range.
Some of the changes will only occasionally save a few page checks, but
others changes could save several hundred or more page checks on every call.

The old contigmalloc could be optimized also, but it uses the lower
addressed physical pages, which turns out to be used less during the
boot process than the upper addressed physical pages.

You serve yourself very well by recompiling all your ports or  
reinstalling the packages to be the ones built against 6.0.  This is

The index is a list of all of the ports, what each port depends on, who
the maintainer is and various other data.  It's used by the 'make search'
command (see ports(7)) an a few other make targets you can invoke from
/usr/ports, plus it's used quite extensively by portupgrade(8).  Other
port maintenance software does not need an index file -- generally they
work out the dependency relations between different packages on the fly.

You don't need to keep running 'make index' all the time.  Firstly, you
can download a freshly build index by 'make fetchindex' -- which is
sufficient for most uses. If you use the new portsnap(1) facility
instead of cvsup(1), you'll get a freshly built index file included
automatically.  Or (blowing my own trumpet here...) you can install
sysutils/p5-FreeBSD-Portindex which gives you a method of incrementally
updating your index file based on what was modified during the previous
cvsup session (or however you choose to upgrade your ports).

It's the index that's used to determine if installed ports are up to 
date. And yes, it takes a frickin' long time to generate...


I've automated it in my CVSup script, and run it at night, when I don't

I want to use my computer as gateway to internet for the other
computers in my home. How I can sharing internet connection on my 
computer to the rest computers in my home? I hve 2 computers (my and 
my wife (rl0 192.168.1.2)).


You need to configure a firewall and network address translation (NAT).

I have had good results using the portsnap and portupgrade/portinstall
utilities. The other responses you've received point to the relevant
parts of the FreeBSD handbook/manual pages.

Welcome to FreeBSD!

In FreeBSD, we use the CVS system to keep the ports tree up to date. You 
can use Ananymous CVS, CVSup, or Portsnap to keep your ports collection 
up to date.

Just "cd" into the /usr/ports//

and type "make install clean"

It will fetch all the needed dependencies, kinda fun to watch if
your new to it :)

But now I've installed 6.0 for the first time on a machine that I plan 
on making a production box, and I've still noticed some of the 
installation "oddities."


I've noticed zero oddities, if you're prepared as recommended in the 
Handbook 
(http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/install-pre.html)...


Installation of 6.0 was dirt simple. Here's how i did it:

One big "nuisance" is that you cannot safely cancel out of many/some 
of the sysinstall options during install.  During install of fxp1 (the 
first and only NIC I chose), I chose to let it grab a DHCP address, 
then cancelled out of the NIC config.  Instead of dropping me back to 
choose another NIC, or the same NIC, the install just proceeded on, as 
if I'd completed my network config (I did revisit it at the end of the 
install, but still...esp. for a newbie, that's an unnecessary 
stumbling block).


When setup asks if you want to go back and change anything (before it 
installs the system), if you say yes, you get sysintall's menu--where 
you can configure/reconfigure your network interfaces, as well as all 
the other options that you were asked about.


Or, you can finish the install and edit /etc/rc.conf manually...it's one 
line to configure a network card:


   ifconfig_xl0="inet 123.45.67.89 netmask 255.255.255.0"


The one that really hit me though was the mail config.  There were 
more mail config options than I'm used to from previous 4.x and 5.x 
installs, I cancelled out of it without choosing.  Post-install, 
sendmail was running.  I figured...fine...it installed a default.  No 
big deal.


Sendmail is *always* installed as part of the base system, since so many 
programs rely on it being there.



So...I fired up sysinstall, navigated to: Configure > Networking > 
Mail
> Postfix (using FTP server as the source...didn't feel like putting 
> in

the CD).

Well...it installed Postfix and it's dependencies, message popped up 
that it was the "default" MTAbut sendmail is still there, and 
postfix is not running (I don't see an RC script either to start it 
and /etc/mailer.conf is unchanged).  So...I went through, and picked 
"No MTA" in sysinstall.  Well...sendmail is still running, and postfix 
is still installed (can't say I expected removalbut the behavior 
for defaulting to sendmail and then going back and picking postfix 
later doesn't make sense).


