[Freevo-users] nvidia driver improvements!

2006-05-20 Thread Karl Lattimer
For those who aren't aware and are using nvidia cards with TV-output the
new nvidia drivers see one incredible improvement (as I've just
discovered).

The drivers are now capable of outputting a 1024x768 signal on TV, this
has been a limitation of the drivers for some time and now we can enjoy
high resolution freevo!

I have one episode of lost which is encoded in 1080i and even without a
HD output device this looks incredible! Also using tvtime with the
deinterlacers at max (~900 lines) looks far superior even over
composite!

I'm happy, I thought I'd let everyone know about this it just makes it a
little better all round. I can't wait for fv2 now, but with the lack of
tvtime in fv2 the tv quality will probably be a bit lower ;( (maybe
dischi has a retort about that, I hope he can prove me wrong)

K,

A wiki note has been added for this.

Well the TV itself isn't _really_ capable of it, but if you've ever used
a nvidia card in windows and have a fairly recent TV you'll see it does
a cracking job of getting a high quality picture out on a standard idiot
box. My TV has 712 lines (if i remember right which i probably don't ;)
as its SVHS, I could be wrong but it looks wicked eitherway!

legacy how? I have a geforce mx4400 in my freevo, I don't know about
older cards although I expect anything that can do this in windows will
also be able to do it in linux now.

I don't grok how this can possibly provide superior output to running
the card at the TV's native vertical resolution and using software
scaling (in mplayer, say).

712 lines? That doesn't sound right. :) If you've a hdtv then it's
either 720 or 1080 lines, I suppose. PAL would be 576 lines and NTSC
480 lines.

I have been doing this for a couple years with the nVidia drivers. This
is not a new feature. Thats why I was complaining that the CVS version
was stuck at 800x600 forever. People are correct that the TVs physical
limit is less than this, but the difference between 800x600 and 1024x768
is very noticeable, especially when working with high quality video.

I could believe that because of some implementation detail of hardware
scaling (which is not very high quality, at least in my GF440MMX -- it's
about the same quality as my settop DVD player) it ends up looking
better when the card is run at 1024x768. (Possibly there are separate
paths for video overlay scaling and scaling for tv-output, and the
latter is better quality.) But I simply can't fathom why that would
yield better quality than running a card at 640x480 (on NTSC) and using
software scaling (bicubic interpolation or possibly lanczos).

In fact if anyone claims otherwise I'll simply refuse to believe it
until I get a good explanation. :)

The proof is in the pudding, and it is without a doubt better looking,
give it a try if you can, you will see a difference. I rip all my DVDs
at their native resolution and the difference is enough that I have gone
out of my way to make sure that all my freevo boxes run no less then
1024x768. Anyone who has a card capable of 1024x768 should really try it.

also,

Heres a link to the PDF for the original nVidia Linux driver from 2001,
it shows 1024x768 as an options for TV out back then.

You must have faith my child.

;)

It _IS_ better quality, possibly because nvidia have done some good work
on stabilising the video at that resolution, now I'm not saying I can
read ordinary text at that resolution, but its bloody good quality. I
don't think its simply a question of the pixel clarity of a TV, remember
that the TV tube is analogue control, therefore it is possible that
their is some subpixel hinting applied by the cram, ram, packed composite
signal.

I'd liken that effect to using a sharpen filter in an image editor after
scaling up a picture.

Ok, I gave it a try, and I see no improvement with 'mplayer dvd:// -fs'
at 1024x768 over 'mplayer dvd:// -vf scale=640:-2 -fs' at 640x480. I
looked very carefully and at several different types of scenes. I also
compared a PAL DVD rip which is 560 lines.

It simply makes sense that I wouldn't see an improvement. The limitation
here is my television. It only has about 480 lines of visible
resolution.

In fact, I saw that the former has the same crappy scaling quality
(moire patterns) which is not present with mplayer's bicubic scaling.

Me too. Ripping a DVD at a lower resolution is a unforgivable sin.
Almost as much as transcoding AC3 5.1 to mp3.

Maybe your TV/video card is really crappy? I've got a reasonably new

checking my wiring I'm using an SVHS not composite for the FV-TV.
