[Freedos-devel] re: (OT) New mail worm = update your antivirus!!!

2004-03-03 Thread Eric Auer

Hi Jim, well, Bagle, maybe!
But our mail gateway has held back DOZENS of Netsky copies to me this week
already. Because all those viruses use fake sender addresses it is virtually
impossible to guess (from the IP) who is the actually infected person.
If one - maybe even past - list member is infected, people who have posted
to the list and are therefore known to that list member will get virus mail
from each other (in reality from the one list member of course, but the
fake sender addresses...).

The only thing which helps is making everybody update their antivirus software.
I think http://www.bitdefender.com/ and http://www.free-av.com/ are free for
private use.

Eric.

Heh, how bad do you want it? Ventura Pacific lists one for $165 and Abe Books has it
for $175 via online purchase -- plus whatever shipping to get it overseas, of course.
Totally outrageous, but I guess they know it's hard to get. Makes me wonder what I
could get for my old MS-DOS Encyclopedia and the copy of Extending DOS.

Please confirm if this is the right book:

Undocumented DOS: A Programmer's Guide to Reserved MS-DOS Functions
Data Structures
By Andrew Schulman, Raymond J. Michels, Jim Kyle, Tim Paterson, David
Maxey, Ralf Brown

I found it at
http://www.fetchbook.co.uk/compare.do?search=0201570645
for £22.01

Would be good to read, but not available here :-(
Of those many undocumented books series by A. Schulmann, only UndocDOS was available in Spain (under a bad translation, btw), but I would suggest that you check with Amazon. You may find some (if you are interested in others too). I don't know the status of UndocDOS there either...
The FSF boycotts Amazon (http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/amazon.html) and I agree with them, so I won't follow your advice :) The more so as we don't have credit cards and can't buy electronically from abroad. So, if anyone has this (or Pat's) book and wants to sell it to me, you're welcome ;-)

Thanks,
Lucho

[Freedos-devel] (OT) New mail worm

2004-03-03 Thread Jim Hall
At my work, some people have been nailed by this new mail worm, so I
thought I'd send an email to the lists to let people know about it. See
http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Just to let you know, I do not make a habit of removing anyone from the
FreeDOS lists unless they are very clearly spamming the lists or sending
trolls/garbage (we've only had this happen once or twice - I think the
last one was an ad to increase the size of a body part.) If there is a
reason to drop anyone (they've gone on vacation, ...) and I need to send
an email to let you know you've been dropped, the email will come from
Jim Hall [EMAIL PROTECTED] and not any other address from
SourceForge or FreeDOS.org. And I don't send attachments, so don't open
them.

Sorry for the OT cross-post, but I didn't want someone to get bitten by
this because they thought they'd be dropped from the list otherwise.
