Regarding your problem: I have the same problem on my notebook - my solution is dirty but I was not able find a better one: (or better - not any other at all) - Install FreeBSD, remove the disk from your computer, put it in an external case and run fdisk (e.g. linux fdisk - i used fdisk from the parted magic boot cd for that) Mark the correct partition as active (even if it's already marked as such - remove the flag, write it, set it back and again write) - put it back into your notebook - now everything should work fine - don't ever press any of the F keys during the boot (it usually prompts for it) - it would result in the same problem as before - if you want to install eg windows now would be the time (if so - use the windows boot manager to boot freebsd - do NOT use the freebsd boot manager (the F1, F2, ... thing) ) [ http://bastian.rieck.ru/howtos/windows_boot_manager/ ] To be honest - I haven't tried booting FreeBSD after that fix without Windows - so no promises there - it might happen that it boots eg only once... An alternative solution would be to install FreeBSD using GPT instead of MBR (works if you a.) don't care about windows, or b.) have UEFI BIOS to install Windows on a GPT disk) Armin ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

That command is suboptimal to put it kindly. First, it's not necessary to wipe the entire drive, simply destroying the first couple sectors will be sufficent for the cause. Second, in the rare case you do need to wipe the entire thing, don't use bs=1k unless you really enjoy sitting around waiting. Use either of the following if you really must: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ad0 bs=1k count=1 dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ad0 bs=512k but you can call me uncle Eddie if that somehow helps. I'm not sure how you think a bad burn would cause POST to fail. Re: New FreeBSD User | HP Doesn't Boot
Are you able to boot from the usb you used to install? If yes, then my first instinct would be to scrub the disk and start over. Hopefully what ever is going on is just a freak anomaly. If you can boot the from the usb stick, go to the fixit shell and run dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ad0 bs=1k That will fill the disk with zeros, erasing _everything_. First, here's the relevant section in the handbook: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/config-network-setup.html Now, for network connectivity to work properly, you need three things: The interface must have an IP assigned to it, you need routing information (usually that means that you need to set a default route yourself, routing for your subnet is configured automatically when you set an IP), and last you'll probably want to have a DNS server set. If you are using DHCP, you need this entry in /etc/rc.conf: ifconfig_rl0="DHCP" and everything should work. If you don't have DHCP, or you wish to check the settings you got through DHCP, do this: * You can see your current IP by typing "ifconfig". You can assign a new IP with "ifconfig rl0 1.2.3.4". You can automatically assign an IP on startup by adding the following line to your /etc/rc.conf: ifconfig_rl0="inet 1.2.3.4 netmask 0xff00" * You can see the current default route (also referred to as default gateway) by typing "netstat -rn". The line starting with "default" (or 0.0.0.0 on Non-FreeBSD systems) is your default route. If you don't have one, you can set one with "route add default 1.2.3.4". The IP you specify there should be the IP of your firewall or router. To make this setting apply on startup, add this line to your /etc/rc.conf: defaultrouter="1.2.3.4" Again, the IP there is your router's IP. * You can see the currently set DNS server by looking at /etc/resolv.conf. You can add DNS servers my modifying that file. A correct entry looks like this: nameserver 4.2.2.4 If these settings are all correct, and you still don't have connectivity, the cause is one of the following: * Your networking card is broken. Your Realtek card is of extremely low quality, and they break frequently in unexpected ways. I know, I've had it happen to me too. * You have a firewall active on your FreeBSD system. FreeBSD ships with three different firewalls. The simplest thing is to disable them for now. PF you can disable with the "pfctl -d" command. IPFW you can disable with "ipfw disable firewall". And last, ipf you can disable with "ipf -D". * Your IP settings are simply incorrect, but you don't recognize that. If you still haven't solved the problem by now, post some more details, like the output of the "ifconfig" and "netstat -rn" commands as well as the general layout of your LAN. Hope this helps! Where to rent a FreeBSD user account?
Hello! I'm sick and tired of moving config files between a multitude of hosts just in order to find a nice environment and edit them, I feel like I need a place to "stay". I've decided to rent a virtual freebsd server next year, but in the meantime, I need just a user account. Required: - freebsd 5.4+ - large selection of preinstalled ports - 300Mb+ disk space - 2Gb+ monthly traffic - ftp access - stable as in rock-solid - backed up regularly - uptime very close to 100% - under $15/month Preferably: - nfs access - located in Europe I've googled for a few minutes, but all I've found is some free ("as is") accounts and http-hosting. Maybe some of you guys know (or own?) a decent company that offers such a service? FreeBSD User questions Mailing List
Hey there BSD people, I'm an IT student from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and a newbie to FreeBSD/Unix environment. Swear I've havn't typed on any unix prompt before! I've read a lot of positive-side article about your operating system and have tried it on myself. I've downloaded and installed FreeBSD 4.9 stable and installed it on my AMD Athlon 1.2 ghz unit. Installation was a daunting task at first specially embedding my built-in sound card into the kernel and configuring the XFree86 server for my KDE but with enough patience and maximum tolerance, I have now a fully running FreeBSD on my desktop. Anyway, I just wanted you to know how eager I am learning your wonderful software. I have a lot of questions, all of which are rapidly buffering inside "my kernel" which at times I always panic so please include me in your mailing list. -Thanks - Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Re: New freebsd user here
Just a quick check. Make sure you do a #include and using namespace std; symbols like cout and endl are in the std namespace, so if you don't have the above statement, you have to say something like std::cout << "hello world" << std::endl; -Ken On Mon, 19 Jan 2004 09:50:02 -0500 Bill Moran <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > [redirected to questions@, which is more appropriate for this kind of > question] > > Hugh Krogh-Freeman wrote: > > Hello everyone. If you use KDE or Gnome as a window manager, they provide "shutdown" buttons. Also, by default, CTL+ALT+DELETE is mapped to a controlled (safe) shutdown (meaning it properly halts the OS before rebooting) If neither of those methods are acceptable, you will have to be root, or someone with sudo rights to shutdown (if you've installed sudo). Thanks a million Just reinstall the one you want. If it's Windows, you'll need to reinstall the FreeBSD boot manager after you've reinstalled Windows (because Windows rebuilds your boot loader to its liking, without asking you). Just make sure you use the correct partitions, etc. I would definately back up everything before reinstalling either OS. -- Bill Moran Potential Technologies http://www.potentialtech.com ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

User accounts are only given to FreeBSD developers and rarely to non-developers who need to access a FreeBSD machine for a very specific purpose. The project has limited resources, and they're probably best spent in support of writing code and documentation, rather than giving away free mail hosting services. ;) Reference to this policy can be found here: http://www.freebsd.org/internal/machines.html Regards, -- Benjamin Krueger "Everyone has wings, some folks just don't know what they're for" - B.
