milter-ahead

2007-08-30 Thread David L. Aldridge
I used to use milter ahead with great success, but am trying,
unsuccessfully, to get the current version to work.

I apologize if this question is outside the scope of this list and, if
so, and someone is in a position to help me, I would invite personal
email to

Keyboard won't work.

2004-03-21 Thread David L. Murray

When trying to install BreeBSD 5.2, I can't get past
the main Sysinstall screen. The system won't respond to keyboard
commands. I'm trying to install from CD purchased from BSD Mall. I use
hard drive trays on my computer and am writing this
my eComstation drive.
 I've been able to glean from the messages that fly
by, this concerning the keyboard.

 It is on IRQ1
 keyboard attach attach returned 6
 atkbd0 attachreturned 6

 It is an old IBM PS2 keyboard
Motherboard EPOX 8K5A2+
Chipset VIA KT333 AGPset (KT333 +
VT8235)
Video card ATI Radeon 9000
Hard Drive IBM DTTA-371010 E182115 HG
10.1 GB
CD-RW Plextor PX-W4824TA
Processor AMD Athlon XP 2400+

 I went to the manual web pages and looked up the
returned 6 code. It said the device was not configured, essentially, it
said input or output on a special file referred to a device that did
not exist or made or made a request beyond the limits of the device.
I found nothing in the Handbook referring to this.Any
suggestions.There isn't much I can do if the the system
doesn't respond to the keyboard.As you can see the keyboard works
fine. It also works fine with my Linux drive. Thank you.

Usb ports are reffered to as com ports, chances are you have the usb mouse in
com1 or 2 or...

Try to set it to one of these in sysinstall.

Good luck

Hi,

Firstly, soundcards need to be compiled into the kernel, there not there by
default.

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/sound-setup.html

This section of the handbook goes through setting up a soundcard on freebsd.
Basically you add a line into your kernel configuration file, in the case of
your sound card

device pcm

and recompile the kernel. That simple, just make sure you read the handbook
section.

With reguards to your video problems, you really need to provide more
information. usually

- what you see
- paste the contents of /etc/X11/XF86Config
- paste the contents of /var/log/XFree86.0.log

and this should help in you getting a answer.

Radeon 8500 LE 128mb

2003-09-18 Thread David L
Has anyone had any success with dual head on this card ( that is, one monitor
on the vga output and another on the dvi output )?

usually if I do pciconf -v -l with one monitor hooked up only and to the vga
port, I get

:0:0: class=0x03 card=0x00041681 chip=0x514c1002 rev=0x00
hdr=0x00
vendor = 'ATI Technologies'
device = 'R200 Radeon 8500 / 8500LE'
class= display
subclass = VGA

as you can see it has the drm driver attached.

If I start with both monitors plugged in I get this:

:0:0: class=0x03 card=0x00041681 chip=0x514c1002 rev=0x00
hdr=0x00
vendor = 'ATI Technologies'
device = 'R200 Radeon 8500 / 8500LE'
class= display
subclass = VGA

what happened with the driver? The text in the console also looked blurry.
If I go to startx I get a no screens found error.

Does anyone know about this, had any experience, now where to look, or wether
this is more a freebsd current type question?

Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated, I really want to get dual
screen happening

Thanks in advance

Re: how long is installation time

2003-09-14 Thread David L
16mb of ram and you want to run KDE? I dont think that all that good an idea.
Try a light weight window manager this site

http://www.plig.org/xwinman/others.html

has a list of heaps of different windows manager and desktops, try something
labelled as minimalistic eg. fvwm or xfce maybe.

As far as installing it is concerned, your best bet is to go through
/stand/sysinstall and select configure, then distibutions and select the
Xfree distributions. once that is installed configure your x server (
configure=> xserver configuration once again in /stand/sysinstall )
and then install your windowmanager.

