I need some help. As some might know i am developping Encodingserver (wich is

capable) encoding and transcoding capabilities. Currently it's geared towards
encoding dvd's and dvd-on-hd's. But as i lack NTSC dvd's (only pal stuff), i
need some help from ntsc users. I need output of mplayer (v 1.0_pre3 please)
playing NTSC dvd's (main title), so if somebody could pop an ntsc dvd in
their drive , play the main title for a few seconds and then mail me (not the
list) everything mplayer dumped to stdout, it would be very much

Laat de nederlandse versie je steenkoud of heb je ze broodnodig? Laat hier een

There are some other problems. Like xmltv should be optional in the USE

 Others:

Would be nice to have so you didn't find out you needed/wanted them at

Well, u can read the DTD or make an example fxd file with freevo and copy/edit

have to learn some Python to use fxdimdb.py, or u'll have to implement a imdb

My 0.02 ecents on the configuration topic.

As xml is as friendly as python code to end users, it doesn't really matter
wich format the config file has. It does matter how good the config interface
is. (btw, python configs are much handiert for devloppers then an xml format
imho).

I would strongly suggest writing a configuration application in python,
because python knows how to parse python :). Look op your python library
reference, section 18 Python laguage services. it includes a python parser
etc. I don't know how usefull this is, but it could help a lot.

In xml, it is easy to indicate the contents (using the DTS) of the file,
and with that information, it would be easy to parse it. By python and by
 an Pearl/html web config.

 What do you think?

Subject: RE: [Freevo-users] Re: Developers, can I help? Please read

Well Using a web based interface would be a great idea. But I am then
sure it would not have to be python. It could just as easily be perl.
Plus the graphical element can be done using html.

I could propose that we could use the comment sign as a form of tag for
a script to look for then replace the whole string rather than just one
  perticular word. Ie.

  #DIR_MOVIES_BEG
  DIR_MOVIES = [ ('foo', '/mnt/foo'),
  ('bar', /mnt/bar' )
  #DIR_MOVIES_Finish
  ]
  #DIR_MOVIES_END

It would then replace the text betweek the _BEG _Finish tags
With what ever text is needed. The only problem would be the comma.

Ovbously this would be easy if there were just one line.
But once you have to use two or more then you would need to get the
programme to remember what text was there before, then add a line ie
,('Mtr', '/mnt/Mtr') which would help with the comma problem providing
it is not the first in the sentence.

Do you think this is any good or could it be more complicated than it is
  worth?

Also I have taken a look at some pyton code, and it seems prety simple,
it also looks very similar to good old basic.

But I think I will play around with editing text within the .py when I
get home from work. And see what I can do.

But I totally agree using the web interface would be simpler. You just
have to get a script to pick out the information and create a form. Then
once the options have changed make those changes (and create a backup).

Altho I am only realy used to ASP VB.Net ect. I can pick up most

Python is very easy if you know other languages.

As far as I can see, with most languages it is easy to add and remove
Text in an ASCII file, and as a .py is just that then that should be
   easy.

Yes, but the parser needs to be more complex, it has to know the python
  syntax, e.g.:

  DIR_MOVIES = [ ('foo', '/mnt/foo'),
 ('bar', /mnt/bar' )
  ]

This is one entry, if you change the variable in the config tool, you
must count the braces, and you should know about comments:

  DIR_MOVIES = [ ('foo', '/mnt/foo'),
  #]
 ('bar', /mnt/bar' )
  ]

the second line doesn't exist, but

  DIR_MOVIES = [ ('foo', '/mnt/foo#'),
 ('bar', /mnt/bar' )
  ]

this time the # is inside a string.

Most things would be list box's and check box's and Tabs for the
   different sections within the config.

Let's do a quick brainstorm what you need for this:

o each variable needs a description and a topic (e.g. video, audio,
mplayer). It would be hard to parse this out of the
freevo_config.py, but you (and we) could create a file with all
infos you need, some sort of meta information. Or we can think of a
way to structure the freevo_config.py so that you can parse it, e.g.

## Section: mplayer

# sets mplayer output device
MPLAYER_VO_DEV = 'x11'

You could grep for '## Section:' and a comment above a variable.

o Plugins may have variables not in freevo_config.py. But they have a
function config() to describe the needed stuff (at least some have
now)

o You can get a list of plugins with the plugins helper script.

