Re: [Freedos-user] Why I use FreeDOS

2011-06-06 Thread Pat Villani
Oh, I know that. Last year I spent several months talking to them and HP
was bold enough to say WHo needs you. It's free. Complete ignorance on
their part, which makes me very happy I left the several years ago.

Point is that they do distribute it and it is an opportunity to possibly
showcase future enhancements. Also, there are people who purchase them for
legacy applications, although under the misunderstanding that HP will
support FreeDOS. I've heard from plenty of those people.

See HP, Dell, Asus, and you will learn quickly that FreeDOS is a
synonym for 'without operating system', intended for people that
install their own OS (which is most likely NOT FreeDOS)

Re: [Freedos-user] Large drives with 4k sectors presenting as 512b?

2011-04-11 Thread Pat Villani
OK, I'm afraid I let this thread get out of hand. This is a passionate
group.

The fact of the matter is simple. Hardware does progress and we, the
FreeDOS developers, have to accommodate new hardware. We may not do it as
quickly as some like, but nonetheless, we do.

There will come a time where certain hardware will no longer be supported.
The simple fact of the matter is that the hardware may no longer be
available to test on, or that supporting very old hardware interferes with
supporting new hardware. When that happens, we will deal with it.

Please try to continue this discussion in a manner that will result in a
productive outcome.

The talk will be in Larrison Hall 113 and will start at noon.

Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDos-user, SoundBlaster ?

2010-09-11 Thread Pat Villani
Dosbox is an emulator that emulates an x86 processor and PC hardware. In
this way, it is similar to qemu or bochs. It goes one step beyond in that
they added to the emulator a DOS-like interface that maps the native file
system into the DOS system calls, as well as the remaining DOS and BIOS
system calls.

Sound blaster refers to a set of ISA boards that were manufactured in the
late 1980s and early 1990s. These cards were backward compatible in both
hardware and API. The most common was the Sound Blaster 16 (SB-16) that
emulators like dosbox, qemu and bochs emulate and map into the host
operating system API. This is why the program recognizes sound blaster in
dosbox.

Most likely, your sound hardware is not SB-16 compatible, which explains why
the program does not recognize your sound subsystem. Mpxplay is capable of
recognizing many more cards, including Intel ICH (PC97) and Intel HDA which
is common on most recent computers.

I might add that I would not generally recommend using
 the DOSBox built-in DOS

To be useful for me, 2 things would have to change:

 - Remove the word DOS from the name (the thing is unable to boot
into a PC, so it's not a OS and thus not a DOS)

 - Remove the DOS-like interface that maps the native file system
(so turn it into a clean 80386 / 80486 / early Pentium PC emulator)

[Freedos-user] Help us redesign www.freedos.org

2009-11-11 Thread Pat Villani
Hi all,

As you all know, the FreeDOS web site is run by volunteers, all of
which are programmers and not web designers. Now we're asking for
help. If you're a web designer or would like to try your hand at web
design, here's your chance. Help us update the FreeDOS web site
design!

Web designers can submit their design idea via email. We'll post the
top finalists and provide a way for people to vote for their favorite
new web design. In recognition, we'll provide a “Original site design
by your name” link in the footer. Our site gets tens of thousands of
hits per day, and that link will help you get seen. This could be a
resume-builder for you to break into web design, or a reference for
your portfolio if you're already a professional web designer.

If you're interested, details are at Jim Hall's blog:
http://www.freedos.org/jhall/ and at
http://sourceforge.net/userapps/wordpress/jhall1/2009/10/20/are-you-a-web-developer/
.

Thanks.

Re: [Freedos-user] [Freedos-devel] How can I help with FreeDOS 1.1?

Hi Joe,

Welcome. Some answers:

So, anyway, I'm excited about FreeDOS 1.1, and I want to help get it out the

Thank you for volunteering.

As far as what I can offer. I'm pretty fluent in DOS batch programming,
linux bash, Perl, Java, C... a few others. It appears that FreeDOS uses a
packaging system. Well, I've rolled some of my own packages for Debian, and
I don't think FreeDOS's packaging system can be more complicated and
Debian's. Oh, and I've got some free time. So... what needs doing?

Time is a major factor. If you're willing to help. I can definitely
use it. I'm also glad you have the programming background. It will
be quite useful.

