1) Don't use telnet, use ssh, for security.
2) Are you in the wheel group?

Erik suggested I use ssh, I've never used ssh before and when I do it
says the connection has been refused.
The root user is in the wheel group, I have a user called jim which
is in a group called group he is able to login using telnet.

The best thing to do is to add the user jim to the wheel group, then you
should be able to login as him over ssh, then su to superuser, and do
virtually everything root can do. It is considered a security risk to allow
root access to ssh. But it's your server. So if you want root to be able to
login despite my warning. Edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config and find
#PermitRootLogin no, remove the hash, and change the no to yes

This is a pretty good guide to creating a build server, from your
fastest machine, so it does all the work, from updating world and kernel
source, to ports. Bascially it involves NFS and mounting the faster
computers /usr/src /usr/ports after thier compiled on the faster
machine.

I added an ndis linen to loader.conf to load the .ko

When I try

I don't know what else to try.
Try using ndisgen to make the wrapper. ndisgen should create a
bcwml5_sys.ko file in the directory, then you need to copy that file to
/boot/kernel/
After that in your loader.conf add bcmwl5_sys_load=YES along with the
ndis_load=YES. I beleive that the old way of creating the ndis drivers

I have the same wireless cards and this is the way i did it. So it

Re: Setting upFreeBSD with D-Link Wireless Router

2005-02-16 Thread Dustin Wilhoit
Yes it's very possible. :-) You may want to check out FreeRadius
(http://www.freeradius.org/). It is a free radius server which is what
I think you are looking for. I will state that you need to take some
time to read up on this a little bit as it can be irritating to set up
a radius server if you are not familiar with all the settings. I did
this for my D-link AP for fun then went back to wep for reasons I don't
remember. Ohh, FreeRadius has a port, so you can start there. :-)
It's a popular radius server for *nix. A medium-sized datacenter I
worked at used it for all communications gear and dial-up access.
Anyways, good luck sir.

Help w/ 3com net card on laptop

2004-12-31 Thread Dustin
I'm attempting to install FreeBSD 5.3 on an extra laptop I have over FTP, but I
have just one problem: I cannot get the card to work.

It's a 3com 3c575TX Fast Ehterlink XL Cardbus PC Card , which from here:

http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.3...6.html#ETHERNET
http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.3R/hardware-i386.html#ETHERNET

..looks like FreeBSD should support it.

The error goes something like this:

xl0: 3com 3c575TX Fast Etherlink XL Port 0x1000-0x103f IRQ5 at device 0.0 on
cardbus 0
xl0: couldn't map ports/memory
device-attach: xl0 attach Returned 6
cbb0: cardbus card activation failed

I've messed w/ the settings in the BIOS, ACPI is off, seems like the only way
to turn off PnP is to change the OS - this BIOS is goofy. I disabled the COM
and LPT ports to see if that would free up some IRQ's but no difference.

Any suggestions?

TIA,
D

RE: new card, still can't get X11 working

2004-09-08 Thread Dustin
I'm pretty sure DRM/DRI is disabled by default.

I haven't manually edited the xorg.conf file, instead I run
'xorgconfig'.

Update: I was able to find an ATI Rage Pro 8MB AGP card. I installed
it in the system, ran xorgconfig, then ran startx, and guess what. I
got into, and out of X w/ out crashing.. Once. So I tried it again,
this time the system crashed. - Very strange.

The problems seem to be intermittent. Sometimes I can get in, but when
I try to get out, it hangs.

Attached are the files.

BTW, when I come back up after a crash, is there something special I
should do?

Thanks much,

Dustin

This is how I am running now. DRI carshes my system. Hopefully its not
in the drivers, am am troubleshooting it now. DRI if off in the default

Also try some of this:

Option EnablePageFlip On

You should post you Xorg.conf on a web site for us to check if you can't
get it working, or email it to us. I would say not to freebsd because
it makes some people annoyed whole are subscribed and I guese on dailup.

new card, still can't get X11 working

2004-09-07 Thread Dustin
I originally sent this to the XFree86 list, but thought I may get some useful insight
if I sent it here.

I had a SIS 6326, and had problems getting X11 up and running, so went
to the store, and picked up an ATI Radeon 9200SE.

Then I rebuilt the system, here's the info:

ids# uname -a

FreeBSD ids.marsik.org 5.2.1-RELEASE FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE #0: Mon Feb
23 20:45:55 GMT 2004
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386

Immediately after install, I updated the ports tree using cvsup, then
updated the ports by running:

Portsdb -uU
Pkgdb -u
Portversion -v
Portupgrade -varRp -x openoffice
Portsclean -CDD

I then installed xorg from ports and configured xorg using both methods
specified by the handbook, which were:

The 'Xorg -configure' method
The xorgconfig method

When I run 'startx', the system hangs.

