This has been brought up several times in the last 20 years or so.

And no, I would likely not use it. The mailing list posts come in
automatically to my mailbox, nicely filtered, even when I am not on my
main computer. I can read and answer if necessary when ever I have time.
A web forum requires to have the time to actively log in and see what is
new. Time which I might not have.

That's why I prefer to have the mailing lists. It just seems that less
and less people these days know how to properly handle emails,
apparently don't even know anymore how to send an email to a mailing
list instead of doing full quote replies on digest or unrelated topic
threads. Using a web browser to deal with email is one of the fallacies
these days, instead of using a proper email client, which also would be
able to properly show threads and not only email in chronological order
of being send...

Absolutely not, no.

I hate web fora. There's no standard markup, no standard way of
quoting, threading is usually broken, and they are often full of
horrid ugly graphics, animations and other time-wasting junk. I would
need to check tens to hundreds of websites to see if anyone commented,
instead of it all coming to 1 email inbox I can access from anywhere.

Email beats all of them.

I used "Forum" on www.freedos.org because I used to get a lot of
emails from folks asking if there was a place to talk about FreeDOS
with other FreeDOS users. They were looking for a link called "Forums"
.. the old "Email lists" link name didn't help these people find the
email lists. (I think the newer generation is more used to web forums
like on Facebook and Slack, but will use email lists when they realize
that's what we use.)

I agree with Harald. I would prefer not to move us to a web-based
forum. There are some administrative headaches that go with
maintaining a web forum. But the more practical reason is we just
don't need it. Every time a "web forum" has been proposed here, we
haven't been interested. And I'm perfectly fine with keeping the email
lists as our primary way to communicate with each other. Don't need to
fix that.

[Freedos-devel] A web-based forum to replace the mailing-lists?

2022-05-03 Thread Paul Dufresne via Freedos-devel
I was confused by the suggested word "forums" in a previous email.

That's why I wrote: "We also communicate through a web-based discussion program
called Forum, but it is less used: (Link to forums)." I thought that maybe we
had a web-based discussion program like phpBB (https://www.phpbb.com/demo/ )
that I was just not using because we did not used it much. But it looks like we
use the mailing-lists because we don't have a web based forum.

At least, I would prefer we use a web-based forum, because that way, threads
about not concluded subjects remains (supposing no one erase them), while with
mailing lists these subjects just tend to get forgotten. Also messages can be
edited before I see them (so that erroneous information can have been already
fixed).

But would you use it instead of the mailing-lists if it would be there?

Would Jim consider adding such an extension to the website?___