Hope that helps

Dual VGA out on Radeon 8500

2003-09-13 Thread David L
Just want to know if anyone here has gotten dual head working on a Ati Radeon
8500 Le graphics card. If so, can you tell me how you get the PCI bus ID of
the DVI port, I beleive you need that to set it in the XFree86 config file.

when I do pciconf -v -l it only shows

:0:0: class=0x03 card=0x00041681 chip=0x514c1002 rev=0x00
hdr=0x00
vendor = 'ATI Technologies'

Thanks

Soundblaster Audigy / Audigy 2

2003-09-11 Thread David L
It took me a while to get sound to work on my System as I was unfamiliar with
the modular kernel, so I wrote this howto. I hope it helps anyone that may be
having some problems getting it to work. If you see something that you
beleive I have done wrong, please let me know and I will make the
adjustments, or feel free to make the adjustments yourself and forward me a
copy.

Thanks

David
Getting sound on FreeBSD 5.1-Release with a Creative Audigy Sound Card.

I switched my main workstaion over to FreeBSD and found out that the Audigy card wasnt
supported by any of the drivers as specified in the handbook.

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/sound-setup.html

After a bit of searching on Google, I came across some promising finds. Firstly there
is the OSS drivers, however there not free, then I also came across this site

http://chibis.persons.gfk.ru/audigy/

from where I downloaded the file emu10kx-22-june-2003.tar.gz into my user directory.

Then I opened up a terminal and logged in as root.

I coppied the archive to my /tmp directory

# cp /home/myuseraccount/emu10kx-22-june-2003.tar.gz /tmp

and unzipped the archive

# tar -xvzf emu10kx-22-june-2003.tar.gz

then I changed into the directory that had just been unzipped

# cd /tmp/emu10kx

I then had to compile the driver and install it

# make install clean

This finished with no errors, and after reading some of the output I noticed it placed
a module in /boot/kernel ( I didnt exactly know that the file was a module, but I
found this out by Google )

I rebooted thinking that maybe on reboot it would load the driver.

After the reboot I did pciconf -l -v which gives me a list of all my pci devices and
what driver there using

# pciconf -l -v

Amongst other information it gave me this

:10:0: class=0x040100 card=0x00511102 chip=0x00041102
rev=0x03 hdr=0x00
 vendor = 'Creative Labs'
 device = 'EMU10K2 Audio Chipset ( SB Audigy )
 class = multimedia
 subclass = audio
the part that Im interested in is :10:0 because this tells me that
there is no driver attached to the card yet.

I remembered reading somewhere that the drivers got loaded as modules, so I found out
how to load a module, and I found out what the name of the module was by looking
through /boot/kernel until I found the right one , in this case the file is
snd_emu10kx.ko, so to load the module I did:

# kldload -v snd_emu10kx.ko

and to see if the card now had a driver attached I did

# pciconf -l -v

this time it had

:10:0: class=0x040100 card=0x00511102 chip=0x00041102 rev=0x03
hdr=0x00
vendor = 'Creative Labs'
device = 'EMU10K2 Audio Chipset (SB Audigy)'
class= multimedia
subclass = audio

see this time we can see that the driver is attached to the card. So I rebooted to see
if it loaded up at boot. After I rebooted I did pciconf -l -v again, but to my
dissapointment it wasnt loaded. After looking for help, I found out that you need to
set up /boot/loader.conf file in order for the module to be loaded at boot.

There are to versions of the file, one in /boot/ and one in /boot/defaults. The one in
/boot is completely empty, so I removed it. Make sure it is empty before you remove it

# edit loader.conf file is empty therefore:
# cd /boot
# rm loader.conf
# cp /boot/defaults/loader.conf /boot/

This gives us a file with most of the possible options commented out. This file is
similar to /etc/rc.conf in layout, and in the same way that /etc/rc.conf is read by
/etc/rc, loader.conf is read by /boot/loader.4th. However by default /boot/loader.4th
points to /boot/defaults/loader.conf , so the copy that you made into /boot/ stays
unedited whilst the one in /boot/defaults/ is the one that you modify.

