Nova-T USB stick (version 2) - lots of known issues but since latest
firmware + drivers it seems ok for me:

(http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-NOVA-T-Stick)

 * Sound card - with output used

On board - stereo out to the TV, s/pdif outout to yamaha surround sound
amp for DVD's
 * Graphics card - with output used

On board - via CN400 I think, needs the openchrome drivers to allow XVMC
playback or you won't get any sensible output from the machine at all!
(http://wiki.openchrome.org/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=Collection+of+contributed+binary+packages).

I use the S-Video output from the motherboard to connect to a Sony Wide
Screen TV (not lcd)
 * Motherboard

Via SP13000 - slow, but very low power, ideal for under a TV, but won't
do HD :(
Also has noisy fan, not replaced it yet, so if someone else is thinking
of going this route, get one without a fan! they now do ones that are
just as fast but with heatsink only.
 * Case

Hiper media chassis - uATX only, lots of nice pics here (seriously good
WAF case, but I spray painted the bottom part silver to fit in better
with our all silver tv/amp etc.)

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2005/02/22/hiper_media_chassis/1

Note it needs a slimline DVD drive, but a normal hard disk is fine.

Currently running Fedora 7, latest DVB drivers from the repository built
myself.

I use the MCE2 remote with usb box
(http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_5498.html) which works great
with lirc to control freevo.

 I'll try and get an idea of the most popular but I'd also like to
 recommend hardware that's easy to setup (supported by current distro
 kernels by default) so any notes on that would help also any special
 features that might be relevant (VFD, IR included in case etc.)

 Thanks,

 John

Mac mini Core Duo.
Works with TV-out, VGA or DVI. TV-out needs to buy an DVI-Tvout adaptor
from Apple. The quality of the TV-out image it's not very good.
The VGA and DVI output image is very good. I don't notice nothing
strange.

The only audio output is optical 5.1 or analog 2.0 They use the same
hole. I use the optical 5.1 connected to Logitech z-5500 digital speakers

For controlling I use my j2me capable phone with the freevused plugin or
the Apple remote that came with the computer with the Linux event driver
plugin. Both uses the bluetooth included in the computer.

The Apple remote has only 5 buttons including movement so it's not
possible to use all the Freevo actions but it's girlfriend or wife
friendly ;-)

The distro I use now is Ubuntu 7.04 but it should work with most recent
distributions as the Intel chipset is quite well supported out of the
box. I think the only non-free drivers are the Wifi ones.

The mac mini has 4 usb connections to add keyboard, mouse or joysticks
and a dvd drive.
It's quite expensive but is very small, does not make noise if not using
the dvd and it has power for 720p x264 movies.

I think Apple is going to sell a new generation of Mac minis with Core 2 Duo
chips. I don't know if it will be supported by distros out of the box
but I suppose it will work with the distros that will come up this end
of year.

PS: Please Apple give me a pay for this publicity X-D

 * TV card - analogue, dvb-t/s/c, atsc

DVB-T: Technisat Airstar2
(we also have a Nova-T and are waiting for freevo2 to use both
cards in parallel :-) )

 * Sound card

onboard

 * Graphics card

Matrox G400 + TV-Out-Adapter,
before that we had NVIDIA Geforce2MX400

both cards needed some twiddling before the TV-Out was working
without black borders around the picture...
I wonder why it is such a problem to create a good TV-Out signal,
that is understood by a TV device out of the box. Aren't there standards
like PAL and NTSC? Why is it that difficult?
(You hear my frustration, but apart from that the picture of the Matrox
card is quite good and it was really cheap and passive cooled)

  * CPU

Pentium3 with 750 MHZ

  * harddisc

Samsung 120GB, 5400 U/min
(big enough for some mp3s, some pictures, some movies and most important
for everyday recording as long as you remove stuff after watching,
one hour of dvb-t recording without encoding is around 1 GB by the way...)

  * remote

A lirc receiver which is plugged to the good old serial input.
Works with any remote, just needs some configuration.
At the moment we use the remote of an old analog TV-card

and of course a quiet CPU-Fan, quiet power supply, quiet DVD-Drive,
everything in an usual black desktop case, nothing fancy here...

Regards
Tanja
