The problem is that the Boot DVD or Recovery Partition does not have an iSCSI initiator. In fact, the Mac does not ship with an iSCSI initiator, and the common solution to obtaining one is to install the free globalSAN iSCSI Initiator for OS X. Without an installed iSCSI initiator, you won't be able to mount the LUNs upon which is located the Time Machine volume from which you are trying to restore files. I read you can create a boot dvd from one of the files in the upgrade. I will play with iscsi and report anything significant. Just a word of caution - I read somewhere that using iSCSI for Time Machine means that you cannot use TM during an OS reinstall to restore your files from the Time Machine archive as iSCSI isn't available at that point. It seems you have to use a locally attached disk or AFP for the support to be there during reinstall. Not sure if thats still the case in Lion or not, I would tend to suspect they still don't consider iSCSI a top tier transport. How much duct > tape and baling wire are needed to make it work?! After having had odd behavior from TM on a netatalk volume, I've switched over to istgt and the globalSAN iSCSI initiator, using a ZVOL. I found the istgt configuration non-obvious, but I also have little background in iSCSI. Took me about an hour to get it up and running without authentication; haven't bothered since trying to get authentication to work. A friend of mine posted this on twitter this morning. http://www.alexanderwilde.com/2011/04/os-x-lion-connection-error-with-afp-and-workaround/ Apparently some hash algorithm or something like that is disabled in Lion, but not in a lot of NAS's. Quite some time agao I did spent a lot of time playing around with the initiator. My expereinces were that it works very nicely when connectivity works, but that a permanent loss of the far end oif the connection doesn't lead to a nice failure ... but then nether does ripping a SCSI drive off a bus, so I am not too fusssed about that in general! Re-establishing the connection fixes the problem. I got less good results layering other things (gmirror + zfs) on top of it though, but again it was the failire behaviour which lead me not to use it in the end, rather than the normal fucntionality, which works very well. -pete. ___ freebsd-stable@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-stable To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-stable-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"
