How to recover /usr and /home directory

2006-04-02 Thread Edwin D. Vinas
Hi,

I have a previous 40GB HDD which crashed during power outage and now no
longer repairable. Before I installed a new HDD, I can still see the
contents of that defective hard disk when booting from a single user mode.
Now, I set it up as slave and installed a new FreeBSD on the new master HDD.
But then, when I mounted the old hard disk, I can no longer see any content
in my /usr and /home directories. These directories are the ones with "hard
error reading" blocks which made FreeBSD not to continue booting due to
unending and irrepariable fsck commands on this filesystem. All my website
files and programs are on that old HDD especially in the /usr directory.
Does the new setup master/slave have somehow caused those files hidden? How
do I mount even the fragmented blocks? Any suggestion on how I can recover
my files? Why is FreeBSD so susceptible to fragmentations when suddenly
turned off or when there is a power outage?

This is what I don't like with FreeBSD; it does not care too much on data!
Even the fsck doesn't tell you that the hard disk is no longer usable as it
will still prompt you to do fsck over and over again. And now, my /usr and
/home suddenly disappeared when mounted. I can still see these two
directories last week but now it seems they're gone.

Thanks.
Edwin

hard error reading: set fstab mounts to frw: can no longer access filesystem

2006-03-20 Thread Edwin D. Vinas
Hi,

After a power outage my FreeBSD-4.10 server's 40GB HDD had many
fragmentations and no matter how I repeatedly do "fsck", the errors saying
"hard error reading fsbn" are still there. I tried doing fsck over and over
but it seems this is already a hardware error and can no longer be
corrected. So my goal now is to recover my files!

First, I did a "mount -a" and was able to copy some of important files but I
have more data which I need to backup which I thought would only be possible
if I can make the server boot and make it work at least with TCP/IP so I can
transfer data to the other PCs in the LAN. But, after "mount -a", I edited
the fstab to set mounts to "frw" to force mount all drives and not give me
those "hard error reading fsbn". So, I rebooted the machine, only to find
out that after it mounted all partitions the the "/usr/libexec/getty"
something can't be found or executed for ttys and its giving me unending
errors. And there it goes, I can no longer access my filesystem because it
hangs or doesn't have a terminal when the machine is about to finish
booting. There is no prompt anymore, all I can see are the getty errors. If
only I can edit fstab back without "f" option, I can still manually copy my
files to a USB.

Is there anyway to still recover my files? Is there a way I can edit fstab
to remove "f" option so I can't have those getty errors? Or is it possible
to mount the server's HDD in another FreeBSD machine?

Thanks.

FreeBSD/Apache/DNS- Problem accessing virtual hosts from external network

2005-12-18 Thread Edwin D. Vinas
Hi,

I am using DNS(Bind)/Apache(virtual hosting) in a FreeBSd machine which is
connected via a static IP in a DSL provider. I want to setup mulitple
websites under my domain. I have been able to get a domain from GoDaddy and
was able to setup so that it will point to my IP address when my domain is
accessed. I also have configured DNS and Apache virtual hosting.

 Questions:
1) Is it a problem of DNS, Apache virtual hosting or my domain name
provider?
2) Is anyone have tried to configure multiple virtual hosting in Apache with
DNS in one FreeBSD machine? Can you give me your sample config for DNS,
Apache, /etc/hosts/, /etc/resolv.conf etc etc that are related to this
setup?

---
Observations:
1) If the computer accessing the virtual domains is from the LAN, it works
fine. I can access
all the virtual domains (i.e., www.mydomain.com, vhost1.mydomain.com,
vhost2.mydomain.com, vhost3.mydomain.com)
2) But if the virtual domain was accessed from outside (Internet or at my
office), it doesn't work and all virtual domains
resolve to www.mydomain.com. All I can see is the main default page for
www.mydomain.com. For example, when I access www.mydomain.com, it works
fine. But when I access the virtual hosts
such as vhost1.mydomain.com, vhost2.mydomain.com, vhost3.mydomain.com; it
only display the main website www.mydomain.com.

Here are my configurations:

how to setup DNS server and making sub-domains in DSL server

2005-11-06 Thread Edwin D. Vinas
Hi,
 I need your help please.
On my personal FreeBSD server connected to an ISP with static IP address,
I'm planning to setup several websites with their own sub-domains from my
main domain as shown below. I just want to know some answers to my questions
before I start.
 Main domain: www.exampledomain.ph
Sub-domains:
sub1.exampledomain.ph
 sub2.exampledomain.ph
 sub3.exampledomain.ph
I want to use BIND together with my Apache virtual hosting in one single
FreeBSD machine.
 These are my questions:
1) Is it correct that I only need to register or pay for the main domain?
2) Is it correct that through my local DNS server, I can add sub hosts (sub1
to sub3) without anymore registering those sub domains and pay for them in
my main domain provider?
3) Provided that I already have successfully setup my local DNS server,
Apache virtual hosting and main domain activated, is it straightforward that
I can already access the sub domains (i.e., websites) from the Internet?
4) Do I need to register sub1, sub2 and sub3 in any external domain
provider?
5) Can you provide some sample configs if you are already doing this setup?
  Thank you in advance!

