[Freedos-user] FLTK...
FLTK is based on XWindows which is used with Linux. I ported a subset of XWindows to DOS called NanoX or previously called MicroWindows which is sufficient to run the FLTK GUI. FLTK has no Win32 API compatibility. Microwindows has a tiny Win32 API compatible interface but compared to FLTK it does not come close in GUI features. You may want to try my XFDOS bootable CD when using VirtualBox: http://code.google.com/p/nanox-microwindows-nxlib-fltk-for-dos/downloads/list XFDOS is FreeDOS plus a FLTK desktop application. Also included are non-FLTK applications and further applications written using FLTK which both can be called from the desktop application. This CD comes with a number of more current packet drivers. One of them will fit with an emulated network card in VirtualBox. The Crynwr package from my testing is so old by now that you will have a hard time to find most of the network cards for these packet drivers today. You may want to look at my packet driver page: http://www.georgpotthast.de/sioux/packet.htm FLTK is GPL software and could be added to FreeDOS any time. Like GTK the FLTK GUI is used by applications written to use this GUI. Like the WinAPI is used by application written for Windows. FLTK is statically linked to an application now. Using djgpp's DXE both NanoX and FLTK could be compiled separately from the application to be loaded at runtime then. Similar to a DLL. In general FLTK can be used on Linux, Windows, Mac and DOS. So if you develop an application for FLTK for DOS it can easily be ported to Linux, Windows and Mac. Also you can port many FLTK applications written for Linux to DOS which is usually more effort than porting from DOS to Linux though. The Linux applications will often use automake and multithreading which makes it difficult to port them to DOS. Georg -- LogMeIn Rescue: Anywhere, Anytime Remote support for IT. Hi Bernd, thank you very much for your message. If you use isolinux-debug.bin for fdbasecd.iso then that explains why ISOHYBRID will not work. A floppy image will probably not be used a lot to write it on a real floppy today. I use it as a base to make bootable CDs according to the ElTorito standard. [Freedos-user] New XFDOS FreeDOS distribution
I used my port of the FLTK GUI toolkit to write a new desktop for DOS which I called SLWM. This allows you to select applications by clicking on the various icons on this desktop. SLWM runs in a loop of a small batch file. So when an application is selected SLWM terminates and leaves all the memory for the new application. SLWM restarts when the application terminates. The package includes mostly my ported applications, FlWriter, Antipaint, Dillo, Mupdf etc. plus my paket drivers collection to establish an internet connection. You can add almost any DOS applications by adding a desktop entry file for it as you would for KDE or Gnome. You can either download the SLWM desktop program and the applications to install them on your FreeDOS hard disk or download a bootable CD image with a FreeDOS distribution that runs the SLWM desktop and applications. Included is a readme file which provides a lot of information how to use and install XFDOS. This readme file can also be viewed from the SLWM desktop by clicking on an icon. Re: [Freedos-user] adding executable file to FreeDOS 1.1
I do not know if this helps you but if you want to set up a bootable CD with FreeDOS let me explain how I do that using is a completely different approach: I use Bochs to install FreeDOS on a VMWare disk image from the FreeDOS distribution CD ISO image and then make a bootable CD from this disk image. When booting this CD ROM it will appear as the C: drive and FreeDOS scans all other disks and lets you access them as D:,E: etc. Of cause you can access all files on the C: drive which is the CD too. First I make an empty hard disk image with BXImage which comes with Bochs. This can be e.g. 60 MB, 400 MB etc. Then I boot from the FreeDOS ISO image and install FreeDOS 1.1 on this hard disk image. I observed here that I have to uncheck to install the isolinux files to make this hard disk image bootable. The entire install process is described in detail in the FreeDOS Wiki. Then I load VDK which lets me access this disk image from Windows XP explorer and transfer files to it. Bochs lets you test if all works as expected using the hard disk image before making a bootable CD. You can also test the created CD image without burning it to a real CD. Finally I use Nero to convert the disk image to a bootable CD image using the El Torito standard. All this is described in detail my Bochs tutorial chapter four. https://peter-bochs.googlecode.com/files/Bochs%20-%20a%20Guide%20and%20Tutorial%20for%20Windows%20II.pdf I have to add that my applications do not seem to work with FreeDOS 1.1 and I have to resort to Rugxulo's bare DOS distribution to make it work. I get page faults when using FreeDOS 1.1 with cwsdpmi. Re: [Freedos-user] Setting up a shared printer
If your network attached printer is listening on TCP/IP port 9100 (HP JetDirect protocol) and your DOS program can generate something the printer can understand, then do the following: - Print your printer output to a file - Send the file to the printer using this command: nc -target printer address 9100 -bin filename Substitute printer address with the IP address of your printer and filename with the filename your program generated when you said print to file. For example, on my printer: nc -target 192.168.2.20 9100 -bin testfile.txt Will print testfile.txt over the network to the printer. (testfile.txt gets redirected on stdin to netcat.) Here is the fine print: Most new network attached printers will listen on port 9100. Yours might not. If it does nothing then it might be listening on the Unix LPD port (515) or the IPP port (631). Just try it, nothing bad will happen. Your DOS program has to generate output that your printer understands. That is usually some form of PCL output. Some printers can take raw ASCII text, some more expensive printers can do PostScript, and some cheap and nasty printers require Windows and can't do anything by themselves. If you have a printer that does not do ASCII, PostScript, or PCL and requires a Windows machine to do anything, it won't work for you. Mike Very interesting. I suggest you make a FreeDOS Wiki page from this information. I find it tedious to download lots and lots of files from the DJGPP site and putting them into the DJGPP directory. In the process you have to make sure that old packages do not overwrite the files installed by new packages. And you may have selected the wrong version needed or just missed some files. Therefore I made a ZIP archive of my DJGPP directory which I know works with Nano-X and FLTK. So you may use that or try the one you already have. I did not modify or recompile any DJGPP code for this. If you want to develop with Nano-X you just need the binary version. There is also the source code which allows you to recompile Nano-X.
