I bought a PCI card with a ralink chipset for about $20 from newegg.
It was recognized automatically during freebsd 6.1 install.

Foxconn WLL-3350. So far it's been working very well although I

any way i can boot from a floppy and continue to load the system from the

Re: Age of Empires on FreeBSD --- Possible?

Wll, maybe if development on wine for FBSD would have stopped things would
have been different. In my office we have linux and FreeBSD workstations.
I run FreeBSD but my friends have linux. Because of that they can play
about anything using winex (Broodwar, Counterstrike, Rise of Nations etc)
and i cant join because wine on FreeBSD doesnt work too well.

Well, this probably isn't the answer you wanted to hear, but personally I
still keep a Windows partition for this explicit reason (games and sound
production). There are some games which run fine on some sort of emulator,
but I'd rather not have to deal with a whole bunch of extra stuff to do
something I can achieve more easily and with better results by using the
intended OS. I don't like Windows, but some of the best games will only run
on it. It's sort of a pain to reboot just to play Medieval: Total War, for
instance, but once the game is over I can reboot into fbsd and have my
workstation back, which I sort of like better than having a one-size-fits-all
setup. In fact, I'll probably end up building a separate box with a Win
installation just for gaming and sound, so I can concentrate on the hardware
that will work best for a workstation and some servers using FreeBSD.

I tend to agree with this view - i.e. use the right tool for the right job.

Symbios scsi and too large ata

2004-10-01 Thread Radu MOLNAR
Hello
I a computer wich has a Symbios scsi controller and a 40G ata drive.
Because the computer's bios is too old it does notdetect the 40G drive.
So i tried to install FreeBSD on this box and failed miserably. 5.3BETA5
would freeze on boot. Only prints 2 lines or so.

Then i tried 4.10. This one booted but doesnt see my scsi drive, only the
ata one, on which ofcourse there is no point on instaling the system
because it wont boot.

I read some documentation and saw that Symbios scsi controllers are
supported in both 4.10 and 5.2.1 so i realy dont understand what the
problem is.

In scsi bios utility it sais that the device uses irq 9. When doing kernel
configuration on CLI mode i saw there is a device sio3 that uses the irq 9
but it is not enabled.

I also booted OpenBSD on this box and it detected my scsi drive as sd0.
But would really prefer running FreeBSD to Open so if you have any ideas
pls tell me.

And if it is not possible to install the system on the scsi drive maybe
some suggestions on how to boot the sistem from the ata drive which doesnt
boot(some floppies or smth like that)

thanks

instalation problem (urgent)

2004-09-21 Thread Radu MOLNAR
I have a problem with FreeBSD instalation. I tried 5.3BETA5 5.2.1 and 4.9
all with the same result.
When sysinstall starts i choose custom and proceed to creating the slice
and partitions(only one slice and one partion plus swap). I tried two
ways.
I go to Partition, create the slice on the entire hard drive press q
and choose BootMgr.
Then i go to label and create my partion and swap.
(in both these steps i dont write changes)
I choose my distributions and them commit.
When i press commit the computer instantly reboots without anything beeing
done. After restart i see the slice and partitions but i cant install as
get errors.

The second way is to write changes when i make the slice and partitions.
When making the slice there are no problems. I create it press w and get
the message Wrote FDISK partition information out succesfully.
Then i go to label and create the partion and swap.
When i press w i get the message WARNING! Unable to swap to
/dev/ad0s1b: Device not configured. This may couse the instalation to fail
at some point if you dont have a lot of memory and then Unable to make
new root filesystem on /dev/ad0s1a! Command returned status 1

The computer is a AMD k6-2/350 Mhz, the hard drive is a Fujitsu
mpb3021atu (2G), 64M RAM

Any ideas?

Re: Anjuta and libtools problem

This problem may be related to the problem reported in this
post:
http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/htdig/freebsd-questions/2004-June/049088.html
When trying to Autogen a new project, the configure script bails with the
message:
...
./ltconfig: Can't open ./ltconfig: No such file or directory
configure: error: libtool configure failed
I then created an empty ./ltconfig file inside the Project directory.
This fixed the Autogen process, but the build is nevertheless broken.
When I build a wizard generated test project, I get the following message:
../libtool: Can't open ../libtool: No such file or directory
I do believe him that there is no ../libtool. So I tried to change
./ltconfig to contain a line emitting where I have libtool installed, like
so
#!/bin/sh
echo /usr/local/bin
and another version
#!/bin/sh
echo /usr/local/bin/libtool15
however, to no avail. I also tried symlinking libtool to different
versions
like libtool13 and libtool15, and also copying a libtool executable to ../
relative to the project directory, nothing works.

