Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDOS on an old machine

2007-07-28 Thread Ulrich Hansen
Hi Bat,

gratulations to the successfull installation! :-)

Just for the record I'd like to add, that I installed
FreeDOS 1.0 recently on a quite similar machine,
a Compaq Contura Aero 486SXJ 33 Laptop with 20 MB RAM,
no CD/DVD and only an external PCMCIA floppy drive.

Though there is no CD drive, the installation was quite
easy, following the instructions on:

I just needed to get the "fdbasecd.iso" file on C:\ ,
rename it to "fdbootcd.iso" and boot with the floppy
made from "fdboot.img" by dskcopyx.

The last days I was kind of busy getting a DOS network up
and running. There are some unsolved questions yet
(especially I miss something like a free "Samba for DOS",
so I don't have to rely on a 12 years old "MS Client")
but that's a different story.

Again gratulations and happy hacking!
Uli

Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDOS on an old machine

2007-07-28 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi

Finally, I reinstalled FreeDOS, and now it works fine.

First, I installed Smart Boot Manager on a floppy, and than I put a floppy
drive to this old computer. And I put my dvd reader drive to this too. Than
I was able to boot FreeDOS CD, that was burned to a cd-rw.

I think the problem was that the hdd in the old computer has 504M place, but
in my computer the hdd had 520M.

So thanks for the help!

BaT

So you installed while the harddisk was plugged to another
computer, and then moved the harddisk to this computer?

Then you installed nothing ;-). That is not BASE. That is
just kernel and shell. You REALLY should install at least
himem and write a small config and autoexec.

This is probably because your 486 BIOS uses another geometry
than your "another computer" BIOS for the same disk. Maybe
the other computer uses LBA and the 486 does not.

I really recommend to install DOS on the 486 by installing it
on the 486. Not by plugging the harddisk to another computer.
If you need a diskette distro, please use FreeDOS Balder.

[Freedos-user] FreeDOS on an old machine

2007-07-28 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi!

I have an old computer and I installed FreeDOS on it. The computer has a
486dx processor, 16M ram, and an 520M hdd.

The installation was on my another computer, and on it FreeDOS booted and
worked well.
I installed just the base, but without base's packages. So i have 3 files in
C:\, a command.com, a kernel.sys and a FDOS\install.log. Nothing else. And
it can work, I tested it in qemu and on my "new" computer.

When I'm booting FreeDOS, it writes "Starting FreeDOS", then nothing
happens.

Previously, the OS was DOS 6.22 on this old machine, and it worked well.

So could you help me?

Thanks for the answers.

PS: Sorry for bad English. :)
