Subject: [Freevo-users] Freevo And integration of VLC

Hi All,
Has anyone on this list been able to get VLC intergrated into Freevo? I
am currently running Freevo as a set-top box and set-up a separate
server box running VLC and acting as a VoD server.

Hi,

I-ll go slightly off topic and point you to another project that is trying
to acomplish same as you. They have VLC in role of streaming server and
client, but do have quite some problems controling it over remote control
interface...

www.plutohome.org

HTH,

regards,

Rob.

Right now, VLC is using RTSP protocol (Live.com media streaming
implementation protocol) and xine does not support it. Even though
Mplayer is said to support it, but according to the Mplayer and
live.com's devel, it's support is broken. (Hence I can't use neither
mplayer nor xine to play the VLC VoD Streams)

Per freevo-archive, Dirk Meyer had this to say

[quote]
So why not vlc? First of all, I couldn't get it running. Second: every
new player (vlc, gstreamer, whatever) takes time to integrate into
Freevo. I don't have that time. So _I_ will only integrate two
programs: mplayer and xine. But this two will be integrated with
freevo having _full_ control over the stream and freevo drawing on top
of the video. So this is more important to me than supporting every
player. But if someone whats to help, I would accept vlc patches.
[/quote]

So, since this is a feature which I would like to have, I'm willing to
put up a bounty for it. If there are interest, please email me offline
to work out the details.

Thanks for the great work thus far on freevo.

Hi,

I don't know if it's maintained but there existed fork from xmms for not
using X. But can't remember where or when I saw that site... Maybe asking on
their list would help.

Re: [Freevo-users] Newbie python: problems with try except

2004-04-06 Thread Robert Rozman
Hi,

I'd kindly ask for some obviously newbie guidance here:

I have a code:
-
 self.time = time.time()
HOST = '192.168.0.14'# The remote host
PORT = 8083 # The same port as used by the server

 s = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM)
 try:
 s.connect((HOST, PORT))
 except:
print "Error communicating with TINIA server - Is it running ?"
  input = "?"
 else:
 s.send('state $Office_Motion_sensor\n')
 input = s.recv(1024)
 s.close()

 self.motion = " %s" % (input[:-2])
 print "Got response: %s \n" % (input[:-2])

--
Now if MH server is not active on this port, Freevo crashes with "Connection
refused" on s.connect statement.
I must be oding sometyhing worng - shouldn't try statement catch this error
and prevent Freevo from crashing ?

Thanks,

Robert.

That's the problem . I assume from this code that this would hapen. But
Freevo crashes on this one with (couldn't connect to ... (I don't have MH
running so connection is refused) shows this error ion black screen and
shuts down in few seconds. It seems like major Freevo catching exceptions
code caught this one instead of local try except commands ? This code is
located in idlebar plugin.

[Freevo-users] Newbie python: problems with try except

2004-04-01 Thread Robert Rozman
Hi,

I'm trying to connect Freevo to Misterhouse over TCP port. I have :
HOST = '192.168.0.14'# The remote host
PORT = 8083 # The same port as used by the server

s = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM)
 try:
 s.connect((HOST, PORT))
 except:
print "Error communicating with TINIA server - Is it running ?"
 input = "?"

--
If tcp connection cannot be established (s.connect ), Freevo crashes,
but I'd like to intercept that condition with try except commands.
What am I doing wrong ?

Robert.

Re: [Freevo-users] just wondering

2004-03-15 Thread Robert Rozman
Maybe this would be easier achieveable in Alsa. I have for instance 6
channel sound card, I just set duplicate tick in gnome-alsamixer and voila -
same sound goes to two separated outputs on sound card. Similar could be
done with 2 cards, but since I'm alsa newbie, you better ask this on alsa
mailing list...

Maybe also ecasound or some similar software mixing program could help
you...

I've implemented such a feature as a separate server (but using Freevo
modules). It also program my external timer (planned and designed, but
yet to be built :) for the next automatic wakeup (based on the scheduled
recordings) and monitors the remote control inputs (if a user presses a
button, automatic shutdown is disabled until the user chooses shutdown
in the main menu). When the user chooses shutdown, it might actually
delay the system shutdown until there is nothing more to record on TV,
and it's safe to shutdown.

And while it is also monitoring the remote control, it reacts on the
user pressing the TV/Video button, which switches the source for the TV
(either antenna or freevo).

But if you get asleep in front of your TV, it won't shutdown
automatically (because it doesn't detect if someone is actually doing
something or not).

It's not yet ready, and depends on (soon-to-be) home-made hardware, but
if someone is interested...

