[Freedos-user] FreeDOS install on 2nd hard drive

2007-12-07 Thread Eric
I have two hard drives. The first (HDA) looks like this:

HDA1: Dell rescue (FAT)
HDA2: WinXP
HDA3: Windows swap

The second look like this:

HDB1: Spare 1.4 GB
HDB2: NetBSD
HDB3: Kubuntu
HDB5: Linux swap
HDB6: Linux /boot
HDB7: NTFS drive (D:)
HDB8: Shared FAT partition (M:)
HDB9: Linux /home

I'd like to put FreeDOS on HDB1, but wanted to know if that was possible.
When I boot using a DOS bootable floppy, HDA1 shows up as C:, HDB8 shows
up as D:. If I install FreeDOS, will it be able to use C:?

Also, will FreeDOS mess up my drive lettering in XP?

I boot using Grub and have read the previous recent posts about booting
FreeDOS with Grub, so I think I should be OK.

[Freedos-user] Run command.com 0.82 pl 1 from a box WinDos (Gui for FreeDOS)

2007-12-07 Thread OSCAR GONZALEZ

Hi Jim

David was searching for a software which is falsely distributed as
"free", the software is named "FreeWin". In reality "FreeWin" is a
modified version of Windows 3.11, see the thread :
http://www.computing.net/windows31/wwwboard/forum/12120.html

WinDOS is maintained by Oscar; we wrote about renaming the project and
Oscar mentioned once "FreeWin", but his work is based on the open
source SEAL and has nothing to do with Windows as the above mentioned
FreeWin.

[Freedos-user] disc partitition / filesystems FDos undertands

2007-12-07 Thread David Zabriskie

I saw there was a tool that looked like fsck from unix (dosfsck) is says it
understands
fat32(LBA) so I tried to reinstall with fat32(lba) the bootable cd crashes just
after detecting the
hard drive, so I'm guessing the OS doesn't want itself on a fat32 fs?

I guess I'll have to live with a *big* cluster size.

You mentioned something about using a boot floppy and 'mounting' the cd-rom iso
image
from it for installation. where would I find an image of the floppy that has
the needed utilities?

I'll reformat to fat16(lba) and copy over the ISO and other downloaded files
for it
and try to reinstall again.

I remember using 4dos vs command.com to get better shell scripting, I saw
you have 4dos available. To use it would I change the entries in config.sys
to use that instead of comand.com?

I accidently used ls instead of dir, it said I didn't have something -
I'm guessing an XMS/EMM386 type thing? I remember using QEMM
for memory managment, but understood they have since gone out of
business? Is that something the installer never got to, due to waiting
forever for the DHCP reply? I was advised to just not install networking stuff
for the 1st install, do I just untick all the things that look like networking?
The packet driver does find the NIC and ID it correctly.

How do I install the 'packages' that were not installed at installation?

Sorry to be such a bother *sigh*

Fuzzy

All,

This flamewar is not helpful or productive. If anything, it's harmful.
Please, I'm asking you to stop so we can get back to talking about
real issues for FreeDOS.

"Federal Case", you say??A phrase rarely heard outside the U.S.A.,
which
refers to the laws we use to prosecute gangsters or racketeers?? With
your
recent f.iend, that is 2 NEW additions to your English "lexicon", after
your
hilarious "3nd" on BTTR last month or your TERRIBLE grammar yesterday in --

So tell us, my good friend [G]retch, who now "coaches" you on your
otherwise
LOUSY English?? One of the "Big-time Trolls" from North America, or else
a
REAL gangster/racketeer, maybe??

[And thanks to one of your OWN countrymen for the words "Big-time
Trolls"!!]

> The guys you mentioned to be your witnesses, Kuhnt and Lucho, they are

Not "witnesses", as this is not your "Federal Case", surely!! Just
friends
who have also been STUCK "dealing with" you in the past, as noted in --

> The SHSUCDX bug you mentioned is NOT commonly known.

I mentioned NO such "bugs" by name or number. The one you noted IS NOT
the
same as what I had in mind.

As for the comment by Eric Auer that --

> Jack is not going to help Japheth to make UIDE32 anyway

Of course not!I believe a DOS driver should be "general purpose" and
NOT
limited to only one special Extended Memory manager! I want all my
drivers
to run with MS-DOS EMM386, QEMM, 386MAX, RM386, and all other such
managers.
FLEXIBILITY outranks saving 4K of XMGR/UIDE upper-memory.Besides, all
my
friends, and a majority of users they advise, want something SIMPLE.
They
need and appreciate "normal" DOS systems. They are NOT interested in
DPMI,
VCPI nor other 32-bit Hallelujah "Sorcery". So they all use UMBPCI and
are
quite happy with it. For them, I will ALWAYS do "general purpose"
drivers!

Great!

BIASED or not, let the world judge it, I think it's the best answer!

History have no mercy on bad guys, and it reminds us what's the name of the
good people.

Ask yourself: Want to be good or bad?

Sorry my English sucks, I didn't even have a chance to go to University.
I check up the WIKI and found the following ...

Wag can also be:

* A verb expressing a rocking movement, as in the wagging of a dog's tail,
also used to describe the motion of chemical bonds
* A person who is fond of making jokes
* A verb referring to truancy in Australian or New Zealand slang
* Wag's, an American restaurant chain

WAG can refer to:

* WAG, {Wild Ass Guess} In electronic forums
* WAGs, a British tabloid press term for the Wives and Girlfriends of
sportsmen, particularly footballers
* Walgreens, a U.S. convenience/drug store (NYSE symbol: WAG)
* Wanganui Airport, New Zealand (IATA code: WAG)
* Welsh Assembly Government, an executive body in Wales
* West Asian Games, a sporting event
* Wireless Advisory Group, a group which provides advice and information on
wireless technologies to the JANET community
* Wireless Audio Gesture, a wireless device worn by guitarists to change
effects
* World Air Games, an international competition of air sports
* The Winnipeg Art Gallery in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Can you write in plain English?
Thank you!
