[Freedos-user] FreeDOS 1.0 install howto and known problems
Hi all, I created an initial version of a FreeDOS 1.0 install howto, including a list of known problems and workarounds. The text is partially based on the FreeDOS beta install howto. Because the SF Wiki can be slow, I created a static copy on my homepage: http://www.coli.uni-saarland.de/~eric/FdDocEn-FdInstall.html (still interesting: 14k of Wiki text make a whole 31k of HTML) The editable Wiki page can be found at: http://fd-doc.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?n=FdDocEn.FdInstall I recommend to announce changes on the list or at least email me about them, so I can update my static copy accordingly. Layout fixes and sectioning improvements are welcome, too. The static copy can also be added to our download area on ibiblio or on freedos.org - as long as it is hard to miss the page, any place will do :-). Please check both the install instructions and the known bugs list. If you have a second PC to test on, do a real install and add your experiences to the "Installing on a PC" section. As I cannot install and edit the Wiki at the same time, I just described everything before and after you boot the install cdrom and work with it (partitioning, formatting, boot menu), but not the install cdrom workings themselves. However, they are pretty self-explanatory, driven by interactive menus, so in my opinion you still can get started with the incomplete "Installing on a PC" descriptions already :-). Thanks, and enjoy :-) Eric PS: If there are any post-1.0 updates to packages, those should be listed on this page as well, and there should be a directory "updates" in the ibiblio download area :-) PPS: I suggest to continue the discussion on freedos-user, not on freedos-devel. For those who are only on -devel, I send a copy of this first mail to that list as well. - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. [Freedos-user] new artworks to print on your freedos cdrom label and box
Hi all, John Valdez updated his FreeDOS cdrom label artwork collection, thanks a lot for that :-) You can get the 361 kilobyte ZIP file from his page (until his bandwidth is exhausted, I hope we can put up a mirror in our download area... ;-)) which is: http://www.geocities.com/jvaldeztoo/FreeDOS/Downloads/FDLS.htm The file contains 3 JPEGs, which you can also download separately: FDfront - for the front cover of your crystal case. Features our big blue fish :-). 60 kB small. Text: FreeDOS Operating System / come to feel free www.freedos.org / INTERNET COMMUNITY / Harnessing the power of Open Source Version 1.0 Final CDlabel - you can print that one on the cdrom itself or on a sticker for the cdrom, if you have the right equipment... Text: Support the FreeDOS Project by kindly sharing this software with everyone in your community / FreeDOS Operating System / WWW.FREEDOS.ORG / VERSION 1.0 / FINAL / For Distribution with any PC compatible / New or legacy / free of charge / PC COMPATIBLE / come to feel free / www.freedos.org / CD KEY: NOT REQUIRED / Fully bootable CDROM / INTERNET COMMUNITY / FreeDOS is a Trademark of Jim Hall and is an open source project FDback - apart from some text which you will already have guessed, this file features screenshots of DEFRAG, HELP and EDIT, as well as quite some amount of text about FreeDOS 1.0 :-). FreeDOS aims to be a complete, free, 100% MS-DOS compatible operating system that serves and promotes the freeware DOS community. If you are like a lot of people you have a load of stuff in your closet - stuff like old DOS games, spreadsheets and a few other programs that used to serve you well until command line lost the battle to the graphical interface of Windows(tm). But those old DOS programs are still useable with FreeDOS. Save your money and avoid chasing that mouse pointer on the screen. Linux users can enjoy the tools of FreeDOS using DOSEmu. So find some space on your FAT partition or get that old 486 from the attic and start having fun with FreeDOS... Use powerful tools like FreeDOS Edit 0.7d and Defrag to enhance and empower your PC to get the job done. Enjoy LFN support, easy multi-boot with Windows 9x-2003/NT/ME/XP, FAT32 File system and large disk support (LBA), Media player (MPXPLAY) for mp3, ogg, wmv..., supports AC97 and SB16, for graphics Print screenshots in ESC/P, HP PCL or PostScript mode, Cutemouse driver w/ scroll wheel support, disk support includes SHSUCDX (replaces MSCDEX) and XCDROM (cdrom driver) and XDMA, a UDMA driver for DOS - allows up to 4 hard disks! This text is not perfect, as you can see, but already very nice :-). I suggest to put a copy of the artworks into our FreeDOS 1.0 download area and maybe update it with one with even more finetuned text at some later moment :-). Eric - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. Re: [Freedos-user] FD installer