Oh, and are there web-pages you can direct me to which explain:
1 - Who's in charge? Who decides when 1.1 is ready to go. Who packages it
into a CD image? Who approves/rejects packages?

I'm the project coordinator, so I get the honor of making a lot of the
decisions. Of course, there is a lot of input from the community as
well.

2 - The FreeDOS standard file-structure. While MS-DOS would throw
everything into C:\DOS, FreeDOS uses C:\FDOS\BIN, C:\FDOS\DOC... and some
stuff is further down in C:\FDOS\BIN\CTMOUSE. Where is the manifesto which
 helps decide what goes where?

I don't think there's anything more than what you'll find on the
current web pages.

Let's take this discussion off line and we can talk some more. I have
other volunteers as well, and we can start working on it. Personally,
I won't get any time until later this month, but now is a good time to
start.

If anyone else would like to join in the effort, contact me.

2009-11-01 Thread Pat Villani
Actually, I am less concerned about not having updated packages for
the distribution than I am about a lack of volunteers to put it
together. As Japheth has suggested, there are simpler ways to create
a new release, but even getting there requires work, which requires
volunteers.

At the moment, I do not have the time to work on it. Some time in
December, that may change and I may start working on it. At that
time, I have a couple of weeks of use it or loose it vacation time
that I will take. If all goes as planned, I will do something then.

Pat

P.S., For those not in the USA, here you can only carry over a
limited number of hours from one year to the next. In essence, you
are paid for working hard and not taking vacation by loosing your

I'm putting out a call for volunteers. Please reply with what
features and/or utilities you will be working on. As project
coordinator, I'll publish a list and start communications between
activities as necessary. If you would simply like to help but don't
know how, let me know. I'll check with the various developers and see
how you can contribute.

Once we get everyone working together, we will move discussions to the
appropriate lists: freedos-developer and/or freedos-kernel. That
should free up this list for user discussions.

I'm sure we can put all the energy I see on this list to good use.
Thank you, in advance, to all who step up to make this happen.

I assume that people will want my USB drivers to be part of the utilities
released with version 1.1, even though the distribution requirements are not
GPL-compatible. I will be continuing to work on those, and could use help
with them if anybody is interested (documentation, testing, additional

[Freedos-user] DOS-C and GPL (was Re: Whatever happened to freedos-32?)

2009-08-13 Thread Pat Villani
With respects to DOS-C, if loading non GPL drivers really did violate
GPL, then it would have never been released under GPL. The comparison
of drivers to OSLib is an apples and oranges comparison. A DOS
loadable device driver is simply an executable that is loaded into
memory that follows a certain calling convention.

FreeDOS, or any GPLed MS-DOS alternative, would be totally useless if
it disallowed non GPL device drivers, since the vast majority of
device drivers are non GPL. Besides, Richard Stallman is well aware
of our project and would have contacted us if he felt we were doing
something wrong.

Reading some old mailing list archives I found, I think it's something
about the licensing of OSLib. As previously discussed in the BTTR Software
forum, DOS-C (The FreeDOS Kernel) possibly violates the GPL by allowing to
load non-GPL DOS device drivers. Now in FreeDOS-32's architecture the
native drivers and applications are linked into the kernel or something,
so the OSLib guy said they all have to be licensed under the GPL too when
 using OSLib.

Re: [Freedos-user] DOS and network security...

2009-06-21 Thread Pat Villani
You're pretty much on the right track. FreeDOS is modeled after
MS-DOS, which has no security features whatsoever. And you're right,
adding them would be confusing to users, and more than likely break
many applications. Isolating FreeDOS in some sort of virtualization
such as dosemu, or a vmware type of environmet, would be about the
easiest way of doing it.

By the way, on of the toughest aspects of developing and supporting
FreeDOS is the fact that there is no security and applications reach
in and touch kernel data all the time. The kernel developers have to
deal with this all the time.

but I like to run Freedos natively.  I guess I have gotten
so used to Linux and Windows NT environments that I am taking
for granted security gains that exist because there is a
 user context.

DOS was developed before the Internet and before network
security became a really big deal.

To make dos secure would involve adding a user context to
all the files and requiring that people log in I suppose,
but that would be very confusing and I doubt it would be
 compatible.

