Personally I think it would be reasonable to just leave out the igain
setting entirely. At least for my setup turning the igain down never
 really accomplishes anything.

I spent weeks experimenting with OSS drivers for my SB Live 5.1 and
finally gave up and switched to alsa because even though I could record
from tv with this fix, I never managed to get the centre speaker working
when watching a DVD. Switching to Alsa made things so much easier.
Because all the volume controls are labelled differently, there is no
IGain, and hence it's never set to 0.
 Have a look at
 http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=emu10k1
for info on the volume controls.

 Alsa is really worth it.

Yes. I also use alsa with my VIA chipset, but mostly because the mplayer
developers strongly recommend it. It seems that OSS doesn't help at all
mplayer synchronize the video to the sound (sync is done by playing the
sound, and asking the sound system the timing for the video. OSS doesn't
give this timing information, at least not the OSS-Lite which is in the
kernel. Alsa does, though).

And it seems that OSS uses 16 channel names for the mixer, to which ALSA
seems to map randomly its own channels when using OSS emulation. So the
channel I need to use for recording on my box is IGain, but the actual
ALSA channel used has nothing to do with gain or amplification (I don't
remember the name).

However, Freevo does not have support for ALSA mixer (yet), so you have
to use OSS emulation for the sound volume.

I don't think you have to use it.
Don't use alsa's OSS emulation, and use the normal lircd/irexec method
to set alsa voume if you really want to set something with your remote
control (personally I don't, I just adjust the volume on the speakers)

I didn't even know there was such a feature in lirc. But Freevo tries to
adjust the sound volume, and thus tries to use OSS. Actually, I need
freevo to play with the mixer, since I use the Line-In to listen to the
TV sound (no DSP on my TV card), and when Freevo is recording a program,
I don't necessarily want to hear the TV's sound. So I let freevo adjust
the Line-In channel when watching/recording TV. But otherwise, I also
use my amplifier's remote to change the volume, not Freevo.

Ok, then, I chose to give CVS a go.
A problem does arise: where can I find a 5.01 version of local_conf.py?
Because the 4.0 one that's included appears to be wrong. At startup, freevo
complains about versions mismatch (obviously) and enumerates the differences
between 4.0 and 5.01. The problem is that it shows some variables that are
changed, but that are not present in my file. How should I proceed?

Just change the version number in your local_conf.py to 5.01. It's
only a warning that stuff changed. Maybe start the helper to rename
the config variables.

Ok at fist i enabled this with the XINE_COMMAND = variable but found
out it is hardcoded. ;-) So i was already running with --no-lirc and
--stdctrl enabled. But there is something going on what i can't understand.

 See http://members.home.nl/r.winder/xine for logs.

Basicly lirc xine with DVD works ok but lirc events and avi files doesn't
seem to cooperate. Commands passed on to xine are fine and control is
given to freevo but there seem to be no eventhandler active for the lirc
events. I see some rc.set_context('video') stuff in mplayer.py and i wonder if
that has something do with it. Thinking out loud here, so bare with me.

It should work as it is, but I will look into it tomorrow. Do mpg
files work. AFAIK there are some divx out there that forces xine into
a deadlock.

It should work in current cvs -- maybe too good. If I read the code
correctly, it will always add all media. So it may happen that the
audio playlist conatins an image. I will fix that.

well not for me when i select play all/random/recursive there is no
'slideshow'. And this is with current cvs from a few ours ago.

Now it should work :-)

[Freevo-users] Re: Input Gain on SBLive

2003-12-02 Thread Scott Serr
I was unable to get good recordings with OSS/kernel drivers. (Big
crackles, I might not have known what mixer settings to use at that time)

ALSA made things work better. I was happy, but then I think setting
IGain to 1 sounds like it is over-driving a bit. ALSA's mixer for the
SBLive seems very confusing - there are so many bars. Using an OSS
mixer program with ALSA drivers was what finally worked for me. (I like
aumix, since I don't have X on the box)

I wondered if the emu10k1 driver on sourceforge was any better, but it
behaves the same way. Which I guess is good enough.

Has anyone been able to adjust the record level on a SB Live? What
driver and what mixer control?

Thanks,
-Scott

Loading cfg overrides: /etc/freevo/local_conf.py
config.py (562): Logging to /var/log/freevo/main-0.log

It doesn't find the crystal skin I put in /usr/share/freevo, and it seems
like something overrides my local_config.py, which might explain my problems
with the missing game item/double images items.

[Freevo-users] Date/time format in scheduled recordings

2003-12-02 Thread Richard van Paasen
How do I change the datetime format in the scheduled recordings list?
Currently it lists e.g.

Monday Dec 02 07:55 PM Veronica: Seindfeld
Wednesday Dec 03 07:55 PM Veronica: Seindfeld
Thursday Dec 04 07:55 PM Veronica: Seindfeld
I'd like it to change to:
 Mon 12-02 19:55 Veronica: Seindfeld
etc.
Also, it'd be nice to have colums in the list so that the date, channel
and program are aligned properly.

Are you trying to start it on the console or from X? Did you run 'freevo

Also, and recommended sites for basic training would be appreciated.

 Other points:

 1) The suggested replacement for dvdinfo.py uses the mplayer
dvd://1000 command, however, my version of mplayer requires
the title be between 0-99. Hence, I needed to modify this to
dvd://99. This however didn't change the behavior.

 2) I backed out the dvdinfo.py change to the original, and the
original crash problem disappeared. However, I still only
have access to video_ts which is the first title. I don't
know why the crash problem when away. I did install
libdvdread, but continue to use the runtime.