SNMP problem in FreeBSD-4.10 has been solved

2005-10-23 Thread Edwin D. Vinas
If you are having some problems with net-snmp in FreeBSD-4.10:
- Don't use latest net-snmp from sourceforge.
- Use the /usr/ports/net-mgmt/net-snmp4/ which is the original UCD-SNMP
package.
- Use also the mrtg package which comes with ports.
Now, I can already monitor my DSL link!

hello everyone!
i have a running dual-boot (FreeBSD and WinXP) before but when I got

added a new bootable WinXP. so now, when the machine boots, it doesnt load
the FreeBSD boot loader but instead two WinXP Professional is being shown.
How do I recover the FreeBSD boot loader? I can't see any F1, F2 or F3 which
allows me to choose which OS to boot. It seems the newly installed WinXP has
removed the FreeBSD boot manager? Pls help me :-(

Unending compilation of OpenOffice-1.1.2

hi,

Is it normal for OpenOffice-1.1.2 to take a very long compilation

hours to compile openoffice in FreeBSD-5.3 and until now it is still
compiling. I also tried installing the source but when I execute

the installtion/setup. Is there anyway to quickly install openoffice

Installing Wireless Optical Mouse in FreeBSD-5.3

2005-04-14 Thread Edwin D. Vinas
Hi!

Im having a problem on making a wireless optical mouse work with
FreeBSD-5.3. It was a "Wireless Optical 3D Mouse (A4Tech)". It works
fine with Windows XP. I re-configured my Xorg using "xorgconfig" and
has specified that the corrent mouse port is "/dev/ums0".

When I "startx", I got an error shown below:
-
Using log file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf
xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/ums0
 Device busy
Mouse1: cannot open input device
PreInit failed for input device "Mouse1"
No core pointer

Fatal server error:
failed to initialize core devices

* Observations:
- usbd_enble="YES" in rc.conf
- after reboot, i can see my mouse pointer when in a console screen
- "moused -p /dev/ums0" is running in background
- it seems FreeBSD-5.3 detects the mouse and moused shows it works

Why is it that I cant launch X and shows me that error? What do I need to do?

what application is needed to open a video streaming site

2005-04-10 Thread Edwin D. Vinas
Hi,

I like viewing the streaming videos in this site [

have to shift to FreeBSD-5.3 and I would still want to view these
educational streaming videos. I know mplayer, xmms, kaboodle, etc. which are
the multimedia players in FreeBSD/KDE environment. Can anyone point me to a
tutorial on how to open streaming videos using FreeBSD-5.3 and KDE-3.xdesktop?

I saw that the file extension is .wvx which is a Windows Media Audio/Video
shortcut. Is there an application in FreeBSD that can open such audio/video
format?

Also, if I need to view real player format of streaming video, what program
do I need to install in FreeBSD?

Thank you very much!

tcpdump question

2005-03-21 Thread Edwin D. Vinas
Hi everyone!

I've run a tcpdump on my FreeBSD-5.3 machine which is connected via
DSL connection (with fix IP add) passing through a DSL modem. I see
the following weird output, and Im wondering where does the

Another one, is there a GUI to visualize properly the output of
tcpdump? I mean a GUI which can be run as separate X Window
application whose job is to tabulate and display the output of tcpdump
in a human-readable form.

Thanks!

DSL LAN Sharing with FreeBSD-5.3+natd+ipfw

2005-03-16 Thread Edwin D. Vinas
hi,

how do i permanently set the rules for ipfw? whenever i restart my
FreeBSD server which has natd & firewall enabled, the ipfw returns to
default which is "65535 151 14646 deny ip from any to any". so i need
to repeat "ipfw -f flush" and execute the commands below so that my
LAN can access the Internet.

simple ruleset that must appear when "ipfw show" is executed:
00100 28 2096 divert 8668 ip from any to any via dc0
00200 37 3147 allow ip from any to any
65535 151 14646 deny ip from any to any

do u have an ideal ipfw rules that i can follow for a setup which
consists of a FreeBSD-5.3, natd, firewall, and DSL (static IP)
connection? i just need to as much as possible prevent my LAN from
attacks/virus/worms from outside world.

sharing a DSL connection using FreeBSD-5.3

2005-03-13 Thread Edwin D. Vinas
hello every one!

i have a freebsd machine which i want to use to share my DSL
connection to a LAN. basically, i have tested my FreeBSD-4.10 to
connect to my DSL provider which gave me a static IP address. using a
setup with one LAN card and correctly setup IP address & settings, I
was able to access the Internet painlessly. now, i bought a new LAN
card which I will connect to my LAN switch. the old LAN card will be
my interface to the WAN (DSL provider). i haven't done anything to
share the Internet coz I want to have an idea from you on what are the
next steps in confguring my FreeBSD to share Internet. i will first
upgrade my OS to FreeBSD-5.3 which is the latest stable version of
FreeBSD.

here's my ifconfig which shows that my newly installed card is
recognized together with my working LAN card which is currently
connected to my DSL internet provider.