[Freevo-users] Example configuration for working pvr 350 & alsa Freevo system

2003-12-26 Thread Robert Rozman
Hi,

has anyone written any howto for getting pvr 350 and alsa to work under
Freevo? I get just blank screeen when I try to watch TV and I don't know
which mixer device to setup to work with alsa?

Thanks

Robert.

"Voicemail client" was:[Freevo-users] positive feedback ;)

2003-12-21 Thread Robert Rozman
Hi,

I still remember feature that me and my wife particularly liked on 3com
Audrey (touchscreen qnx computer that was aimed at our kitchen). It had
simple mail client that was able to deal with ordinary wav files as email
attachments. And when sending mail, you could simply record your voice
message and that message was send with wav attachment. Same happened when
you received such mail, it kindly asked you to play that message. Since I'm
thinking of having webcam and micropohone on Freevo box (for video
conference with friends) that could be nice feature add. Just listen and
record your emails by voice. Much easier than typing on remote...

Hope this could give some idea to someone,

Regards,

Robert.

Hi,

I've done debug to 1 in plugin.py and first one stops in media.video.mplayer

It just sits there and does nothing.

How can I debug that one ?

Re: [Freevo-users] tvtime: slave mode remote control problem

Hi,

I see the problem is probably that tvtime takes focus and also keypresses
from Freevo.
Any solution to this problem ?

[Freevo-users] tvtime: slave mode remote control problem

2003-11-25 Thread Robert Rozman
Hello,

I'm trying to use tvtime for TV vieweing. But it only starts, then doesn't
understand any commands I'm giving it to him.

Do I have to add "tvtime/events" in localconf. pl to properly control
tvtime or not ?

Re: [Freevo-users] Startup problems

2003-11-25 Thread Robert Rozman
Hi,

thanks. Well the statement I gave was just read at "ps ax" output. And I
tried it and it looked suspicious.

Otherwise I start Freevo with normal "./freevo" script and it stops at
described points (freezes better said) with no particular trace of error.
And this remains my unsolved problem.

Is there anything I can do to get some more info from Freevo when starting
up with progress bar ?

Robert.

Re: [Freevo-users] Recording Scheduler

2003-11-08 Thread Robert Rozman
Hello,

my thoughts are compatible with your setup. I like Perl ugly code and I'm
interested in multiple frontends and single database setup and also mixed OS
setup (Linux being on main server ;-) ). I also have an idea of featured
backend -in my case this will be Misterhouse that is already handling my
home automation stuff.

So I'm really interested in your setup and would like to have some more info
(also Perl code and steraming code for Freevo would be more than helpful)...

Thanks,

regards,

Robert.

[Freevo-users] Server/Client for Freevo

2003-10-30 Thread Robert Rozman
Hello,

I've seen your post on Freevo mailing list. I'm thinking about the same by
myself but have slightly different view. I'm also happy user of Misterhouse
(www.misterhouse.com) open source integrated home automation system that is
already greatly extended toward being also multimedia, info and data server
for home environment. So in my view I'll try to use Misterhouse as backend
for recording, retriveing data, maybe data base connection, and all other
home automation stuff. I thought of Freevo like being frontend connected
over TCP port to Misterhouse (latter already has "proxy" concept
implemented - that means connection of one main Misterhouse and other
lighter clients...).

For media streaming I think that vls/vlc combination is best at the moment
for this kind of job (www.videolan.org) cause in this way you can stream
files, web cameras and even TV through LAN to clients. In this scenario
Freevo could use vlc (it's also very popular) as player that can play local
files, DVDs or streamed files over LAN (that can be webcam, live TV, DVDs or
stored files on server...). I somewhere read that with some patches also
mplayer can play streamed video from Videolan programms.

Christophe is porting Freevo to win32 has already made vlc plugin (some time
ago there was also some linux code for this) so transfer could not be too
hard.

I don't know much about your work, how far are you, but maybe taking
advantage of some already available open solutions wouldn't be bad.

I hope this helps a little bit and I'm loooking forward to discuss on that.

Regards,

Robert.

[Freevo-users] Shortcuts between main menu groups

2003-10-23 Thread Robert Rozman
Hello,

I'm newbie and would like to ask whether is possible to move from for
instance Video menu tree directly to some other main menu group and then
come back. Sometimes one sets music to play and would then like to go to
other menus and return to set another music. Going through all those menu
trees takes some time. I've seen GUIs that have shortcut bar on one side,
where user can promptly switch to last place in some other menu group...

Is this possible to do with Freevo, and where to start ?

Thanks in advance,

Robert Rozman.