Dear Chris, Probably your BIOS does not support booting from CD-ROM, you will have to write the floppy disk boot image to a floppy disk using Rawrite for DOS, Rawritewin or dd if you are using a Linux/BSD hosted system and boot your 486dx2 from that floppy disk. I installed FreeDOS 1.0 full on a Pentium 133 Mhz with Phoenix BIOS. It does not support booting form CD-ROM ether (because the BIOS frimware is too outdated). Even if your BIOS settings menu provides the option to boot from CD-ROM, this does not meant that it will actually work. The boot floppy disk is your friend ;) - Marti [EMAIL PROTECTED] schreef: > What computers does it work on with out locking up? > > 486dx2 80mhz scsi2 and ide 16mb ram 500mb ide partition (80gb eide) > > It lock up when attempted to boot the install cd from external scsi cdrom. > > hris > http://www.aotksc.com/ > --- |_|0|_| Marti van Lin Home Portal http://members.home.nl/ml2mst |_|_|0| Auhor of Free MultiOS |0|0|0| http://www.uitwisselplatform.nl/projects/freemultios - Take Surveys. Re: [Freedos-user] DOS PR question - what LOOKS fancy in DOS?
I don't mind at all. A few contributions through this list are the least I can do for the free use of a great operating system like FreeDOS. --John Hupp - Original Message - From: Jim Hall To: freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net Sent: Sunday, September 24, 2006 12:42 PM Subject: Re: [Freedos-user] DOS PR question - what LOOKS fancy in DOS? Hi John, Eric gathered up all your screenshots, and emailed them to me, asking that I post them somewhere on the web site. Actually, it's not a bad idea. I hope you don't mind, but I've posted them at http://www.freedos.org/news/screenshots/ Technically, SourceForge REALLY REALLY discourages posting screenshots in the web content area for project websites, as they tend to be abused. So, I'll probably automatically & silently remove these from the web site after a few months. In the meantime, these are good to share with people for some good PR for what you can run (graphically) on FreeDOS. -jh - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. Re: [Freedos-user] DOS on VM ?
"Marcel E. Tschudin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote on 09/23/2006 20:07:20 +0300: # 1) Which of the two VMs would be preferable for this application. I've personally had better luck with VMware, though VPC works okay. VPC is probably slightly more intuitive to use if you've never worked with a VM setup before (but neither is too difficult). VPC has a (to me) massively annoying bug which causes the keyboard to sometimes stop working in the VM if you have locked the host computer's screen. Neither of them has built-in drive sharing for DOS, so you'll have to set up network support à la LanMan to get to your host computer's drives. - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. Re: [Freedos-user] DOS on VM ?
... in the mean time I found how at least to access the Floppy Drive with FD on the VM. There would be a more convenient way by using a Virtual Floppy Drive, like this one http://chitchat.at.infoseek.co.jp/vmware/vfd.html#betabut I haven't yet managed to access it from FD on the VM; but this may be just because of my limited knowledge as a newbie in this field. Has any one of you already tried this? I also have the impression that I need to improve the configuration of FD on the VM. At the moment VM boots always from the iso-file (which is device A:\) and not from the root directory (which is X:\). This means that each time the VM is started the FD options have to be selected: - Continue to boot from CD-ROM- Install to Hard Disk- Select Language- Run FreeDOS from CD-ROMIs it possible that FD boots and runs automatically within the VM, i.e. without using the CD-ROM and setting each time these options? Further, why can't I create a new directory in FD? I think having tried all possible permutations of the md or mkdir command, but it want accept it. Trying to open "help" as indicated in the readme file results in an error where the VM has to shut down. Do those of you who have FD also running on VMware these problems? Or, what might I have done wrong? Thank you for your help.Marcel - Take Surveys. Earn Cash.