You should install Postfix via the ports once your base system is up and 
running.


If you do that, it will prompt you if you want Postfix to edit 
/etc/mailer.conf. At the end of the install, it gives you the exact 
lines you need to put in /etc/rc.conf to disable sendmail and use 
Postfix.


Here's how I do it:

Don't be afraid of the ports collection. Ports are your friend!


Any help would be appreciated (granted, I haven't gotten that far to 
where I absolutely cannot re-install...but I really shouldn't have to. 
If sendmail was in some kind of a pkg_db or something, I could simply 
remove sendmail and hopefully picking postfix as the MTA from 
sysinstall would install it insteadbut it doesn't appear to be 
like that).


There's no need to go back and reinstall.

You should consider the installation procedure as nothing more than a 
means of getting all the files off the CD and onto your hard drive. From 
that point forward, FreeBSD is easily configured without using 
sysinstall. All you need to know how to do is use a keyboard. :-)


Again, sendmail is part of the base system and is always installed. No 
need to remove it--you can easily run Postfix without having to remove 
sendmail.


I invite you to check out my FreeBSD Cheat Sheets; you'll find FreeBSD 
isn't nearly that hard to setup and use.

FBSD5 and FBSD6 aren't too keen on the SFU/AD NIS server

My current situation is that I have a Solaris based NIS server
and various client machines, including FreeBSD.

A production FreeBSD 5 machine and a test FreeBSD 6 machine work just
fine with it, except for a small glitch on the FreeBSD 6 machine:

The FreeBSD 5 machine correctly lists all the maps.

I want to move to a NIS server provided by Microsoft's Services for
Unix running on an Active Directory domain controller. FreeBSD 6 seems
to work OK, though the error message changes slightly:

>speyburn# ypwhich -m
>ypwhich: can't find the master of `: reason: No such map in server's domain

(only one quote rather than two). But it actually functions fine:

I can log in with no problem. Unfortunately the FreeBSD 5 machine does
not work fine at all. Firstly it can only find one map:

And it can't convert login names to UIDs:

If anyone has experience of pointing FreeBSD at an SFU/AD NIS server

I really want to move to the AD NIS so if I have to I'll replace the
machine with one running FreeBSD 6, but I'd prefer not to have to.

I've got something similar on 5.4, not tested on 6.0. The fix in my
case was building the port against openssl-stable (i.e. 0.9.7i)
Try building the port using WITH_OPENSSL_STABLE=YES

What'a a stale dependancy and how to fix?

"portupgrade -a" told me to do "pkgdb -F".

"pkgdb -F" asked me what to do with stale dependancies and I didn't know what 
to do.

What should I do?
Most of these are the same items that my attempts at a firefox install hangs

courier-imap and different logging in jail

Hi,

 I installed courier-imap 4.0.6 in a jail recently and it's logging to 
/var/log/maillog as 'couriertcpd'. That means I cannot use "!pop3d" and 
"!imapd" in syslog.conf to redirect those logs to another file. Strange 
enough this isn't how it works in other servers that aren't using jails.


 Could it be related to the jail ? I copied and pasted the same 
configuration from another non-jail server to this one.

Thanks and glad to hear that Skype is working.  Listening to music, etc. 
works just fine for me too, it's how to get input from the mic which I'm 
stuck on.  The machine is dual boot so I know the hardware works and the 
things are plugged into the right place (Skype works when running XP). 
This must be a FreeBSD config thing.


I've tried, unsuccessfully, working with mixer, rawrec, wmrecord and 
audacity to capture sound, so I'm now looking for a simple 'is your 
microphone working' test akin to the 'cat some_small_file > /dev/dsp' 
for testing noise coming out of the speakers (which still works).


'cat /dev/dsp > foo', speaking for a bit into the mic, then cntl-c to 
stop, does create a non-empty file but then a 'cat foo > /dev/dsp' 
doesn't produce any sound.  The rawrec port seems promising but no love 
from 'rawrec foo.raw' / 'rawplay foo.raw'.  All this with mixer showing 
non-zero levels for all channels and trying it with the recording source 
as mic and then line.  Something's gotta give here.



