Re: [Freedos-user] Why I use FreeDOS
Oh, I know that. Last year I spent several months talking to them and HP was bold enough to say WHo needs you. It's free. Complete ignorance on their part, which makes me very happy I left the several years ago. Point is that they do distribute it and it is an opportunity to possibly showcase future enhancements. Also, there are people who purchase them for legacy applications, although under the misunderstanding that HP will support FreeDOS. I've heard from plenty of those people. Re: [Freedos-user] Large drives with 4k sectors presenting as 512b?
OK, I'm afraid I let this thread get out of hand. This is a passionate group. The fact of the matter is simple. Hardware does progress and we, the FreeDOS developers, have to accommodate new hardware. We may not do it as quickly as some like, but nonetheless, we do. There will come a time where certain hardware will no longer be supported. The simple fact of the matter is that the hardware may no longer be available to test on, or that supporting very old hardware interferes with supporting new hardware. When that happens, we will deal with it. Please try to continue this discussion in a manner that will result in a productive outcome. Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDos-user, SoundBlaster ?
Dosbox is an emulator that emulates an x86 processor and PC hardware. In this way, it is similar to qemu or bochs. It goes one step beyond in that they added to the emulator a DOS-like interface that maps the native file system into the DOS system calls, as well as the remaining DOS and BIOS system calls. Sound blaster refers to a set of ISA boards that were manufactured in the late 1980s and early 1990s. These cards were backward compatible in both hardware and API. The most common was the Sound Blaster 16 (SB-16) that emulators like dosbox, qemu and bochs emulate and map into the host operating system API. This is why the program recognizes sound blaster in dosbox. Most likely, your sound hardware is not SB-16 compatible, which explains why the program does not recognize your sound subsystem. Mpxplay is capable of recognizing many more cards, including Intel ICH (PC97) and Intel HDA which is common on most recent computers. [Freedos-user] DOS-C and GPL (was Re: Whatever happened to freedos-32?)
With respects to DOS-C, if loading non GPL drivers really did violate GPL, then it would have never been released under GPL. The comparison of drivers to OSLib is an apples and oranges comparison. A DOS loadable device driver is simply an executable that is loaded into memory that follows a certain calling convention. FreeDOS, or any GPLed MS-DOS alternative, would be totally useless if it disallowed non GPL device drivers, since the vast majority of device drivers are non GPL. Re: [Freedos-user] DOS and network security...
You're pretty much on the right track. FreeDOS is modeled after MS-DOS, which has no security features whatsoever. And you're right, adding them would be confusing to users, and more than likely break many applications. Isolating FreeDOS in some sort of virtualization such as dosemu, or a vmware type of environmet, would be about the easiest way of doing it. By the way, on of the toughest aspects of developing and supporting FreeDOS is the fact that there is no security and applications reach in and touch kernel data all the time. The kernel developers have to deal with this all the time. Pat On Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 3:55 PM, Michael Robinsonplu...@robinson-west.com wrote: It's starting to dawn on me that although Freedos is an excellent choice for being able to run most old dos programs, it's a nightmare from a network security point of view. I suppose there's the option of running it on top of Linux and using Linux to control where dos can go on your network, but I like to run Freedos natively. I guess I have gotten so used to Linux and Windows NT environments that I am taking for granted security gains that exist because there is a user context. DOS was developed before the Internet and before network security became a really big deal. To make dos secure would involve adding a user context to all the files and requiring that people log in I suppose, but that would be very confusing and I doubt it would be compatible. I'm starting to realize that Dos based Windows which is not an OS is also problematic because there's no user context. 98SE supposedly has user context, but everyone is an admin. Is there a way to enforce user context in 98SE to keep people from willy nilly adding accounts to get around the security? Short of locking up dos mode in 98SE, people can probably hack their way past anything I'd do. Eric says that there is no censorship with Freedos because everyone is an admin. Uge! [Freedos-user] Some simple list rules
1. Please remember that this is a users mailing list. Many of these folks are non technical and may not understand the ramifications of what they are asking for. When something that may be silly to you is asked, gently try to explain why it is not feasible. If the question comes up often enough, I will put it into the FAQ and you can simply point him or her to it. 2. Do not attack anyone's request. Making negative comments about one's intelligence, existence, family, pet, etc. is certainly not going to help FreeDOS. All it will do is have that individual turn away from using FreeDOS and spread negative comments about the project. 3. Do not act like a troll. Purposely asking questions that will start a flame war will not be tolerated. 4. Keep comments on topic. If you feel the need to change the direction of the thread, change the subject. Thank you. Re: [Freedos-user] A windows 9x replacement...
Well, I'm not sure that I want to put anything quite like this on the FreeDOS roadmap. The effort involved in something like this is about the same as it is for ReactOS. And it isn't the basic Windows DLLs, but all the support DLLs that are necessary for applications to run properly. To be honest, we just don't have the developers needed to get something like this out in a reasonable time frame. Even if we started out with something like WINE, there still a very large effort needed to make it work on top of FreeDOS. Now, if there's anyone out there who wants to prove me wrong, feel free. I'll be glad to give your effort a home in the FreeDOS project ;-) Pat On Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 5:20 PM, Michael Robinsonplu...@robinson-west.com wrote: Most people find that they don't need Windows 3.x, but a lot of software needs Windows 9x that won't work properly or at all in Windows NT and it's variants XP/2000/Vista/7 etcetera. One example is Warcraft II Battle Net edition. A better example is Red Alert Command and Conquer I. Wolfenstein 3D and Blake Stone don't work properly in freedos needing either Windows 9x's version of DOS or MS-DOS. I hear about people needing Windows 9x for Garmin GPS software and Mapinfo. Well, Windows 98 second edition is fairly unstable. The ME version of Windows is also unstable and the version of Dos under it is kinda hokey I understand. Worse, 98SE is proprietary software which you are supposed to have a license for. Never mind that these days people tend to install 98SE under vmware and don't worry about licensing. ReactOS is not a replacement for Windows on top of DOS, it is a replacement for NT that may never become stable. I try to ask what is going to get done in the next release or when XYZ is going to get fixed and I get attacked. ReactOS is developing very slowly, there are not enough developers. It could take years to get to 0.5. There's no telling when 1.0 will come out. So, how are efforts to replace Windows 9x coming along?
