[Freevo-users] Freevo vs XBMC vs Boxee

2011-02-23 Thread Bill Burroughs
Hi all,

I had been using Freevo for almost 4 years until about 4 months ago - I got a
720p TV, and as my Freevo box wasn't powerful enough to decode 720p, I bought
myself a cheap little (Argosy) media box. Needless to say, losing the ability
to customise things has got more and more annoying over the last 4 months, and
I'm now so frustrated with it, and so underwhelmed by 720p, that I'm giving up
on it. My freevo box is still in only a few pieces (4 months is a long time
to
go without opening up an unused piece of hardware), so won't take me long to
throw it back together, and I was thinking of just wiping the HD, and
installing OS and freevo from scratch.

Obviously, as I'm doing that, I have the opportunity to choose a different OS
and different media player, and I've been looking at XBMC and Boxee. From
what
I've seen XBMC is the better choice from a OSS perspective, and seems to be
very customisable. The question is, why choose Freevo over XBMC? I know
under
normal circumstances a question like this to an OSS mailing list will end up
in
an endless stream of flames, and in those situations I would normally
sirupticiously defect without anyone knowing or caring. However, I've found
the Freevo lists to be very friendly and fair over the years, so I thought I
would throw it out to an open conversation to see what happened.

From a usage perspective, I don't record TV at all, New Zealand TV is pretty
rubbish (unless you like 24/7 rugby and Australia's next top singing
sheepdog
shows), and forces me to have to download UK and USA TV programmes from the
usual sources. Thus, all my content comes from SMB shares, with the odd net
radio station. One very handy feature I've seen for XBMC is a latest
download
episodes script/plugin, which would save a great number of arguments between
my better half and I.

Anyway, let me know what you all think, but be gentle... :)

Cheers
DJM23

P.S. In case it matters, I would describe my python skills as George W Bush
Jnr, i.e. clueless, but my linux, windows and perl/php skills are  pretty good;
and it hasn't stopped me from being able to hack freevo to do whatever I want.

Nothing is true; Everything is permissible...

G'day,

What specs are the machine you're running on? My Freevo box doesn't do HD
content at all, just plays really slowly, like it is having a really hard time
processing it all.

Ciao a tutti,

I have another problem: I can see really fine .avi and listen .mp3, .ogg
but trying to see .mkv and .mp4 files the result is impossible because
the video is really slow and not synchronized with audio.

I tried to adjust something copying the line for .avi in local_conf.py
also for .mkv and .mp4 and the result is the audio and video goes
together but really slow!

These are lines added in local_conf.py

'mkv': '-cache 5000 -idx',
'mp4': '-cache 5000 -idx',

How could I resolve?

Re: [Freevo-users] Restarting from an MCE remote when mplayer freezes

2010-09-11 Thread Bill Burroughs
Hi John,

Cheers for your speedy response. Funnily enough I was on that wiki page just
last night, as I was looking at adding it as a mapping in my xmodmap, but I'm
not sure what to map it to - I had hoped Ctrl-Alt-Del would have done it, so
added the following:

keycode 70 = Control_L Alt_L Delete

The power button on the remote does a Ctrl-F4, keycode 70 is the F4 part of
that, and it works fine if I remap it to kp_subract (i.e. volume down), for
instance, but does nothing with the mapping above. I don't think the
Ctrl-Alt-Del is sysrq thingy is setup on my machine, as I vnc'd in and tried
that, along with a bunch of other random key combinations to see if I could get
it to reboot, and no joy.

Also via VNC, I've tried all manner of Alt-SysRq-Shift-b, Alt-SysRq-b, adding
in
Ctrl, etc., but no joy there either...

Oh, but on a positive note, after a bit of permission fiddling, the following
does do a reboot:

echo b /proc/sysrq-trigger

This would suggest the sysrq stuff works alright, I just need to work out how
to
send the signal from the keyboard/remote.

Once again, thanks so much for any help regarding this - we're watching more
and
more FLVs on Freevo these days, and my gf is getting fed up when it is her turn
to walk over to the tv and reboot the box. :)

Cheers
Ronan

 Hi all,

I'm hoping this is an easy one - some FLV files downloaded from youpube make
mplayer freeze on me. The only way to fix it is a reboot (i.e. pressing the
power button on the front of the machine to get xubuntu to shut down, then
after
20-30 secs, press it again to start up).
Ouch.
I'm hoping I can do the same thing
from my remote, which is a standard MCE remote - i.e. it just sends keyboards
signals. I've tried getting it to send Ctrl-Alt-Del (and tried the same from
a
proper keyboard) and that didn't work. I'm guessing its an OS thing I need to
work on, but any guidance greatly appreciated. :)

 Evan

Yes, using an IRBlaster and the cable company box has allowed me to
continue using my Freevo system for recording TV programs. However,
this kludge is not 100% reliable. Sometimes, one of the digits is
missed (e.g., 189 becomes 18 or 89) and, although recording starts at
the correct time, the wrong channel's program is recorded. Other
times, it seems LIRC isn't working correctly and no new channel is
tuned via the IRBlaster, so the recording starts at the right time,
but for the previously tuned (default) channel so, again, the wrong
program is recorded. In the latter situation, I have to reboot my
system so LIRC can load correctly. I don't know if the problem is
with LIRC, the script, the IRBlaster, or the cable box. Probably each
of those at some time or another. That's why I was hoping to
eliminate all these variables by getting a new card with clear QAM
support so the TV card itself can tune to the correct station without
dependency on other devices and software. Unfortunately, my cable
company's decision to remove most of the channels on their line-up
from clear QAM has thwarted my plans.

My rough guess is that it's 95%+ reliable, but it's very frustrating
when there's a special program I want (worse yet, a program that my
wife really wants) and it's the very one that records incorrectly.
Life was much simpler before the cable company switched to digital
signals and you could have your TV or TV card tune to the correct
channel without being forced to use their box.

You could try following the instruction I posted on the wik... dang... I
take that back, I haven't had any time to post on the wiki. :-\ Maybe
next time I'm sick, I'll sit in front of the computer type.

I have terrible times with Ubuntu, every other time I reboot I have to
service lirc restart and then service freevo_xserver restart just to get
it to work. That's in addition to a bug that prevented lirc from
working right in the first place. Probably should have done Debian.
And heaven help you if you use tv.ivtv_xine_tv - xine is always crashing!

I modified irsend_generic.py; with simple modifications, it works pretty
well. Better than my Tivo did. My post was Ubuntu Lirc Bug / Dish
Network how to if you want to mess around with adding a delay between
digits, you may find that helpful.

[Freevo-users] Changing the sort order for a specific directory

2010-02-13 Thread Bill Burroughs
Hi all,

This is probably an easy one; all I want to do is change the sort ordering of a
single directory to being in date order instead of filename - basically it's my
incoming or dump them in there and deal with them later directory. I'm
hoping it's as simple as dropping a FXD file in the directory or the main conf
file. If it ain't easy, if you could point me in the direction of which python
file I need to hack, that would be great.

[Freevo-users] Volume control for 5.1 surround sound

2007-04-25 Thread Bill Burroughs
Hi all,

I've just upgraded from a 2.0 sound card to a 5.1 (CMI8738 using cmipic under
alsa). Sound works great, but when I use the M/N keys to change volume, it
only changes the levels for the front channels.

Bits of my local_conf.py that you might be interested in:

Let me know if you want any more settings.

I'm happy to have the volume control just cover the master volume.

Any assistance on the -af pan settings would be greatly appreciated aswell.