Maybe try updating to RELEASE-p8?


Indeed I'll update anyway but I don't believe any of those patches are 
sound related.

One way or another, the file got corrupted.  It won't have anything to
do with having been on NTFS for part of its life; much more likely it
got corrupted in one of the network transfers (e.g., FTP in "text" mode).

I'm sure you could pay for commercial blog software or blog hosting instead, if 
you preferred to do that.  Or perhaps there are some other open-source blog 
suites which are more suited to your multiuser requirements than Wordpress.


(Multiple user homepages, one blog with multiple users per company, works fine 
for me, although I have tried making a copy or two and it would take about 3 MB 
per extra user if you wanted to do it the "heavyweight" way.)

The first choice, while seeming to be the better of the 2 looked to be a

Why did symlinks fix libgmodule-2.0.so.600 not found error?

I tried to install firefox from ports.  It didn't work, and after that kscd (a 
KDE cd player) stopped working.  Kscd would complain libgmodule-2.0.so.600 
not found.  Some searching led me to creating sysmlinks from 
libmodule-2.0.so.0 to it.  Then kscd complained about libgthread-2.0.so.600. 
After creating that symlink kscd now works.

Why did the borked firefox install do that?

Was that the right fix, should I do something different?

Most importantly, what else might be screwed up that I don't know about?


Anyone know of some good tutorials about installation trouble-shooting?  I'm 
having mostly failures so far and don't know how to recover or what I might 
be damaging?

Is your wife's PC running Windows or FreeBSD?

Can your wife's PC ping your PC?
   If not then that is the first problem to solve.
Can your wife's PC ping an outside address given as numbers?
 (Like ping -c 4 18.7.22.69)
 If she can ping by number address but not by host name then the 
problem is her DNS

 configuration.
 If she can't ping by number address and you can then your PC is not 
forwarding
 things correctly - I've done that before but I don't remember all the 
details.


The more information you can give us the more likely we will be able to 
help.

Well, then perhaps PicoBSD should be entirely removed from FreeBSD to

the world than there are FreeBSD boxes.

Secondarily, since FreeBSD has pretty good Linux emulation any package
that has been ported to Linux might run on FreeBSD. So there is less
motivation/reason to make a native FreeBSD port.

Until recently I managed a very similar setup. I think all you need is

natd_interface=rl0
natd_flags="-log_ipfw_denied -log_denied"

The latter is just so that you can see spurious connection attempts 
in /var/log/security. Check man natd for more info.

Also, you'll have to either statically configure your wife's PC to use 
192.168.1.2 (or whatever), default gateway/route 192.168.1.1 and proper DNS. 
Alternatively install and configure dhcpd, or, which I like more for a simple 
application like that, dnsmasq. Google will tell you more :-)

If there is a better document, I'll certainly try it.

I didn't do anything with crunchgen, I just left everything at the
default settings. Basically, I installed FreeBSD and then ran the
'picobsd bridge' script, and finally chose "Build it" from the menu
without doing or changing anything else.

I still obtain error when compile /usr/ports/math/scilab

I only did a three-minute code inspection to reach my conclusion.  For
me, I'd want to be a little more sure what's going on before logging a
bug.  Preferably have a fix, too.  I don't have time for that right
now, but feel free to do it yourself.  Try changing sysctl.c so that
the memory calculation is done in a wider data type...

upgrading apache+modssl

I am having problems upgrading from

apache+mod_ssl-1.3.34+2.8.25

to

apache+mod_ssl-1.3.34+2.8.25_2

First I tried using this

portupgrade -R apache+mod_ssl-1.3.34+2.8.25

which gives me this error;

The correct path to my perl is /usr/local/bin/perl... how/where can I
specify that so portupgrade acknowledges that fact?

