FreeMat 3.0 doesn't call functions and help
I've just installed FreeMat 3.0 from the ports in my i386 6.2 box but, while it is able to accomplish simple calculations it is not able to use the functions e.g to invert a matrix a=[1,2;-4,3] inv(a) instead of inverting the matrix hangs endlessly. Besides if I ask for the "help on line" (OR helpwin) the following error messages pops up "The file modules.txt is missing from the directory where I think help files should be." I think I didn't configure something but I don't know what (the main.pdf manual isn't that helpful as far as the installation is concerned). Could someone out there help me to start FreeMat? Mark, after some other trial I decided in the end to concentrate on an application, R, trying to extract the best out of it in term of performance. That's why I deinstalled both in gentoo and in freebsd R, downloaded the 2.0.1 source tarball from the r-project , compiled it in both OSs with the same configuration and options. Now it happens that one test program working only in memory is executed in almost the same time in linux and in freebsd (a bit longer under win xp). Another R test program working mainly in memory but producing a lot of output on the screen of the text console, works happily and fast in linux bash console whilst in freebsd csh console I see the R program to start happily and the output flowing rapidly on the screen, after some time it starts slowing down, then clogging. In the end it takes twice as much time to complete with respect to gentoo! Could the difference be the bash in linux and csh in freebsd shell? Suggestions? Tuning FreBSD with specific applications
First of all: I DO NOT WANT TO START A FLAME! On my laptop I've being using linux for some years now and "landed" at last to the gentoo distribution which I tuned for working with the statistical software R and the bunch of TeX programs such as latex, pdflatex, context and the likes (this absorb 95% of my activity on the linux box). The main action I took with gentoo was to compile everything from scratch for my pc hardware, limiting the use of X & kde using all the above mentioned software prevailingly in a simple console. Now in a partition of the same laptop I installed freebsd 5.4, set softupdates, dma=1, and the same pieces of software as those I had installed under linux using the ports, therefore, compiling everything for my pc hardware, but, owing to my poor knowledge of Freebsd I'm experiencing some problems. In a nutshell I prepared the following test files: 1) a ConTeXt file full of long (useless) chapters and pictures to run with texexec; 2) An R program which reads a long text file, puts the data in dataframes, then loops to accomplish many repetitive mathematical calculations. Now running the test files in a console linux turns out to be roughly 20-25% faster than freebsd. Particulary slow results the loop phase of the R source code that while running slows down and seems to clog in the end. The slowing down is also perceptible under linux but not at the same level. Admiring the "ordered and unitary layout" of freebsd, the logical way of setting it up, the richness of applications, I would like to line the freebsd installation up to the linux one, improving its performance at most, not necessarily making it faster than linux. How could I obtain those improvements? What could I do to speed those programs under freebsd? Cups samba printing very slow!
At last I have been able to set up cups under kde 3.4 to print from my laptop with freebsd 5.4 to an epson stylus color 640 printer connected to another pc seen by cups in the laptop both as an ipp printer under freebsd 5.4 (seen from the laptop as the cups server) AND - more frequently - as an smb printer under windows XP. The network connection from the laptop on which run both samba and cupsd and the pc is made by means of a wireless 11Mb card and an access point. While printing to the windows XP pc through samba by means of lpr -Psmbepson file is pretty fast and immediate, printing from an application like kword, konqueror which format the text takes at least 1.5-2 minutes to start, against few seconds with a direct parallel port connection and about a bearable 30-45 secs with an ipp printer connection to the freebsd box. Are those differences acceptable ot there's something to be improved? in case of a no, what should I check? kde, cups and the print server
Context:FreeBSD 5.4, kde 3.4 cups + gimp print Using the kde control center to select printers I'm experiencing the following, after selecting the cups printing system. 1) As administrator I can see that "Server:localhost:631" is selected and I'm able to select printers and print the test page. 2) whilst as the ordinary "victor" user the kde printer configuration shows I'm connected to "Server:192.168.1.5:631" which was a former IP address of a cupsd server + printer in my lan which I used to use but does not exist any longer. I modified the /usr/local/etc/cups/clients.conf changing "NameServer 192.168.1.5" into "NameServer 127.0.0.1" to no avail. And I'm completely unable to select printers and print anything. kde & kdm & mouse - AGAIN
I have the latest installation of freebsd 5.4 on my laptop, kde & kdm 3.4. The laptop has a synaptic mousepad endowed of two buttons that in normal conditions are not used at all being enough to double-hit on the pad to have the same effect as that of pressing the left button. Now at boot time I enabled moused # ps ax|grep moused 493 ?? Ss 0:00.54 /usr/sbin/moused -p /dev/psm0 -t auto And the following in /etc/X11/xorg.conf Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "Auto" Option "Device" "/dev/sysmouse" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection . Now it happens that: 1) If I start kde as a user by means of the command startx (having put startkde into .xinitrc) the mouse(-pad) works as expected: I can move around the screen and select and launch programs just moving on the pad and double hitting the pad . No problems! In a nutshell no need to press the left button. 2) If at boot time I start kde by means of kdm having put in /etc/ttys: ttyv8 "/usr/local/bin/kdm -nodaemon" xterm on secure and modified /etc/pam.d as required to autologin, I immediatedly and automagically login into kde as a user and the mouse works BUT... with the pad I can only move around the screen and the double-hit doesn't work anymore so that I have to use the left button cumpulsorily (and annoyingly). My feeling is that moused is both somewhat slow and one of the last services to be executed. Therefore I highly suspect that the execution of moused in some way overlaps with the execution of autologin kdm at boot time causing the malfunctioning mousepad behaviour. Now I'm trying to delay a bit the execution of kdm by adding something like ttyv8 "/bin/sleep 2;/usr/local/bin/kdm -nodaemon" xterm on secure ttyv8 "/bin/sleep 2 && /usr/local/bin/kdm -nodaemon" xterm on secure but FreeBSD doesn't seem to like either: it doesn't execute kdm and issue a warning about a delay of 60 seconds?? How could I delay a bit the autologin kdm? Why in your opinion is that crazy behavior and what should I do? Xu, use the following in /etc/make.conf FETCH_ENV = HTTP_PROXY=http://user:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:80 FETCH_ENV = HTTP_PROXY=http://user:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:80 It works for me.
