Corrected the problem.
I had actually install libdvdread3 using apt-get in Ubuntu.
However I had forgotten to install libdvdread3-dev and when I
setup.py-installed kaa I don't think I got a very strong error or
warning and thought all worked well. I see in the stream of recent
messages that this is a common issue. Maybe would deserve to have a
better warning in place?

Now, I am trying to actually make the dvdbackup plugin work.

It is correctly set in my local config file but i don't see any
effect of inserting this.

- No additional main menu item
- No additional submenu item in the Watch video
- No additional submenu item when I browse the content of a DVD title list...

I even try to set DEBUG=2 in my config file and things get verbose very fast
... but I still can't see the debug info that should be displayed in
the first lines called in the actions method of the plugin.
I also tried to raise an Exception from there but it seems to never
have been called...

Does dvdbackup works for somebody else in 1.7rc2 ?

Thank you very much!

Regards,

Guillaume

Hi Guillaume,

I just started to play with dvdbackup. On my system, I run in a bug or
misconfiguration, I don't know now (I send a message on the devel list a
few hour before).

For the use of dvdbackup : In fact, dvdbackup don't permit a dvdbackup,
but permit a backup of some tracks of the dvd.

So, to use it :

In front of the DVD (in the freevo menu !), press the E key (or whatever
on your remote), choose Track List (I believe, using freevo in
french), the second choice, and then, select the track you want to
backup, the E key again and Backup this DVD title

Bear in mind that this is a little experimental for now :-) But it
works fine for me, after a small change in one part of the code. I
really would know if it works for you without change. To test, it's
easier to use a bonus track that to encode a whole film !

Regards,

Hello,

Thank you for your initial answer

 BUS=ide, KERNEL=*[!0-9], PROGRAM=/bin/cat /proc/ide/%k/media,
 RESULT=cdrom, NAME=%k, SYMLINK+=cdrom dvd
 This is a flexible rule that creates two symlinks to the cdrom device

I am running Ubuntu Edgy. I believe similar rules are already in place

 Make sure that, in local_conf.py

 or your equivalent is set

I tried that out but when doing that, Freevo complained that no
action has been set when I selected the DVD drive entry.

 Try different dvds,

No change.

I would guess that libdvdread and libdvdcss have not been installed

The solution is to install the above libs and re-install kaa.metadata.

I solved both issues (internal to freevo and mminfo of a device file) by
upgrading to kaa svn.
/usr/local/bin/svn co svn://svn.freevo.org/kaa/ kaa
cd kaa/trunk
python setup.py install

restart freevo and it all worked.

 I would like to do the following:
 - watch DVDs
 - rip DVDs and encode into xvid
 - watch xvids

 My first problem is that every time I put a DVD in my player, kaa does
 not seem to recognize it as a DVD and freevo just shows me the content
 of the DVD as if it was a damn CDROM. Of course, mplayer is not happy
 camper.

Difficult to say what you problem is from the description that you have
given where the problem could be.

Try checking what the dvd rule is in /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules,
should be something like:
BUS=ide, KERNEL=*[!0-9], PROGRAM=/bin/cat /proc/ide/%k/media,
RESULT=cdrom, NAME=%k, SYMLINK+=cdrom dvd
This is a flexible rule that creates two symlinks to the cdrom device

ROM_DRIVES = [ ('/mnt/dvd', '/dev/dvd', 'DVD') ]
or your equivalent is set

Try different dvds,

Try:
mminfo /dev/dvd

 I kicked out MythTV because I think Freevo is better thought out (and
 written in Python). But I really need the system to really recongize
 DVDs and show them as DVD :)
 Does anyone knows how to do?

 Next steps: (can't find any doc...). How to install the encoding
 service and the ripping module?

Best place to look if it is not in the wiki is local_conf.py.example the
 comments _should_ tell you what to set.

For DVDs just add:
plugin.activate('video.dvdbackup')
to local_conf.py

And for progress:
plugin.activate('idlebar.encoding', level=20)
Not very good at the moment but does show what phase is being run and
the expected finish time for that phase.
