On this note, does anyone know anything about UPS? Can they be
configured to send signals to the PC saying, 'hey, i'm not recieving
power anymore, you need to shut down now..'.

I can't see how UPS could be any good if this isn't a standard feature..
If your not around when the power goes out, how can you hsut the PC
down?

After some more experimentation, I have some tips on
troubleshooting the TV Guide corrupt problem. (This
 does raise some other issues.)

1). Here is a valid TV_CHANNELS entry from my
 local_conf.py
 TV_CHANNELS = [('2 KASA','KASA 2','2'),
 ('4 KOB', 'KOB 4', '4')]
The first entry '2 KASA' is critial and must match
the
 entry
in the listings_.xml or TV.xml file ! The
 second
'KASA 2' is what you want freevo to display on the
grid as the channel name, and of course the last
 entry
is the real channel number to address your tuner
 card.
Don't forget the left and right []'s

2). I also edited out all but 2 of the channels in
 the
.xmltv/tv_grab_na.conf file, and here is a portion:

 # config file: tv_grab_na 2.20030426
 #
 # this file is generated by running tv_grab_na
 --configure
 # the only change you should make is prefixing
 'channel:' lines
 # with a '#' to signal that they should be ignored
 during the
 # grab step
 #
 retry limit: 2
 retry delay: 30
 zip code: 87105
 provider: 70796 # "Source" - "City"
 channel: 2 KASA
 #channel: 3 QVC
 channel: 4 KOB
 #channel: 5 KNME
 #channel: 6 KWBQ

After working with a download of ONE or TWO
 channels,
and still getting TV Guide corrupt messages, I found
if I deleted any program that had a start time but
 no
end time, the Guide was no longer considered
 corrupt.
This program was usually the last program of the
 day,
 usually starting at 23:??

To manually delete the "offending program", you must
delete all lines in TV.xml or listings_.xml
 file
between a program's that does not have both a start time
 and
 an end time.

Here's an example of a single program listing (with
 a
 stop time):

KASA Fox 2 News at 9
 News

Most programs have more lines, news programs tend to
 have the fewest.

I tried using the tv_sort, but this did not prevent
the TV guide corrupt messages and indeed posts an
internal error message about a possible typo in
 tv_sort itself at line 149.

I do not know how to fix this in an automated way,
but I think it would involve working with the next
days listings as you approach midnight.

I also did some compares/troubleshooting with a Java
app called Freeguide, which I loaded on a windows
platform with Java 1.4.0. This app also downloads
 the
very same xmltv data and displays it on a grid
something like freevo. You could use Freeguide to
learn from or even assist in downloading data for
 freevo !

Freeguide does not process the downloaded listings
 and
as you pass midnight, it just opens the next day's
 xml
file and you could at least pinpoint the end time of
the current program by using the start time of the
next program on the same channel. Admittedly
 Freeguide
does not cross midnight seamlessly, something that
freevo probably needs to be able to do.

I think the use of a single TV.xml file will not be
practical for freevo for a couple of reasons: not
knowing the stop time of a program that crosses
midnight, and attempting to record a program farther
 in the future than today.

Hope this info is of assistance.

 Charles

[Freevo-users] Partition type for Freevo?

2003-06-10 Thread Mike Payson
What is the recommended partition type for Freevo? I've been using ReiserFS,
but after a accidentally tripped circiut breaker, my system won't reboot. I'm
working to recover it, but since the electrical is flaky in my current house,
I want to move to something a bit more robust (I know, I should just buy a
UPS...). What partition type provides the best mix of performance for Freevo
use, balanced with robust crash recovery?

Thanks,
Mike

[Freevo-users] runtime-pre5-test1 available and call for testers

2003-06-10 Thread Rob Shortt
Hi all,

There is a new runtime version available and the sooner we can test it
out the sooner we can go ahead and release 1.3.2-pre5. :)

For those of you that are feeling adventurous and are using Freevo from
CVS you may cvs update and then install this new runtime version. You
may find the runtime here:

http://freevo.sf.net/runtime/runtime-pre5-test1.tar.gz

Before you unpack this runtime you should probably backup your existing
runtime directory just in case.

cd /path/to/freevo
mv runtime runtime.orig
cvs update -d runtime
tar zxvf runtime-pre5-test1.tar.gz
This runtime package has runtime/apps,lib,dll,preloads inside and will
compliment the runtime directory out of CVS.