%ifconfig
rl0: flags=8802 mtu 1500
ether 00:11:95:26:4e:58
media: Ethernet autoselect (10baseT/UTP)
status: no carrier
dc0: flags=8843 mtu 1500
inet 210.125.155.126 netmask 0xff00 broadcast 210.125.155.255
inet6 fe80::280:adff:fe00:572c%dc0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x2
ether 00:80:ad:00:57:2c
media: Ethernet autoselect (100baseTX )
status: active
lp0: flags=8810 mtu 1500
lo0: flags=8049 mtu 16384
inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128
inet6 fe80::1%lo0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x4
inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff00
ppp0: flags=8010 mtu 1500
sl0: flags=c010 mtu 552

according to some FreeBSD documentations, i need to configure my
machine as a gateway and use NAT. others also say about using a
firewall. im concerned on the ease of maintaining the FreeBSD as a DSL
router. im also concerned on filtered ports or port forwarding which
may block certain ports such as Yahoo messenger and online games. if i
use FreeBSD+NAT+firewall, would Windows clients that runs on specific
ports (i.e. YM and online games) still be able to work? before, i used
WinRoute and WinGate but there are instances when I can't get to work
certain applications due to the limitations of the gateway.

does anyone here can show me the steps I need to follow to be able to
setup a FreeBSD-based DSL internet sharing server which is easy to
maintain, fast and secured?

thank you very much!
-edwin

P.S.

I love FreeBSD!

Fwd: connecting a FreeBSD-4.10 to Internet using DSL with static ip address

2005-03-12 Thread Edwin D. Vinas
Hello everyone!

I have a FreeBSD-4.10 machine and a newly connected DSL with static ip
address. The DSL connection setup uses an ADSL modem (SMC7901BRA)
which has 1 connection to my phone line and 1 connection to my LAN
card using UTP cable. In Windows XP setup, the process of setting up
Internet is just as easy as configuring the TCP/IP prpoerties with the
static ip address given to me and other details such as gateway, dns,
subnet mask etc.

My machine has a dual-boot WinXP and FreeBSD-4.10. As I've said above,
I can easily connect to the Internet using the WinXP. But, I want to
try FreeBSD to connect to the Internet, but it doesn't work.

Here's what I did to test if I can connect to Internet via DSL using FreeBSD:
1. Reboot or boot to FreeBSD-4.10
2. Login as root
3. /stand/sysinstall to assign IP address, gateway, and dns
4. Reboot machine to make sure new IP settings take effect
5. Do an ifconfig and see that the IP settings are correct
6. I can ping my own IP address (static IP address of the DSL assigned
by my ISP)
7. When I try to ping the ISP's given gateway, I receive "ping to:
Host is down".
8. Seeing the modem status, the "LAN" and "SYNC" signals are up but
the "DATA" is off.

I have tried searching the net with FreeBSD+DSL but all I can read is
about "PPPoE" which requires a "username" and "password" which I don't
have. My DSL account is an "always on" account with a static IP
address and I guess it doesnt have a username/password for connection
to the ISP.

Does FreeBSD need to detect my DSL modem if it is connected to the NIC
using a UTP cable connected to the modem? Here's my setup:

[DSL modem]<->[DSL Provider] (provides static IP address)
|
|
|
[FreeBSD's LAN card]

Here's the modem's technical description:
https://secure.quicksolve.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=&products_id=2991
http://sg.hardwarezone.com/priceguide/info.php?cid=113&id=11104

Does anybody has an experience connecting FreeBSD to a DSL with a
static IP address and has similar setup above?

Actually my real purpose is to use FreeBSD as LAN gateway using the
DSL connection. But I wanna try first connecting the FreeBSD machine
as a stand-alone PC which uses the simple setup above. If this setup
works, the gateeway setup will surely work too.

Thank you very much!

Thanks Matthew for the reply. But, its sad to say that I can't find any
"openobex" ports in my machine.

banao# ls /usr/ports/comms/openobex
ls: /usr/ports/comms/openobex: No such file or directory

I thought of actually using this openobex port but do you know how to find the
ports if its not in the distribution? Im using FreeBSD-5.2 and KDE 3.0. Im
actually searching the web for it but some sites dont have a link to the
files to be downloaded. In case you know where to find the installer that
would really work for FreeBSD-5.2, please send the link to me.