Conclusion: it would be great to have a config tool. Inside Freevo may
be too hard, because you can't type text directly, but you could use the
internal webserver. If you know some html, you can write python files
for the webserver to do the configuration. Everything the user needs to
do before he can use your tool would be starting 'freevo setup' and add

 Hi,

I just updated the init start script for Freevo when you use

placed as /etc/conf.d/freevo is gentoo-conf.d. Please convert this
script for Debian and to chkconfig for SuSE and RedHat and send it to
 the list.

 What's the great about it?

We have three differeny kinds of computer running Freevo:
 1. A HTPC, running Freevo all the time. Freevo should pop up on
startup.
 2. A PC running Freevo but also running 'normal' sessions to work.
 3. A PC only for recording. The webserver and recordserver are running
there.

Based on what PC you have, you can set the variables in
/etc/conf.d/freevo. Since I already wrote comments in this file, I
 only copy it here:

 # Mode to start Freevo itself. Possible values are
 #
 # no: don't start Freevo
 # yes:start Freevo on startup. You should only use this when the
 # computer is for Freevo only or you use Freevo with a DXR3
 # daemon: start Freevo in daemon mode. The daemon will wait for you to
 # press QUIT or POWER on your remote and will than start
 # Freevo. After Freevo shut down, the daemon will wait again.
 #
 # You don't need a X server running to start Freevo from init. If
 # needed, Freevo will start a X server on its own. Make sure your X
 # server can handle the resolution defined in /etc/freevo/freevo.conf

 freevo=no

 # Mode the start the webserver. Possible values are again no and
 # yes. If you start the webserver with Freevo itself, you should say
 # no here.

 webserver=no

 # Mode the start the recordserver. Possible values are again no and
 # yes.

 recordserver=no

I tested this script with daemon and yes for display x11 and mga
(all the reboots, I felt like using Windows).

Expect the changes in the snapshots tomorrow (or when Aubin starts the
script before that). I will update the Gentoo ebuilds now, so merging
freevo-snapshot and mmpython-snapshot will bring you this feature for
 Gentoo.

 Dischi

I tested it (with scripts fetched directly from cvs, as they weren't in the
snapshot's yet apparantly) and it worked almost great. A few remarks:

- there's no export USER=root, wich will crash freevo if it isn't added (this
might be fixed already).

- xterm blanking isn't deactivated. I don't know if the script, or freevo in
auto-X mode is supposed to handle this.

- not related, but i use nvtv to setup my geforce, it doesn't work exactly
when specified in OSD_SDL_EXEC_AFTER_STARTUP. It seems like there is yet an X
mode switch or something similar after that is executed, and the settings are
erased (maybe this has to do with the splash screen?). I solved this with a
very dirty hack, i added sleep 10 nvtv -options in the startup script after
it starts freevo. So imho this is a timing issue.

Re: [Freevo-users] scanning directory, be patient...

2003-08-08 Thread den_RDC
Not entirely true i'am afraid. The issues i spoke of in an earlier post
occured with the kernel module ( mount -t smbfs ). Would using the CIFS
module work better or is still too experimental ? (those experimental flags
say nothing, devfs is also experimental but i neaver heard anyone
complaining).

Unless you compile in smbfs.o in the kernel and mount the drive. Then
your Linux box accesses Samba just like any other network filesystem.

Re: [Freevo-users] scanning directory, be patient...

2003-08-08 Thread den_RDC
I noticed a pretty similar behavior (large shares over samba shares
updating/caching very slow)... it alsa was about a 100g, but mostly big avi's
so there weren't more then 100-150 files to cache. I did notice that mmpython
cached avi's of japanese origin or so VERY slowly (half a minute or longer
per file). I guess it some character map/locale/codepage thing with
windows-linux... i think it's more a samba issue then an mmpython one. My
experience with samba is full of weird things.

Still, if somebody has any clue's, be my guest

If you're still having problems my guess is that one of your file is

Dont you get any info in the freevolog just before it crashes?

Re: [Freevo-users] 1.3.4 some findings.

2003-08-03 Thread den_RDC
I had the same error when starting freevo from the gentoo init script - this
break is caused by a very recent update to the freevo cvs-tree. i fixed it by
setting the environment var USER to root just before starting freevo, like
this :
export USER=root

It fixes things for now.