Be warned that this runtime weighs in at a hefty 18 megs but I think
that is a fair price to pay for less problems in the field. Also please
note that you must update and recompile runapp because I had to modify
it to handle staticly compiled apps.

Things to test:

-dxr3 support
-directfb support
-alsa support (mplayer)
-play dvd, cd, mp3, ogg
-test images
-test different video file formats. I had mplayer freeze on some of my
mpeg1 files but not others for instance. mplayer should also play nuv
files from mythtv, and hopefully normal nuv files... if not then I will
remove that patch.
-someone who already uses it should test timeshifting
-test mp1e in runtime/apps. This is compiled with a btaudio patch and
also supports v4l2.
-test mencoder

I don't have a regular v4l or v4l2 device in my Freevo box anymore
(using ivtv, woo hoo!!) so testing mencoder is especially important.

Also there was a mysterious audio crash in -pre4 and CVS that happened
while skipping to the next song which seems to have gone away, please
test this also (ok so that would be pretty obvious).

The runtime contains:
mplayer
mencoder
mpe1
jpegtran
cdparanoia
fceu
aumix
python 2.2.2 with modules:
CDDB
DiscID
Numeric
PIL
xmlplus
xmms
aomodule
cdrom
fchksum
mmpython
mx
ogg
pygame
pygphoto
pylirc
pyshift
twisted
I have been entertaining thoughs of including xmame but I think it is a
bit large and most people who use it usually find their own package anyways.

I don't think that I have forgotten to mention anything but I may
followup later.

Thanks!
-Rob

RE: [Freevo-users] Questions about the OSD - possible improvements?

2003-06-10 Thread Tommy Killander
Paul,

Got the Idlebar up and running in zerotime (many thanks for your example!)
and I got so carried away that I hacked myself a plugin for checking the
disk usage!
It's not beautifully engineered Pyhton, but it sort of does the job for me
:-)

I'm happy to submit it if anyone wants it... I can post it here (the class
is something like 50 lines of code that goes into the src/plugins/idlebar.py
somewhere), or I can post it to someone who have access (and knowledge) in
CVS.
Please advice.

Instead try cd /usr/local/freevo then ./runapp apps/mplayer/mplayer

The mplayer there is linked against the libs in the runtime/dll
directory and using runapp gets mplayer to use them. The next runtime
will be shipping with a staticly compiled mplayer so you won't have to
worry about this.

hmm, I would prefer that sort of plugin. Actually, I would prefer just
having mplayer working. Should I run a strace on mplayer to see why it
is crashing, perhaps? I will also try my .oggs to see if they have

pressing e to enter the directory(or the music menu choice) will give you

Not that y'all couldn't find 'em on your own... :-) I just bought one

That would be it. Freevo calls mplayer, mplayer segfaults and returns
control to Freevo; the problem is probably confined to mplayer.

I tried both with the runtime mplayer, and one I created myself.
However, the one I created myself had dxr3 support, as does the runtime
one. I haven't tried with one that does not have dxr3 support...that
_could_ be the issue.

Worth looking at, though I can't see why the DXR3 support would crash
unless it uses some libraries on your machine that don't match those

any idea how to get either framebuffer or X working as "full-screen"

As that is precluding me from getting rid of my digital cable and

However, sorry to disappoint you, but your system is way too slow for

Well, it's pretty trivial to do. We load in the freevo_record.lst and
compare the list to the guide when we're generating the TV guide. I
did it once before, and will probably do it again when my new box

You need to activate the plugins, add to your local_conf.py, something like this:

plugin.activate('idlebar.interface')
plugin.activate('idlebar.mail',level=10, args=('/var/spool/mail/aubin', ))
plugin.activate('idlebar.tv', level=20)
plugin.activate('idlebar.clock', level=50)

Probably should change the spool to your own mail spool :)

Can you elaborate on what you mean? I think calling something an XML
editor is probably wrong, maybe some way of tagging files and then
calling an action to group them, or associate a cover might make more
sense.