Is there a magical video card I can buy to alleviate these issues? I
need to get past this point and get to what I'm really trying to do.

Any help is much appreciated.

Post Install Configuration Issues (ruby18 error)

-attempted to install portupgrade from port and received following error:

This is an ongoing issue with portsdb/ruby.
The way I see it, there are some easy fixes out there

0. install portindex
1. cvsup (as you did)
2. run portindex - this takes a while the 1st time.
3. run portindexdb
4. pkgdb -afuF (or what ever parms you use)
5. portversion -vL= (this dumps out the ports that need updating)
6. portupgrade -a (or what ever parms you use.

Another way: - this changes the default database (btriev) to hash

setenv PORTS_DBDRIVER bdb1_hash

then run your portdb -u
In fact, I opted for this one. I now run my ports tree updating scripts
as I did BEFORE these issues.

Thanks, that worked. Guess I can login as root, mount, then log in as a
normal user.

Thanks!

RE: Access Windows share from FreeBSD (Cannot write)

I'm able to read from the smb share but I cannot write to it.
Permissions in XP are set up correctly, do you know why I wouldn't be
able to write to the directory?

Show us exactly how you patched and then restarted sshd.

Just create a typical partitioning scheme for a web server, and keep the
location of the logs and swap close to or at the outside of your disk.
Going from the outside of the disk inward, you would have: / (small), swap,
/www-jails, and so on. If you are going to have some heavy sites consider
two disks: one for system and web content files and the other for access
logs. You may want to look into turning off access time updates on your web
content and log files.

Yes. You need to enable process accounting using accton:

# accton /var/account/acct

Let the processes that you suspect are causing issues run for a bit. Next,
use sa to determine what the heck is going on. You can get a lot of detail
out of sa so make sure to read the manpage. You may also want to run bsdsar
(in ports) to watch for higher-level issues while using sa to get the real
detail.

/var/account/acct is going to grow pretty fast. Be sure to rotate it if you
plan on leaving process accounting enabled after your troubleshooting.

There's your problem. You should run mergemaster -p as step 2. The
-p means Pre-buildworld.
This was suggested on another list actually. Unfortunately, either you are
wrong or the FreeBSD docs are wrong. In /usr/src/Makefile the steps are
listed in the order I show above. Also, per the mergemaster manpage the -p
option is used to update the password database and recreate /etc/passwd.
Ultimately, I think that this is an issue with the kernel recognizing the
storage system, but I could be wrong! Please do correct me if I am.

Quick reminder for others: The 4.4-REL kernel is able to mount / fine, but
4.8-STABLE is not. This may either be a symptom of another problem, or the
immediate problem.

Is this off-topic for freebsd-stable?

There is a blurb near the top that mentions running pwd_mkdb with the -p
option to rebuild the master password file. I think this is what is
confusing you.
My manpage must be outdated or just wrong then:

# man mergemaster | grep -- -p
the -p option to rebuild your password databases and recreate
This is from a longer paragraph, and no mention is made of Pre-buildworld
mode. This may be indeed what is throwing me. There seems to also be an
error in /usr/src/Makefile since it states that:

# For individuals wanting to upgrade their sources (even if only a
# delta of a few days):
#
# 1. `cd /usr/src' (or to the directory containing your source tree).
# 2. `make buildworld'
# 3. `make buildkernel KERNCONF=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE' (default is GENERIC).
# 4. `make installkernel KERNCONF=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE' (default is GENERIC).
# 5. `reboot'(in single user mode: boot -s from the loader prompt).
# 6. `mergemaster -p'
# 7. `make installworld'
# 8. `mergemaster'
# 9. `reboot'
Notice that there is no mention of mergemaster until step 6.

This is a test system, but it's remote and I don't want to clobber it
unnecessarily.

Read the begining of that sentence. I'll bet it is talking about
pwd_mkdb(8) and not mergemaster.
Well crap. Still, my version doesn't mention anything about Pre-buildworld
mode so the pie on my face is at least tasty.

Since you have already updated your source tree, read
/usr/src/usr.sbin/mergemaster/mergemaster.8 That is the man page for
/usr/src/usr.sbin/mergemaster/mergemaster.sh That will explain
everything, including when to run it using the -p parameter. That
would be pre-buildworld.
Will do.

Notice that there is no mention of mergemaster until step 6.

The Makefile reads the same on my 4.8 system. However, that should
probably be updated, as every time I've seen a mention of mergemaster
-p on any of the mailing lists, it has always occured before the
buildworld. (And that's the advice I've been following since the -p
parameter was introduced.)
Yes, updating the docs would be very helpful in situations.. oh, I don't
know.. like this one.