I'm starting to realize that Dos based Windows which is not
an OS is also problematic because there's no user context.
98SE supposedly has user context, but everyone is an admin.
Is there a way to enforce user context in 98SE to keep
people from willy nilly adding accounts to get around
the security?  Short of locking up dos mode in 98SE,
people can probably hack their way past anything I'd
 do.

Eric says that there is no censorship with Freedos because
everyone is an admin.  Uge!  How does one sandbox Freedos
properly short of running it on top of Linux?

[Freedos-user] Some simple list rules

2009-06-20 Thread Pat Villani
1. Please remember that this is a users mailing list. Many of these
folks are non technical and may not understand the ramifications of
what they are asking for. When something that may be silly to you is
asked, gently try to explain why it is not feasible. If the question
comes up often enough, I will put it into the FAQ and you can simply
point him or her to it.

2. Do not attack anyone's request. Making negative comments about
one's intelligence, existence, family, pet, etc. is certainly not
going to help FreeDOS. All it will do is have that individual turn
away from using FreeDOS and spread negative comments about the
project.

3. Do not act like a troll. Purposely asking questions that will
start a flame war will not be tolerated.

4. Keep comments on topic. If you feel the need to change the
direction of the thread, change the subject.

Thank you.

binaries this time, but please email if you want / made those.

Bart is already working on features as combined country sys and
built-in country settings support and f_node free operation for
the next FD kernel, 2039 :-). Thanks to everybody who made the
2038 release possible, by using 2036, reporting bugs, writing
bug reports, documentation of patches, packaging zips etc :-)

 Release Notes and Change Log:

 https://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=689068

 Known but almost fixed issues:

 - main.c copyright string mentions 1995-2006 ;-)

 - you cannot rename things in a full root dir, 2039 will fix
this issue which is listed as Bugzilla item 1908 afaik :-)

 - partition tables are now read via CHS instead of LBA if possible,
might cause regression bugs if BIOS / MBR CHS geometry is wrong?

 - files above 2 GB size can cause problems with signedness of
file offsets, which is easy to fix if error handling either
uses a separate flag or uses -1 instead of any negative

 - maybe others

Bugs fixed in kernel 2038, in no particular order:

 - handling of CHS-only BIOSes overflow / off-by-1 fixed by RayeR

 - int 21.1c detection of invalid drives fixed by Tom

 - CP/M call to support ancient apps, fixed by Bart and others
  (sourceforge tracker id: 2421577)

 - int 21.7303 get FAT32 disk space now accepts drivespec with
and without slash, fixing sourceforge tracker item 2380828

 - assume that BIOS data cannot be before 1980, fixes y2k BIOS
  bug compatibility, Bugzilla item 1748

 - truename/chdir dir bug for SUBST fixed, Bugzilla item 1862

 - SYS now uses buffers when copying kernel and shell, fixes
usability bug on single floppy systems, Bugzilla item 1840

 - EXE load size handled modulo 1 MB, fixes bug caused by odd
header of Turbo C++, Bugzilla item 1854

 - int 21.29 now reports invalid drives, fix Bugzilla item 1953
as well as SF tracker item 2362450

 - use segment instead of offset for handle NULL pointer check,
fixing compat bug for FILES alloc apps, Bugzilla item 1956

 - fix compatibility with a game using 77a8 attrib in findfirst

 - NUL device returns 0 bytes in both raw and cooked mode, fixes
DJGPP SED problem. Might fix Bugzilla item 1793, please test!

 - avoid f_node panic for critical error int 24 handler, by Tom

 - support int 2f.4a00 callback to let a GUI replace the usual
change disk message on single floppy systems

 - fix MS QB4 QBasic / QuickBasic alloc double free compatibility

 - you can now use the JEMM FASTBOOT option for int 19 reboot as
the kernel now stores some original pre-DOS int vectors in RAM

 - MKTEMP filenames now follow DOS 3-4/6 style unless you set the
VERSION to 5.x, avoids compat issues with directory choice

 - SYS now updates both main and backup boot sectors if FAT32, as
some tools (incl DOSFSCK) would show warnings about mismatches

 - reboot while files are open is now less likely to cause cross
linked files, more secure FAT handling idea by Hardi Stengelin

 - improved compatibility with old FCB based apps such as old GEM
or GEM/XM versions, fixes sourceforge bug tracker item 2253450

Please verify that all bugs are fixed and check our bug archives
to see which other bugs got fixed without being listed above :-)

 Candidates: Bugzilla 1753, 1793, 1658, 1779, 1814, 1875, 1923,
 1828, 1956... Sourceforge 2733092 (QEMM works only with 2037?)
and 2547549 (problems booting from 1.5 terabyte harddisk ;-)).