Python is very simple to learn, and using other people's code is very
easy because unlike Perl,C etc, it's very easy to be consistent,
stylewise. I use Perl a lot, but for group projects, you can't beat
the pick-up-and-code nature of Python.

That more or less the way we do it. We have internal playlists when
playing all items. Only the repeat ist missing, maybe a button (toggle

[Freevo-users] Nforce2 integrated graphics & audio (shuttle SN41G2)

2003-06-10 Thread Ole Andre Schistad
I've been working on my freevo setup for a few weeks now (problems with
hardware, also had the bad luck of buying a Hauppauge PCI that used the
CX2388XX chip and not the BT8x8 :-( ) and am now fairly close to my goal. A
few issues remain to be properly sorted out though, and hopefully someone on
this list has some tips for me.
First, my config:

Shuttle SN41G2
   - Integrated graphics adaptor, GeForce4 MX with 32/64/128MB mem
(configurable)
   - 512MB Crusader PC2100 memory (works best in synch mode)
   - Onboard nForce2 (RealTek ALC650) audio with optical SP/DIF port on the
front
   - Athlon XP1900+ cpu
OS:
   - Gentoo linux 1.4 rc2
   - Kernel 2.4.20 (gentoo patches, work OK with all my other patches so
far)
   - Freevo latest release version
   - Mplayer  || -
   - Nvidia nforce driver 1.02.56
Connected items:
   - Pioneer surround receiver w/ AC3/DD/PCM/MPEG decoder. Optical inputs
only.
   - Sony 32" 50Hz TV
1: The integrated graphics adaptor has a TV out that works beautifully in
BIOS and Windows XP. Under X11 using NVidias own drivers, I get a decent
picture (using SVHS and RGB signalling) but strangely enough the X11 driver
is locked to only the 'standard' resolutions of 800x600 & 640x480, both at
60Hz - none of which are proper TV resolutions at all, and while my TV does
display 60Hz signals as well as 50Hz, this is certainly not a PAL-B signal.
I've tried creating proper (well, what I consider proper anyway) modelines
for normal and overscan PAL modes (720x540 & 768x576 @ 50Hz) but the nvidia
drivers spat them out and reverted to 800x600, blatantly stating that "this
is not a valid TV mode" - uhh, come again?
Anyway, I did some digging around and noticed that the framebuffer device
seems much more configurable in terms of resolution and frequencies, so I
figured I'd look into this as an alternative to X11 - I won't be using the
box for normal X apps anyway.
Question one then is: has anyone successfully set up a geforce2/3/4 card
with TV-out using either the kernel-supplied rivafb or the directfb device
drivers, and if so how satisfied were you with the result?
2: I really want to get surround sound using the digital spdif sound out
(this was actually one of the determining parameters when I bought this
particular SFF). Again, this works beautifully in WinXP, but I am not really
satisfied with this under linux/freevo. In a nutshell, I have not been able
to get surround sound at all using the optical connector; specifying
6channels in mplayer options makes the digital sound flakey (disappears
entirely in some movies) and does not give me more than two channels on the
amp. Adding -surround=nn did not help the matter either.
Question two: Has anyone tested the alsa drivers with an nforce2 board and
spdif outputs and verified if this works? If it does then I'll grab the
source and compile the modules.
3: I wound up turning off the WID parameter for mplayer, as I could never
get both mpeg2 and avi files to play properly at once with a freevo-supplied
window. This helped a lot, but there is still a problem with avis not
playing back in the proper aspect ratio and so I was wondering if there was
some way of fixing this through lirc or similar..
Question three: Does mplayer provide a way of switching the aspect ratio of
a file through either keypresses or lirc after launching the file?
Alternatively, does freevo support a per-movie type of optional parameters
for mplayer (e.g. a config file in the movie dir that lets me specify source
aspect manually)?
Cheers,

Ole Andre Schistad

Yes, the drivers (== kernel modules) are missing.

Ok, this stinks. The computer I just put together for a Freevo/MythTV
box has a Radeon 7000 card. I'm not following what the problem is with
it. Do neither the Gatos nor XFree86 ATI drivers work?

