That is correct, and to answer the above question, NetBSD also uses 8 partitions per slice with the c partition being reserved. As far as I can tell one of the primary reasons for sticking with this scheme is that some platforms have firmware which look for information in 4.2BSD style partition schemes. Brandon D. As I wrote to Gregory, the "AFAIK" part isn't true. You *can* create and use partitions in the "extended partition". Right now, My /usr is 17.7GB, and /export is 16.7GB. AFAIK FreeBSD cannot use the so-called "extended partitions" (i.e. slices-within-slices).
