Re: Using 'incorrect' HD geometry.

2006-03-16 Thread Lila

Hi,
I'm using win2k an freebsd 6.0 on my laptop too, and I've been
reinstalling freebsd pretty often (I'm still tring my way to have it
working, so I started with 5.4 and than moved to 4.11 and 6.0) without
ever changing my win partition.
As you say, I'm always prompted about incorrect geometry, I hit ok and
go on, than fdisk show me something like the one you got, with ad0s1 as
my win (NTFS) partition and ad0s2 as my freebsd partition. All I do at
this rate is to set my ad0s1 to be my active partition (I boot both from
the win 2000 booter) than I go ahead leaving the MBR as is and install
freebsd in freebsd partition. Unfortunately I've never been able to keep
the /usr label as is (I always delete them all and start from a auto
layout), and I can't help you if you're willing to keep their data safe.

I got this article as model when I first did it:
http://taosecurity.blogspot.com/2004/10/dual-boot-freebsd-5.html
My windows partition was out of order only once, when I forgot to set it
bootable, but this is because I actually boot both OS from it: I went
back to fdisk, fixed it and got my windows working with no problem.
I can't tell you to go ahed with no backup... but I can say your win
partition is pretty safe with freebsd fdisk.

Regards
Lila

If I just immediately 'Q'uit the darned thing will it not make any
changes to global drive geometry? It would probably take me several
days to get my win2k installation back to how it is now, if I lost it.

All I really want is for the installer to use the freebsd slice as is.

I'm tempted to just try UPGRADING but mergemaster always confuses me.

Re: downloading version 6 freebsd

2006-03-16 Thread Lila

I don't know what the problem may be:
I got my iso from bittorent and it was fast, so if you can use bt you
can get the torrents here

ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/torrents/6.0-RELEASE

snd_neomagic crashes on FreeBSD 5.4

2006-02-28 Thread Lila
Hello!
sorry for troubling you, I'm and absolute FreeBSD beginner and I need some
help with configuring devices.
Last week I tried to install FreeBSD on my laptop, a Omnibook 900, wich has
been consdered FreeBSD Compatible long time ago.
Everything was fine, at least I can access my FreeBSD login and even run
KDE, but it is far from being tuned.
I first notice each time I try to kldload snd_neomagic to have my sound card
working I have a prompt saying:

pcm0: NeoMagic 256AV mem 0xfe70-0xfe7f,0xfe0-0xfe3f irq 10
at device 0.1 on pci1

and system frozes. The same happens if i try to statically compile
snd_nemagic into kernel.

I started checking all IRQ and settings: I know audio must use IRQ 5 for
multimedia devices, and IRQ 10 shared with cardbus and USB, for audio, I
tried to add lines on device.hints but having pcm0 on pci1 is useless.
vmstat -i says cbb0 and cbb1 are on irq 10, but says nothing about usb (wich
works properly) or pcm

I also noticed my serial port (sio0) is not probed.
Any suggestion? should I try anything to debug it better?
Thanks a lot
Lila

about ports reinstall

2004-10-01 Thread Lila
Hi,
The php4 ports that I installed did not work with mysql,
it seems like it never able to configure to work with mysql.
No mysql info can be found with phpinfo().
I tried to reinstall php4 many times but no luck for me.
I want to ask is there a way to completely remove the
installed ports and related deps so that I can do a very
clean install of php4 and maybe with apache and mysql.
Thanks!