Hello,

I'm also thinking about mouse. Is there any specific obstacle of doing it ?
In TK it's only addition of few commands to buttons and that's it ..

Robert.

Re: [Freevo-users] Where does CONF.mplayer come from ?

2003-10-12 Thread Robert Rozman
Hello,

sorry it was my mistake. I was changing mplayer in audio and testing mplayer
as video plugin. Maybe it wouldn't it be bad to give them different names.

Freevo now seems to be working with basic features (also video), but it
seems like win32 doesn't like slave mode - it's really slow under this.
We'll work on that.

Thanks,

Robert.

[Freevo-users] Where does CONF.mplayer come from ?

2003-10-12 Thread Robert Rozman
Hello,

I'm playing with Freevo under win32 and according to Christophe instructions
I could get Image and Audio working. Now I'm playing with Video. There seems
that --prio statement is coming in front of mplayer.exe for somewhere but I
don't know from where...

In local_conf.py is line :
MPLAYER_CMD = CONF.mplayer

But where is CONF.mplayer defined ?

Regards,

Robert.

Thanks for help.

For now, I'm probably on of very few users of Freevo in Slovenia, but I'm
sure that it will propagate among our people. As soon as I will know Freevo
better will do that - no problems...

Where is this mapping taking place ? Could this problem be solved with

[Freevo-users] Embedded TV or webcam screen

2003-10-01 Thread Robert Rozman
Hello,

I wonder what are possibilities and starting points to embed TV or webcam
screen into Freevo menus. With this we could leave TV on ,when doing some
other things (like PIP) or browse channels with live output, or take a look
at frontdoor webcam who is at the door

Any advice, help, links ?

Robert.

Can you send me some example output from your grabber? Or the grabber
itself?

[Freevo-users] Mplayer and tvtime on half width screen with 2 pictures one in another ?

2003-09-21 Thread Robert Rozman
Hello,

I'm Linux newbie and would like to ask probably simple question. I have
installed Freevo, mplayer and tvtime. I left settings more or less in
default state. I get TV screen displayed (same with mplayer and tvtime) on
half width with two halves of pictures one in another. I'm running
EPIA-M9000 board with original VIA drivers and xv output.

Any advice, help ?

Thanks in advance,

Robert.

[Freevo-users] Debugging problems with tv.xml file

2003-09-21 Thread Robert Rozman
Hello,

I'm from Slovenia and I wrote custom perl script for generating XMLTV
compatible file for Freevo. This file has been sucessfully used in some
other XMLTV compatible applications, but not under Linux and Freevo. It
displays just empty EPG.

How and where could I find out what's happening inside xml parsing in Freevo
?

Will Freevo handle ISO - 8859-2 characters ?

Regards,

Robert.

Re: [Freevo-users] windows

2003-09-17 Thread Robert Rozman
Hi,

I also think in this direction. I'm designing cross platform home
automation/entertainment system and it would be nice to make Freevo
crossplatform. At least core GUI, some time ago I tried this, but no luck.
Maybe it's time to try again. It could go in two directions:
- plain Freevo source and windows counterparts of dependincies (recently I
downloaded windows components and 3-4 are missing windows counterparts...)
- to go with cygwin (linux like environment under windows) and compiling
dependencies.

In both cases we should find media player equivalents (should be open
source). For audio there is maybe winamp, foobar2000, for video mazbe xine
for win32 or other...

I think it would be worth, cause in windows domain there is currently no
equivalent open source GUI frontend media engine as Freevo is. Since it's
based on python, it would be nice to take advantage of that.

Another example of success story is Misterhouse (I use it for home
automation layer in my system). It's Perl based, oepn source and it's
reported to work almost on any machine with Perl...

That's what I think the main advantage of Freevo is. I'm closely watching
development of similar GUIs in windows, but no one is going to be open
source - the best you get is plugin system. myHTPC is nice, but it's closed
source and may be commercial some day... Some other promising programs like
MediaBox simply ended (source was not opened to public, lack of money and
lack of development), etc...

So I think one day we should present Freevo to all those people waiting for
myHTPC2 and I think a lot of them will be learning python... When you use
python, much bigger group of peopel can contribute (this is certainly case
with Misterhouse...)

Regards,

Robert Rozman

[Freevo-users] Freepia: media on hard disk ?

2003-06-13 Thread Robert Rozman
Hello,

I have problems with Freepia 3.5. I have modified config file to read media
files from hard disk but Freevo just quits after start. Then I tried to
verify mountings but root user is not recognized on login (password is
"root" according to manuals).

Has anyone working example of config file or has managed to login as root ?

Thanks in advance,

Robert Rozman.