Fantastic A/V sync and only 60% cpuload, with mplayer it was hitting

 But..

When freevo is started from runlevel 3, hence without a user mmpython
crashes: Not sure if this is a bug or a feature. ;-) It did work with

Blurr theme got Arial_Bold.TTF hardcoded in the blurr.fxd file. And in
standard releases there is no Arial_Bold.TTF in skin/font anymore. It
reloads the alternate font VeraBd.ttf without prob. Just a cosmetic
 thing.

Idlebar is not working for me. I suppose it only works in the blurr
 theme but it doesn't load.

Another cosmetic thing is that in local_config.py default theme is
blue_round2 but that theme is renamed isn't it. ?

And is there any usage documentation about the icecast plugin, somewhere ?.
It's not documented in the plugin itself. It fails on me when i
 activate it.

And the last one, manual recording via the webinterface adds a extra hour
on my system. 22u00 is given as start time but recording is
scheduled at 23u00. Recording via the TV-guide is working ok.

Re: [Freevo-users] Framebuffer vs. X

2003-08-01 Thread den_RDC
If you use a Nvidia card u pretty much have no choice but using X (afaik
accelerated output + tvout in fb is impossible with nvidia cards, maybe
directfb will do this in the future but i doubt it).

So, don't worry because u basically have no choice :)

OK, I am hopelessly confused (in other words, a noob) on this issue. I get
the point that framebuffer lets you run without X, but is that a tremendous
improvement? I am currently running Freevo under X with my GeForce4 using
the NVidia driver and I have no complaints about performance.

I guess I am looking for compelling reasons to attempt to get framebuffer
up and running. If someone can tell me that there is a marked improvement
when running under framebuffer, I'll give it a go.

Lastly, thanks to all the developers of Freevo for an excellent piece of
 software!

 Thanks for any feedback,

Re: [Freevo-users] Re Freevo as a persistant OS.

2003-07-24 Thread den_RDC
If you are looking for really fast boots, try www.linuxbios.org. It's mainly
replacing your bios with a linux kernel, so it goes pretty fast and has a
large coolness factor :) . It doesn't work on all motherboards, but mine is
supportted (ecs k7sem) so if i ever have some time i'll try it.

dedicated HTPC system. Really I dont need a desktop as such (although
having the option of basic X functionality with acceleration for gaming
would be nice). I'm trying to build a dedicated HTPC system, which means I
don't really want/need a huge Linux distro to do it. All I want is a nice
graphical boot, and as soon as the OS has booted (which should take zero
time for a USB 2.0 key or other flash device) I want to be able to boot
directly into Freevo, with no intervention from me and no indication of the
underlying OS. (No scrolling text, or confusing commands to enter etc). All
I want is to use an IR remote again perhaps via a USB IR hub to control
everything. In other words, no need for a keyboard unless something
breaks). Damn small Linux seems like an ideal base for something like that.

I am not totally hung on the idea of installing a Freevo OS/distribution
on a flash memory card/usb device either. What I am aiming for, what I
would love to see is a persistant OS that more or less worked like my DVD
player. After all, it takes virtually no time to boot a dvd player. I only
wish to see the same happen with my Freevo HTPC system.

Please advise. What is your view on this?

[Freevo-users] RE: dxr3 sdl patch

2003-03-28 Thread den_RDC
Well, i did everything according to the newly published howto, and it works
fine until i have to compile SDL .. I downloaded the SDL-1.2.5 sources and
applied the nokeyboard and ffmpeg-dxr3 patch, and got no error in the
patching process. But during configure, sed already complains there's no
Makefile.in in src/video/dxr3 . During the make process, make stops with the
following message.
make[3]: Entering directory `/tmp/SDL-1.2.5/src/video/dxr3'
make[3]: *** No rule to make target `all'. Stop.
I looked at the nonpatched sources, and there is no dxr3 directory in there at
all (good or bad? dunno).
If someone could help me it would be nice.

PS. about docs, a few months ago, i wrote a pretty detailed hands-on guide on
installing gentoo and configuring it for standalone freevo use (i called it
genboX), it's in dutch and needs updating (work in progress), but
nevertheless handy for belgian and dutch users maybe. It includes a forum
with some usefull tips too. http://dancevision.blub.be/genbox/