Please report bugs, problems, suggestions, regressions etc, too.

Re: [Freedos-user] A windows 9x replacement...

2009-06-10 Thread Pat Villani
Well, I'm not sure that I want to put anything quite like this on the
FreeDOS roadmap. The effort involved in something like this is about
the same as it is for ReactOS. And it isn't the basic Windows DLLs,
but all the support DLLs that are necessary for applications to run
properly. To be honest, we just don't have the developers needed to
get something like this out in a reasonable time frame. Even if we
started out with something like WINE, there still a very large effort
needed to make it work on top of FreeDOS.

Now, if there's anyone out there who wants to prove me wrong, feel
free. I'll be glad to give your effort a home in the FreeDOS project

Alert Command and Conquer I.  Wolfenstein 3D and Blake Stone don't work
properly in freedos needing either Windows 9x's version of DOS or
 MS-DOS.

I hear about people needing Windows 9x for Garmin GPS software and
Mapinfo.  Well, Windows 98 second edition is fairly unstable.  The
ME version of Windows is also unstable and the version of Dos under
it is kinda hokey I understand.  Worse, 98SE is proprietary software
which you are supposed to have a license for.  Never mind that these
days people tend to install 98SE under vmware and don't worry about
 licensing.

ReactOS is not a replacement for Windows on top of DOS, it is a
replacement for NT that may never become stable.  I try to ask
what is going to get done in the next release or when XYZ is
going to get fixed and I get attacked.  ReactOS is developing
very slowly, there are not enough developers.  It could take
years to get to 0.5.  There's no telling when 1.0 will come
 out.

So, how are efforts to replace Windows 9x coming along?  Theoretically,
freedos could support an open source replacement.

nansi.sys or alternatives to color/customize freecom or shells.  Maybe
someone can help add some info on it here:

I noticed the link at http://www.freedos.org/freedos/links/ Free Software

proprietary, there are some parts of it that were freely released (with links
to pieces at both sites previously mentioned).  Maybe a links page could be
added or moved to the wiki so everyone could share their favorite DOS related

I also added a few minor updates to the wiki on some of this stuff that I
thought might be useful to newer users.  Hope it's helpful.

In general, sound cards are handled directly under most DOS

Another solution is to look at the Allegro library at

What sort of support were you looking for? Are you thinking of doing

Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDOS 1.0 and Borland compiler v2.0

2009-05-12 Thread Pat Villani
Hi Jim,

I'm just starting as project coordinator, so excuse me if it takes a
little time to address this, but I'll keep it in mind for future
releases. If you address this on the developer list, maybe someone
else has seen it and may be able to help you.

 Hi gang,
I had to do some programming on the DOS human performance tests that I
wrote after a considerable break. I had downloaded FreeDOS 1.0 a while
ago and fortunately hadn't gotten around to installing it until a few
days ago. When I tried to recompile some code, the compiler started
 throwing errors like:

 Can't open file c:\bc\lib\emu.lib

even though the files were all there with no access restrictions. The
command line compiler gave similar errors, as did the command line
linker. As about the only thing I had done was to install the new
version of FreeDOS, I laboriously copied the essential Borland
installation to an ancient laptop that I use as a lab machine (using
1.44M floppies!). This had the same version of FreeDOS that I had
replaced. Sure enough, the compiler worked again and I got the
executable. I don't know what went wrong, but perhaps this will uncover
something that can be fixed for the next release.

Re: [Freedos-user] More FreeDOS usage

2007-01-24 Thread Pat Villani
Thanks. I've been here all along, just sitting back and letting the
community do its thing.

This goes back a while. Even when I was with hp, they were distributing
the disk with new units; just not as obvious. That was almost two years
ago, and I'm sure the same people are still there making the same
decisions to distribute FreeDOS with more systems. I'm sure we'll see
more and more.