No-one responded to my previous post[1]; it seems that the Radeon
supports SyncOnGreen via XF86. It seems like those VGA->Component
cables would fit the bill provided you can come up with a profile in the
XFree86 config file...

Yes, it was getting the desktop to the tv I was trying to do without
success. Actually it worked just fine on "static" graphic. Movies though
need some hw acceleration that I did not get to work on the tv-out :(

Otherways, for desktop use, the Radeon 7000 is great value/money (DVI,

Ok. If that means that the code for reading /tmp/freevo_record.lst is there
already, the "skin job" might not be such a big effort ?

I switched to the same skin as the screenshot (blue_round2) but the
statusbar didn't show up - I'll have a look at the src/ and see if I can
kick it into action myself. I haven't done any programming for years and
have zero knowledge about python, but I give it a try before I start to cry
for help... :-)

B.t.w, I saw the thread about the CD/(DVD?) ripping plugin: It would be nice
to have som kind of status/progress information for that in the status bar
too :)

don't really know about the state of the radeon and nvidia cards
(well...nvidia will at least need an X-Server), but having just configured
my old G400 to run with directfb, it might be an idea to get a Matrox G450
if you don't want to buy the G400 at ebay and are not afraid of some
handwork. but *be* aware that making directfb run is no work for linux
starters. it involves manual compilation with patching of the kernel and
several other things (see the wiki for that). you are likely to get more
than one headache from that if you don't have enough experience with linux
or unix. there was already a person on this list who gave up on the G450.
but the picture quality you get afterwards is top-notch and no X-Server is
needed. before consideration you should definately have a look at the wiki
and the matrox dfb howto which is linked from there to see whether
everything written there looks familiar. if not, you should only go for
this solution if you have the time and motivation to learn the things you
don't know...

concerning the radeon: i have a radeon mobility 9000 in my laptop and it
works pretty well with XFree. I can use -vo xv in mplayer without problems.
Maybe your problem is that you are using an out of date XServer? With at
least >=4.3 everything should work fine. Or are you somehow talking about
running the Xserver on the TV-out or something?

Yeah, that's normal. :-) I get it, too, at least.

Both the original and the sorted files report as
corrupted by freevo.
Check the TV_CHANNELS (?) config var. The awk script I used from the
wiki is broken and is missing a comma in the tuple between the first and
second items. Check that; I had a similar problem.

I figured tagging was a given. :-) I'm also assuming that support for
OGG tags are included?

[Freevo-users] tv-out once more...

2003-06-10 Thread pjernstr
Hi all,

As there has been a lot of discussion on tv-out lately I think it could
be appropriate with a short update.

Looks like the preferred card is THE Matrox G400 dh. The dxr3/hollywood+
gives good picture quality, but consumes unnecessary cpu on non mpeg1/2
material. The sad thing with both these cards is that they are
discontinued products.

The question is what to go for when buying new cards. I have a ATI
radeon 7000 with tv-out. Works ok by just plugging the tv before
booting, BUT I only got the video under x to work with "vesa". And that
was t slooow. So I guess nvidia is the only one currently to support
tv-out drivers.

The problem with nvidia is that there is a great amount of cards beeing
marked as for instance "MX440". Some have external videochips, others
integrated.

So the actual question is what card to buy, considering only tv-out (and
reasonable price <100Eur)?

thx,
Per

[Freevo-users] match_iso.group(1) error

2003-06-10 Thread Edward Povazan
Hello,

I am a bit of a linux newbie, but this doesn't seem right.
I am running Mandrake 9.1
I downloaded freevo-1.3.1.tar.gz
As root in folder /usr/local I ran
tar -xvzf freevo*
from the /usr/local/freevo-1.3.1 folder I ran ./configure which completed
without error.

Now, either running ./freevo or ./freevo setup gives me the following:
...
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "scr/main.py", line 90, in ?
import config
  File "src/config.py", line 316, in ?
mntdir = match_iso.group(1)
AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has not attribute 'group'

I looked at the source a little - I have no ISO9660 in the /etc/fstab, so
the regex doesn't match, and match_iso is None. Hmm, maybe this should be on
the developers list?
Anyone ever had this happen?

Thanks
-Ed