Now I am clueless. Has anyone running Anjuta-1.2.2 on FreeBSD?
Might be worth noting that I run xFce, not the complete Gnome package.
-chris
Greetings!
I'm the one that posted the original inquiry regarding my libtool problems,
and I think you're experiencing a different kind of problem. It seems to me
that your Anjuta does not properly create your project. Why this is, I do not
know. Did you install Anjuta from ports, or did you download the sources off
of its website? If the latter is true, it may be that whatever generates the
scripts (or maybe even the scripts themselves) have hardcoded linuxisms in
them.

After creating a fresh project (any error messages notwithstanding), what's
in the project directory? Could you give an ls of it? And where do you place
your project directories? ~/Projects is the default, if I recall correctly.
I'm thinking that since the files obviously aren't created it might be a
permission problem. Just exhausting the possibilities here. :-)

I did find the solution to my initial problem, by the way. I posted a
follow-up in reply to myself, but I guess you've already read that.

I also have the same problem that you say you found the solution to but i
dont know how to pass the cpu-manufacturer-os-kernel argument to the
configure script. I get the error that you mentioned in your script when i
try to create a project. So at that stage how come there exists a
configure script? And also you said autogen.sh creates the configure
script. Isn't that file (autogen.sh) also created only then, when i create
the project? I dont know much (about anything) about the auto* stuff so
that's why my questions could be really stupid. I would also want to
configure everything from the gui if possible to make it as painless as
possible if you know how.

Thanks

I believe that this is where the opensource comunity in general looses to

The only reason i still install windows on my desktop is to
play games. I would gladly give up the microsoft products and most of my

You may say that games are not important but i must disagree. How can one
claim to make an OS for workstations if you can not play games in that OS.
Games are the peak of multimedia aplications. Just take a look at the
slashdot.org site and you will see that every day the GAMES section has
the most new news.

If we want an alternative to windows (we wants it) than maybe we should
concentrate our energies on making a desktop. But these are just the

wine

2004-05-12 Thread Radu MOLNAR
Hello list,
I have been trying to play some games using wine: Counterstrike, Broodwar
and Zap (www.opentnl.org) but i've been having some problems.
I cant run them in full screen is the first. I think this is because i
dont have de XFree86 DGA extension. I am pretty puzzled that i found
almost nothing when searching info on the DGA extension as i have the
impresion that it's important for aplications to be able to use the entire
screen. I use freebsd as a workstation so security is not sole concern. I
looked in the XFree86 port Makefile but i did not find any way to compile
the DGA extension in my X server.

The second problem that i had is more wine related. In all of the 3 games
i mentioned i was unable to connect to any network games or host any games
that other could see. I posted these problems on the wine mailing list too
but it seems that not many freebsd people use wine or play games. This is
odd as from what i heard freebsd's power is in it's speed, something that
i noticed for my self by using it for desktop aplications.

speed issues

2004-04-19 Thread Radu MOLNAR
Sorry about the repost:

Hello list
I have a freebsd 4.9 on my computer wich is conected to a 100Mbps network.
When downloading or uploading files from this freebsd using ftp a have
decent transfer rates (above 5 MB/s). But in this network we also use DC
for file sharing. And using the DC protocol i only get rates below 1MB/s
for upload or download.
I also get these messages in my first console:
Limiting icmp unreach response from 268 to 200 packets per second
Limiting icmp unreach response from 277 to 200 packets per second
Limiting icmp unreach response from 268 to 200 packets per second

Limiting icmp unreach response from 270 to 200 packets per second
Limiting icmp unreach response from 260 to 200 packets per second
Limiting icmp unreach response from 264 to 200 packets per second
Limiting icmp unreach response from 265 to 200 packets per second
Limiting icmp unreach response from 267 to 200 packets per second

Limiting icmp unreach response from 208 to 200 packets per second
Limiting icmp unreach response from 209 to 200 packets per second
Limiting icmp unreach response from 204 to 200 packets per second

i tried modifing the value of the sysctl variable net.inet.icmp.icmplim
from 200 to 1000 but it had no efect. Do I have to restart for changes to
take efect. Or what is the solution to my problem?
Thanks

Sorry if i wasn't correct in what i said. i was referring to the protocol
that DC clients use to transfer files. didn't know what else to call it :)

I'm not sure what the DC filesharing procotol is; I've never heard of
it, and I suspect not many other people have either.

