Postgres, using a modified version of Perter Nixon schema, i found that some
items in the insert querys doesnt have the corresponding column in the
schema, these mostly was complementary changes , i do agree with Peter, i
began using mysql, but switched to postgres after a couple of months, the
main reason was the lack of store procedures and triggers in mysql, the
Peter's voip schema is very simple and easy to understand.

a) If you use a Database backend for FreeRadius which one do you use?
LDAP for Auth and Postgresql for Accounting.
b) If you do not use a DB backend for FreeRadius, but do have a DB on your

I also have a mysql database but only use it for webapps that only work
with it.

c) If you do not use a DB backend for FreeRadius, but do have a DB on your

I don't use the RDMS for Authentication because LDAP is a far better
authentication database with much more support (sendmail, pam, apache,
proftpd, etc).

Yep. No arguements from me on these :-) For general purpose DB work Postgres
pretty much walks all over the competition when you take all these factors
into account. I can only imagine needing to pay for a commercial DB if I was
handling Terabytes of data. (Postgres happily handles many gigabytes of data
per table for me currently)

Do you mind telling me what replication system you use (Postgres has several)
and how you find it? Are there any gotchas/problems?
(I currently run my DBs standalone as I simply don't have the reliability
issues with postgres that used to force me to replicate/cluster my MySQL
boxes..)

TIA

Accounting - Redundant Postgres DB
== to other DBMS such as MySQL, Oracle its:
1. No license fee
2. Less Security Vulnerabilities
3. Easier to replacate
4. Lends to a Decentralized / Virtually Centralized DBMS
topology, which is better for security applications
5. Better Transaction Processing Performance
6. Less overhead
7. Control of source
8. Scales well
9. Faster

Auth/Authr - Multiple flat files crypted pass (by Realm) with
custom admin system (1000 and 5000 users per Realm / Group)
Reason:
Compared to DBMS its:
1. Faster
2. Easier to Maintain
3. More Reliable
4. More Secure
5. Independent Fault Tolerant
6. More flexibility for customization.

a) MySQL, but not for accounting.

b) I use detail logs for accounting.

c) There is so much fuckage in accounting packets. So I have a own
tool which does proper accounting (Start-Stop accounting actually
-- don't trust Session-Time) into a MySQL database. It also
handles duplicate sessions and vendor specific stuff (such as
   64 bit counters for traffic).

d) No, my own. attached. I have one mysqld running on each radius.
The database is synced periodically from multiple user management
databases. So these are pure lookup tables.

The group and type columns tell what type the entry is, the source
column tells me from where the data orginates (which other
   database).

Because we have more then one cisco over Internet, they act as
originating, and terminating, they are far away from a database server,
the VoIP streams on each of them are big (we use freeradius for VoIP
accounting), so we use a Message Queue Service to join radiuses to the
database, and we use Transaction Monitor to inserts the stream. We found
it as the best schema which suite our needs.