This is basically the contents of my /boot/defaults/loader.conf file in order to get
the Audigy card working

exec=".( Loading /boot/loader.conf ) cr"

kernel="kernel" # /boot sub-directory containing kernel and modules
bootfile="kernel" # Kernel name (possibly absolute path)
kernel_options=""

userconfig_script_load="NO"
userconfig_script_name="/boot/kernel.conf"

loader_conf_files="/boot/device.hints /boot/loader.conf /boot/loader.conf.local
/boot/defaults/loader.conf"
nextboot_conf="/boot/nextboot.conf"

Re: JAVA and MOZILLA

2003-09-10 Thread David L
Ok, I got jdk13 installed from the ports, this is what I did

I first got rid of other versions of jdk as suggested by Simon, that didnt
work. Then I had a look at the Makefile and noticed this line

JDK13DIR= ${LOCALBASE}/linux-blackdown-jdk${JDK_VERSION}

so I installed linux-blackdown-jdk13 from ports and then tried to install
jdk13, again it did not work.

This time I had a better read of the makefile and decided to try changing

MAKE_ENV= ALT_BOOTDIR="${JDK13DIR}" \

to read the path of my linux jdk folder, it appears that without specifying
otherwise, it looks in /usr/local/java which doesnt exist ( at least not on
my system )

so I changed that line in the Makefile to read

MAKE_ENV= ALT_BOOTDIR="/usr/local/linux-sun-jdk1.3.1" \

and finally, it compiled without any further errors.

I then created a symlink to from the plugin to the mozilla directory and I now
have java on mozilla.
Thanks to all those that helped

Hope this helps someone else

Hi,
I to am using Mozilla 1.4 ( I beleive I failed to mention that in my original
post ) and I compiled it out of ports. I had heard that Java 1.3.1 worked
well with Mozilla, so I wne to try to install it. However when I try I get
the following.

dl# cd /usr/ports/java/jdk13
dl# ls
Makefilefiles pkg-message scripts
distinfopkg-descr pkg-plist work
dl# make package
===> Building for jdk-1.3.1p8_2

 just unset it, and start your build again.

Exiting because of the above error(s).
gmake: *** [sanity] Error 1

the make file in jdk13 has the following (I dont know if it of any relevence)
MAKE_ENV= ALT_BOOTDIR="${JDK13DIR}" \

Did you have any of these issues when compiling jdk13?
If you did, can you please let me know how you got around it.

Thanks

Yes, I did see the section in the handbook on getting browsersd set up but the
procedudre that it outlines for getting java to work doesnt seem to work.
The flash plugin works fine, but th java one gives me those errors.

Thanks, good luck getting it to work on opera

JAVA and MOZILLA

2003-09-08 Thread David L
I have been trying for quite some tiime to get Mozilla a Java Plugin that it
will actually use. I have tried the linux-xun-jdk versions 1.3.1 1.4.1 &
1.4.2 , konqueror web browser uses these succesfully, however I symlink
/usr/local/linux-sun-jdk1.4.1/jre/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavapluginoji.so to
/usr/X11R6/lib/mozilla/plugin/ and it wont accept it. I try the same with the
native JDK1.4.1 however in /usr/local/jdk1.4.1/jre/lib/i386/native_threads
there is only libhpi.so wich doesnt do anything.

I have also tried
/usr/local/diablo-jdk1.3.1/jre/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavapluginoji.so without
any succes.

I have a whole lot of other plugins that work perfectly , shockwave, mplayer,
acrobat , flash, etc, etc
However I have not been able to get Java to work on Mozilla ever

Currently I have the diablo-jdk plugin symlinked into the mozilla plugin
directory and this is the error I get when I star mozilla in a terminal
window

%mozilla &
[1] 38656
%No running window found.
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library
/usr/local/diablo-jdk1.3.1/jre/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so
[/usr/local/diablo-jdk1.3.1/jre/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so:
Undefined symbol "_vt$17nsGetServiceByCID"]

any help, links, abuse , will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Cant write to /etc

2003-09-01 Thread David L
I have just been tring to use sms_client and it gives me an error that it cant
write to /etc.
When I try to # touch /etc/smslock

it gives me

# touch: /etc/smslock: Read-only file system

It wont even let me edit rc.conf

I had a look at the permisions of /etc and they are fine

drwxr-xr-x

The only thing I can think of is that I recently set up loader.conf in order
to be able to load the module for my audigy card. So I had a look through
loader.conf and it doesnt have anything about loader.conf

Can anyone help ?