Thanks again!

Can't file transfer via Bluetooth in FreeBSD

2004-08-01 Thread Edwin D. Vinas
Hi,

I recently shifted to FreeBSD-5.2 from Windows XP because I know there is a
bluetooh support in these new 5.x versions. I was so glad that FreeBSD have
improved a lot! However, I have a problem with installing or making the
bluetooth file transfer work. Here are the details below:

I followed the documentation by Pav on http://www.oook.cz/bsd/bluetooth.html.
I was able to pair my Nokia 3660 with my FreeBSD-5.2 which has an MSI
bluetooth dongle. I was able to discover other devices, and execute other
built-in commands such as hccontrol, l2ping, l2control, sdptool etc. But, I
noticed that the the basic file transfer called OBEX was not yet incorporated
in the FreeBSD-5.2 and that I have to install an openobex or something. I
have succesfully installed openobex from sourceforge, but it doesn't have the
"obexapp" command. The i tried installing the "obexapp" from sourceforge too.
The problem is that I cant install it.

tar -zxvf obexapp-1.2.tar.gz
(extracts two directories openobex-1.0.1/ and obexapp/)

cd openobex-1.0.1
./configure
/usr/local/bin/make
/usr/local/bin/make install

cd obexapp
(no ./configure and NO README!!!)
so i tried, "make" or "/usr/local/bin/make"
when i tried "make":
banao# make
Warning: Object directory not changed from original /usr/home/misoy/EDV/

Re: Network Problem on FreeBSD-4.8 : Cannot ping LAN hosts

2003-10-19 Thread Edwin D. Vinas
hi josh,

thanks for the advise. it's the "FIREWALL" thing that
don't allow my FreeBSD to access the Internet Sharing
in the Windows XP. Now, its ok already. I just
unchecked the option that "Restricts IP hosts from
Internet (external) to access the Internet Sharing
Machine" or something like that. Now its working. It
really is not a problem with my FreeBSD LAN card or
other configurations. It's the WindowsXP trick!

Internal sound card cannot be recognized

2003-09-21 Thread Edwin D. Vinas
When i turn on my FreeBSD machine, I often receive a
pop-up window saying there's a problem with my sound
card (internal sound card). It says that it couldn't
open or find /dev/dsp0 or something similar. Is there
a way to slve this?

Network Problem on FreeBSD-4.8 : Cannot ping LAN hosts

2003-09-18 Thread Edwin D. Vinas
Hi,

I've stumbling with all the mailing lists about this problem and I hope somebody will
give a kind advise. Here's my LAN setup:

|   |  ||  |
WinXP1 WinXP2 WinXP3 WinXP4 FreeBSD

WinXP3 is my Internet Sharing Machine connected to my ISP.
I can browse the web using all the WinXPs but I cannot access the web via FreeBSD.
FreeBSD's IP address follows the 192.198.0.x format just like the other WinXPs.
When I check the FreeBSD, i can see its IP address and Subnet Mask etc via "ifconfig".
I can even change the IP address+ Gateway (which is WinXP2's IP add) using
ifconfig or /stand/sysinstall. I even manually edited rc.conf, and even changed the
setting to DHCP etc etc etc.

My diagnosis tells that I cannot ping any WinXP machine in the LAN. But I can ping
myself (FreeBSD) locally. When I run "netstat -rn", It seems the network card is ok.
When I run "tcpdump", I didn't show any output. By the way, this network card is CNet
PRO200. I was thinking it was not recognize or supported by the FreeBSD-4.8. When I
checked "FreeBSD-4.8's Hardware Compatibility Lit", I didn't see any "CNet PRO200" but
I saw a "CNet/PRO" which I suppose are just the same. So, I recompiled my Kernel again
just in case FreeBSD didn't recognize this newly installed Cnet LAN card. But, nothing
changed after Kernel recompilation. (But I did not change any option in the Generic
kernel; just re-compiled it).

The output when I ping WinXP3: "ping: sendto: Host is down".
It's not true coz Im typing this email right in the WinXP3 machine. I cannot also ping
FreeBSD's IP add from the WinXP internet sharing server. The dmesg shows the
following: pci0 (vendor=0x1106 dev=0x3059) at 17.5 irq 5.

By the way, this machine where FreeBSD is installed also has WinXP which works fine
when in Windows. So Im sure my LAN card is really ok. It's only a problem of FreeBSD.

What should I do? I don't want to make FreeBSD machine as my Internet sharing server
as of now (although its the best option). Im testing/running a Unix program that needs
to be connected to the Internet via Windows XP gateway.

Please help me make my FreeBSD be part of my LAN

-Edwin