Alternatively, I tried installing with 'make install clean' from
/usr/ports/www/apache13-modssl, and get this error;

We've seen that reported before, on more than one platform (I recall
hearing about it on OS X, for instance).  But no one's ever been able
to explain what causes it.  It's interesting to hear that a full
database reinstall made it go away for you, but that was certainly
overkill.  Do you have the time to experiment with the locale settings
and see if you can identify the difference between the cases where it
happens and those where it doesn't?

Do you have any other LC_xxx variables set?  How about LANG?  Is that

VPN / Bridge

Hello,

I've been trying to create a tunnel/bridge between two networks which  
both reside behind a FreeBSD router using NAT. I've achieved it using  
the handbook example in chapter 14.10. Clients on network A are able  
to ping clients on network B and clients on network A are able to map  
samba shares on the NAT box/gateway of network B. The example however  
uses two different subnets to route traffic between both networks.  
Unfortunately broadcasts will not travel through the tunnel which  
causes Apple's bonjour (called rendezvous earlier) not being able to  
discover clients on the other network.


What I want to achieve is what I believe a bridge between both  
networks. The entire network A should be on the same subnet as  
network B:

Using the example from the handbook there was no additional

new setup should also not require any additional settings on the  
clients aswell.


Can anyone give me an example or the necessary steps to create this  
kind of VPN?

No, I'm not using any special options. In fact, I've not formally
re-built all of userland since installing 5.4. Although, I have been
continually upgrading the various ports as they become available. So,
prior to the subversion upgrade, pkg_version reports all other ports
up-to-date.

That's odd.  You seem to have libasn1.so, but for some reason
svnversion can't find it at runtime.  Are you, by any chance
using any of the ldconfig-related options in your /etc/rc.conf
file, i.e.:

ldconfig_paths="..."

This could explain why some binaries cannot locate system libraries.
  


Yeah, it is pretty strange. My /etc/rc.conf file is clear of any 
ldconfig issues. I'll probably take another hard look at the make file 
and see what I can find. It could be there is a problem in the make file 
that I've missed. All things being equal, at this point in time I see 
only two alternatives:


1) The make file isn't pointing to the proper library
2) The library is old and doesn't contain the proper symbol.

None.  For me they just worked out of the box.  I had to upgrade the 
firmware in order to get SSH connections to work, but the java serial 
console just worked.


I would first make sure that you have the DRAC configured correctly 
especially gateway and DNS server IPs, then start by running a Web 
browser on the Dell itself and connecting to the DRAC.


The other thing is that I do get lots of warnings about certificates, so 
maybe over-aggressive browser security settings are your problem.


I realise I should have said that these are DRAC4s.  I don't believe 
that the underlying OS should matter a jot, but we have 5.4-RELEASE.  I 
can connect from a Mozilla browser with native java 1.4.  You do have 
Java installed, right?

Sounds like you got packages for the wrong FreeBSD version.  If you
wanted help with that, we would need more information.  But "pkg-add -r"
should get it right for basic installs.

Just "make install", perhaps?

bluefish isn't the "Command not found."  type is the command it can't
find.  type isn't a program; it's a builtin on sh-style shells, but
not on csh-style shells, which you appear to be using.  Try the
standard Unix command "which" instead.  [Not that I think it will help
in this case, because I don't think bluefish actually is installed at
that point.  But pkg_info(1) will tell you.]

FreeBSD 6.0 and PX-716SA

[Phusion]

I tried to install FreeBSD 6.0 on my system last night and couldn't
finish the install. The system has a SATA hard drive and SATA DVD
drive. I started the install and it let me create partitions and
format the drives fine, but when I got to the part where it asked for
installation media, it would recognize my Plextor PX-716SA. Does
anyone have any information related to if the PX-716SA is recognized
under FreeBSD 6.0? Let me know.

Blogin software recoendations

I would like to set up a internal bloging system at work for people to use
as a sort of "daily journal".

I want to host this on FreeBSD, preferably by using something that;s in the
ports tree. I've installed and got working wordpress, but it doesn't seem
to have the ability to allow me to define individual blogs for each person,
which is what I need. I'd like for each persons blog to have a unique URL.