I also get these messages in my first console:

These tend to be a result of a port scan. (It's conceivable your DC
protocol is trying to connect to a closed port initially and then
falling back to some other port which works...?)

I believe the error message is wrong on FreeBSD, and it should not be
there if you use the FreeBSD port.

I believe the error message is wrong on FreeBSD, and it should not be
there if you use the FreeBSD port.

You didn't ls -ld /var/mail; mode 1777 should not be needed on
FreeBSD, but perhaps you have incorrect permissions still. Or, the
pine port could just be wrong (maybe I'm mis-remembering that the
warning was removed, or maybe it came back).

 Kris

mode for /var/mail was 1775. i changed it to 1777 and i dont get the
message anymore. isn't 1777 a security risk?

 Hello,

I have the same card, you can find drivers for it in the
 /usr/ports/x11/nvidia-driver directory.

Note that i had to copy the nvidia.ko file from that directory to
/boot/kernel myself. Perhaps i did something wrong, but when copied
 manually and added to /boot/loader.conf

(nvidia_load=YES) it works like a sunshine.

Oh and could you do a little favor for me in return, wrap your lines at
 80 chars or something. Thanks

 Cheers

p.s little sidenote, FreeBSD works fine without the drivers, even VESA
mode under X works. But when working dualscreen and for getting it all
out of your card, it's better to use the driver.

  Thanks

  Zdzislaws

newbie questions

2004-04-09 Thread Radu MOLNAR
I hope this is the right place to post this.Sorry if it isn't

Just some stupid newbie questions:
1) I have an alias made in my .profile alias vi='/usr/local/bin/vim' but
the alias is not made when i log in X. If a log in console or using ssh
from a remote host the alias is made but when i log in x it is not.
Anybody know why? As shell i use bash.

2)In /etc/syslogd.conf i have comented the line
#*.err;kern.debug;auth.notice;mail.crit /dev/console
so that i wouldn't get any logs on my first console. But there are some
logs that get printed on the first console. They're printed in bright
white :) and they appear for example when someone tries to scan for opened
ports on my computer. My question is who makes these logs?

3)Why does pine say:
[Folder vulnerable - directory /var/mail must have 1777 protection]
these are the rights on /var/mail/taipan where taipan is my user:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] mail]# ls -l /var/mail/taipan
-rw--- 1 taipan wheel 11089 Apr 9 11:08 /var/mail/taipan

and alsoe the rights on /var/mail:
drwxrwxr-x 2 rootmail 512 Apr 9 11:07 mail

That's about it for now.
Happy Easter to everybody!

Install Problems

2003-09-18 Thread radu
My actual computer, an AMD Duron is actually split on three OS:
Windows XP, Mandrake Linux, Slackware Linux
I want to check the FREE BSD 5.1 on it but, before, I tested it on my old PC
-
That is a Pentium based P133, 16 Mo memory, 3 G dd, Windows 95
I firstly gave all the disk to BSD and starting the install.
You mention that you need at least 5 Mo for install and 4 Mo to work.
It could be in theory. With my 16 Mo after some 17 hours I gave up.
The font75DPI package is one that never lasts.
So I decided to make a compatibilty test with Windows 95.
I made a new partitioning, some 800 Mo for Win95, the rest for BSD.I
installed Win95
I choosed a minimum install, I was trapped choosing Linux
applications, quite long, ending with an error.
I re-started, avoiding Linux appli. Install operated in a reasonable
short time.
--
But, my actual problem is:

After install and rebooting I could'nt access BSD neither Windows.
I tried, after reinstalling Win, all the modes of booting.
MBR, does'nt work in neither OS
No change of boot area: freeze all systems, a message displayed : error
in intializing OS.
The best results: SBR. It displays on booting F1 Dos, F2 BSD
But function keys F1 and F2 are simply screaming and do'nt have any
effect. Frozen.
I'm working with an AZERTY keyboard.
That's my real problem, the long install pb is obviously due to memory size.
And second question: Why Install does'nt make an emergency diskette boot
facility ?
You have BSD installed, no way to make it work because a BSD problem.
Thanks for your attention and eventual solution ( I am a beginner in BSD
pbs )
