I want to get something that will hold alot but I want very good quality. What quality would you suggest? You should try that for yourself. In my opionion, MPEG4 with a bitrate of 1800kBit/s and 384x288 pixels is quite a good compromise between space and quality. To reach a really good quality, you can not encode MPEG4 while recording. IMHO, really good encoding quality is only reached by a two pass encoding. I am thinking about recording with mjpeg (720x576) and wav. These recordings should have really good quality, but huge file sizes. Afterwards, these files could be transcoded to mpeg4, 1000kBit/s (or even lower) in 2-pass encoding. It should be possible to setup an automatic process which does this. Perhaps someone has done something like this already? One solution is to modify the Shutdown plugin to program a shutdown in the future, but without actually shuting down the interface. [Freevo-users] freevo on SDL+directfb multi-application core, german TV listings
Hi folks, freevo is great, I'm playing around with it when I find the time, since the 1.3.x versions, congratulations to the developers! I'm planning to build a freevo on gentoo based htpc, with no XFree86 atr all on that box, it must run only connected to the TV in the end. I'm using version 1.4.1 with directfb 0.9.20 (and, sorry, I forgot the SDL version I'm using, 'cause I'm at work right know, will post that too if it matters) compiled with multi-application support, everything compiled from gentoo ebuilds and my Matrox G400 DH gives me a brilliant image on TV. So far, I'm using mplayer for movies, DVDs and audio (unfortunately Xine does not support directfb 0.9.20, I pray that will change soon), and the ivtv-plugin for viewing TV on my PVR250 (didn't manage to setup recording yet, but I know it's working, I cand cat /dev/video0 recorded_file.mpg). Now I've got 2 major problems (beside recording, which I will address after I manage the TV-listings stuff): 1. Every time freevo starts the ivtv-viewer, or mplayer, the screen horribly flickers on my TV until freevo releases the directfb display and the other application comes in, and the same on going back. I still have my monitor connected on the first head of the Matrox card ( right now the box is still a desktop) and the same strange flickering is happening on the monitor console during these switches. Now, I have compiled directfb for multi-application support (enabled fusion stuff in the kernel). Is it possible to configure freevo not to leave the display when starting the other applications and thus avoid that flickering? I mean, it's meant to be a htpc box, I think no one would buy a DVD player or a set top box if it would flicker like that and all the time set the same resolution (720x576, PAL) over and over again during operation. 2. I've set up my TV_CHANNELS whith IDs taken from the /tmp/TV.xml which I download with the tv-today script for german listings (I think nextvepg is out of question on an ivtv card), and xmlTV is not working anyway), and I can start the ivtv viewer plugin on the highligted channel from the View TV list in freevo (I kept the cable frequencies from my old bttv card, and they work). The EPG list shows the correct display-names of the channels, but all of them just show This channel has no data loaded. And as someone posted in another thread, very strange, below the list, at the left side, a strange date 1-Jan 0:00 - 4:41 which makes me assume that freevo didn't parse the TV.xml file at all... I even sanitized the TV.xml through tv_sort, but with the same result. What am I doing wrong with the EPG stuff? Please tell me what other information I should provide... The example scripts that are available don't appear to actually be scripts (don't start with #!...) so I don't know how it use them. There is a record script, but I don't know how it implement it. Re: [Freevo-users] problems with freevo and Hauppauge PVR350 TV-Out (plus SPDIF audio)
For your audio u need to set: MPLAYER_AO_DEV = 'alsa9:spdif' and use the: MPLAYER_ARGS_DEF -ac hwac3, switch (with the ,) to get ure spdif output working. If u have ure modules loaded correctly see alsa-project.org. Also set ure /dev/dsp right or use oss compatible module (snd-pcm-oss and snd-oss-mixer) That should fix your sound problems. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, February 02, 2004 11:51 PM Subject: [Freevo-users] problems with freevo and Hauppauge PVR350 TV-Out (plus SPDIF audio) Hi, I'm on my way building my own HTPC. As I won't be able to build the full-blown wish-system in the near future (DVB-S server in the cellar, streaming to the clients in the rooms), I started with a client. I have to begin with an analog tv I decided to use freevo as I like its overall concept better than the other solutions. As the system will be in the living room only the TV should be attached, no keyboard, commands only via IR. hardware: Shuttle SB61G2, P4 2.6, 1 GB, 160 GB HDD on-board Intel Extreme Graphic 2 with opt. TV-Out on-board sound i810 with SPDIF out Hauppauge PVR 350 software: knoppix 3.3 , kernel 2.4.22, linux-wlan-ng-0.2.1-pre16, ivtv-0.19, lirc-0.7.0pre2, alsa-driver-1.0.2a freevo 1.41 binary install I installed knoppix, compiled the kernel, added the modules and freevo. With the monitor attached to VGA I got nearly everything working, but freevo does not show up on the TV screen. (problem one) This could be the reason: Feb 2 21:31:36 media kernel: ivtv-fb does not support changing the video mode Feb 2 21:31:36 media modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-10-32 Feb 2 21:31:36 media modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-10-32 but I've no idea and nothing found what can solve the issue. :-( I probably missing only a small thing. (problem two: I've connected SPDIF out to my amplifier, set in alsamixer Master a. PCM to 74, IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA to 0 but I don't get any sound output when playing something with mpg123 -o alsa.) ivtv: I can watch tv with mplayer and I get a test screen on the TV.