Am I missing how to do this in wordpress? Or is there a more appropriate
choice?

smbclient failure

I have posted this on the SAMBA forum, but without results. Perhaps
someone here can assist me.

I am networking three WinXP Pro machines with one FreeBSD 5.4 PC. The
network seems to work correctly; however, I am still unable to get the
following command to work correctly. The x's replace the correct entry
obviously. This problem exists no matter which WinXP machine I attempt
to view the shares on. In this particular case, one WibXP machine is
named 'boss'. This is not a domain but rather a simple peer to peer
setup.

smbclient -Lboss -Uxx%

I decided to run the command as root preceeded by 'truss' so I could
generate a debug output.

This is the output from the command without 'truss'

Problems with pgsql 8.0.4 & freebsd 6: partially solved

I have been using a postgresql 8.0.4 server under freebsd 5.4 like a 
charm for a long time .
Yesterday, I upgraded freebsd from 5.4 to 6 via 
the CD (the iso was downloaded from ftp.freebsd.org).

Restating 
postgresql it happened:

# /usr/local/etc/rc.d/010.pgsql.sh start

And the server was down

After many attempts I discovered that the problem was connected to the
"setenv LC_ALL it_IT.ISO_8859-1" I had introduced in /usr/local/pgsql/.
cshrc
which corrupted something in the system and, even removing the 
line, 010.pgsql.sh went on failing to start the server

Having 
pg_dumped the data before the upgrading to 6, I have solved the problem 
by
1) eliminating the /usr/local/pgsql/data directory (BY THE WAY, 
remember to backup the pgsql *.conf files somewhere!!);
2) deinstalling 
the postgresql 8.0.4 server by means of "make deinstall";
3) removing 
the pgsql user;
4) reinstalling the postgresql 8.0.4 server;
5) copying 
the *.conf files under the data directory
6) pg_restoring the data

Now, of course I have left unmodified the .cshrc file (take notice that 
any attempt of modyfying the locale corrupts the postgresql server and 
you should start with a new reinstallation! I failed both adding a line 
"setenv LC_ALL it_IT.ISO_8859-1" and "setenv LC_ALL it_IT.ISO8859-1")

Now it all works even though an inoffensive warning comes up

Is there anything 
else I could do?

Broadcom BCM4401-B0 and memory upgrade issue.

Hello,

After the memory upgrade on my Laptop (HP nx5000) FreeBSD 6.0 stable, the
driver for NIC bfe0 (Broadcom BCM4401-B0) stops working. The NIC LED lights
are on. The bfe0 interface is up and active. However, I got a permanent
message on the console:

bfe0: watching timeout -- resetting.

This occurs in the case when I compile the new kernel without bfe driver and
load the bfe driver as module (if_bfe.ko). In the case when the driver is
compiled into the kernel, the system stalls during the boot or whenever I
try to configure the interface.

This behavior is reproducible on FreeBSD 6.0 RELENG_6 stable compiled from
checkout on 02.11.2005 and also from checkout on 23.01.2006. 

The problem occur only if the upgraded memory (RAM) exceeds 1GB. It does not
depend on the manufacturer of the memory chips and the number of occupied
slots. I already tried 2 1GB modules from Infineon DDR400 CL3 and two
modules from Crucial DDR333, CL2.5. It also does not depend on ACPI.

The problem does not occur under Windows XP.

What should be my next steps, in order to get NIC working?
Can I try NDIS for this NIC?

Any ideas are welcome. Thank you.

Messed up CUPS configuration

Dear list,

I'm currently switching to FreeBSD. Most things are going very well but  
every now and then I hit something which I can't solve on my own. I had  
managed to configure CUPS correctly and print with it but - if I'm correct  
this is the thing to do if you want to use modern printers rather than  
writing filters for lpr - but now the configuration is slightly incorrect  
and I'm getting the following message


lpd[408]: /dev/lp: No such file or directory

I know this means that the wrong device (/dev/lp as opposed to /dev/lpt0)  
has been specified and as a result the service won't start but I haven't  
been able to find the offending file.
