Just in case anyone is interested in the press coverage this is getting:

Heise Online was the first to post an article about us:
http://www.heise.de/english/newsticker/news/77674

I also sent out something of a press announcement to a variety of news

But it seems someone else already submitted something to Slashdot, since
they have an article about us now:

What is immediately appearant is that not a lot of people realy realise what
FreeDOS realy is like, i.e. we have an imago problem.

Like the people saying that there should be a port of wine to FreeDOS. Does
nobody out there know that we can already run windows apps?

They are wrong about reactos though.

Building FreeDOS is WAY more difficult then building reactos. We had to
defragment 80Gb on 8086 with 256 kb RAM.

In reactos there is LOTS of memory and a very high code reuse.

you cannot do decent checking in 100 lines. dosfsck

aspects of filesystem consistency.

Only 15pc of that are for the lowlevel disk access:

Maybe the reactos chkdsk just ask the kernel for a

[Freedos-devel] The show must go on

2006-09-05 Thread Imre Leber
Or at least the project.

Here are the changes to defrag you can expect from me in the forseeable future.

I will move it to openwatcom. This way it can be compiled for 386. This will
probably double the speed, since everything is internally computed as 32bit.
Anyway I believe that all of FreeDOS after version 1 should be compilable with
openwatcom.

I will add a new defragmentation method called quick try. This will be a fast
method of defragmenting some files on FAT32.

It will scan through the directories and for each file check wether it is
fragmented. If it is it will move it to a space that is large enough to contain
the complete file. If no space can be found it will move on to the next file.

This will be a very fast method that will unfragment some files, especially if
there is lots of free space left.

Not if you will use the OW 16-bit compiler (WCC). Although it has a switch
optimize for 386, the generated code will not use 32bit registers.

Pentium IVs report themselves as 801586s - see the Linux 2.2.18
announcement at http://lkml.org/lkml/2000/12/11/178:

The major thrust has been support for processors running in
excess of 2GHz, support for the CyrixIII processor and also
basic support for the Pentium IV. Unfortunately Intel chose to
ignore all precedent in model numbering via cpuid and report a
family of '15'. This sudden jump broke assumptions in the
 kernel tree without any warning.

My recollection, possibly faulty, is that Intel chose 801586 because
Windows NT refused to boot on an 80886 (it only checked the bottom 3 bits
of the family number and thought it was on an 8086).

I am certainly glad and happy that FreeDOS 1.0 is out. My apologies
for those (including you) that believe the contrary.
But I am certainly aware that (and I agree with you) that we have and
image problem, and that most people just trashes away a project at the
first critical problem they find. And when the very FIRST feature that
is mentioned about FreeDOS is cool one that we certainly do NOT
have, then I'd say we have a problem, and that the image problem can
get worse.

Re: [Freedos-devel] FreeDOS

2006-09-05 Thread Aitor Santamaría
Easy: just for going to the extreme, write a DOS API extension
function that checks the drive passed as argument in BX. ;-)
Anyway, I am of Eric's opinion: you cannot write a complete, good
CHKDSK code in that few lines.

Well i am still kind of im(/de)pressed that FreeDOS chkdsk has some 30
lines of code and that a chkdsk in reactos takes only about 100 lines.

 Hi Imre,

nobody would complain if DEFRAG needed a 386 and XMS
to do defragging on FAT32... Ever seen a FAT32 drive
in a PC-XT...? And about Wine for DOS: Okay, with
HXRT, you can even run some Windows programs in DOS,
but if you have reasonably new hardware, you can
equally well use ReactOS or Linux/Wine for that...
DOS should rather be used for what DOS is good at :-).

 Eric

They are wrong about reactos though.
Building FreeDOS is WAY more difficult then building reactos. We had
to defragment 80Gb on 8086 with 256 kb RAM.
In reactos there is LOTS of memory and a very high code reuse.

Of course, that could be changed in OW (if someone is willing to do the work).

I will move it to openwatcom. This way it can be compiled for 386.

This will probably double the speed, since everything is internally
 computed as 32bit.

Not if you will use the OW 16-bit compiler (WCC). Although it has a switch
optimize for 386, the generated code will not use 32bit registers.

Re: [Freedos-devel] FreeDOS

2006-09-05 Thread Blair Campbell
Well, in the case of Windows, all of the work is part of the system
dlls, so yes, in ReactOS, all a chkdsk needs to do is call those dlls,
which doesn't take much code.
