No problem at all, don't be afraid to ask questions. :) Ok, here goes... The most important thing regrding the epias is how you configure your tv-out / video / display. Right now I beleive you have the choice of using: plain framebuffer, directfb, VIA closed source X driver, XFree86 open source X driver. -plain framebuffer driver: VIA released a fb driver, I'm not sure how good it is. I don't know if there's an open source alternative here but either way I think you will find features missing here. -directfb: Directfb does some things very good, one of them is tv-out. Getting this to work could tke a bit of messing around but the quality may be great. A major drawback to using directfb is that not a lot of applications support is as an output method. -VIA X driver: This is the closed source driver released by VIA. They release it in a package tailored for RedHat based systems and there are binary kernel modules build against specific kernels. This is a pain in the ass if you roll your own kernel or don't use RedHat. The advantage to this driver is that it supports some of the mpeg2 decoding capabilities of the CLE266. A disadvantage to this driver is that its Xv support sucks / is broken. -XFree86 X driver: This is the open source driver and the one I chose. I am using a recent CVS snapshot. This driver doesn't support the mpeg decoding functions of the CLE266 like the VIA driver does but its Xv support is pretty good. Many applications support using Xv as an output method. I am pleased with the performance of the open source X driver for the epia. I am running Debian Sid (unstable), self patched & built kernel, and XFree86 CVS snapshot. I am using both mplayer and xine (using xv video output methods of each) and the playback of everything from divx to dvd is just fine. I am running X with a resolution of 720x480 with overscan. If you would like more details on my setup just let me know and I will provide you with links to any guides I followed or kernel patches for the epia that I used. -Rob --- This SF.net email is sponsored by: SF.net Giveback Program. I have a epia M and a PVR350. I have been able to run X over the framebuffer driver for the pvr350 and load freevo. But If try loading a divx or other file and output it with mplayer ont the pvr350 it is very very slow. If you want to watch tv you have to switch the local and global lpha values (mythtv does this automatic). I'm using the epiaM tv output for freevo right now. The pvr350 tv out is better but I didn't solve my problem for watching divx and other files. - Original Message - From: "Dave Graham" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, December 03, 2003 6:50 PM Subject: Re: [Freevo-users] Via's EPIA-M and Freevo > > Nice! Re: [Freevo-users] Via's EPIA-M and Freevo
I've been using epia M for quite a while with no problems. I had to add a line to the mplayer command to resample at 48000hz, but other than that its been excellent. Hi, Dave Graham wrote: Does anyone have Via's EPIA-M working with freevo? I starting to put I have an epia-m 10k as well, but it isn't in a system yet. However, I have set up two itentical Freevo systems with this board and they a working really well. Their owners are quite pleased with them and I must say the first one I built put a huge smile on my face. together a project system for an article and will be using the EPIA-M 1 (CLE266 northbridge; Nehemiah 1ghz processor) along with a Hauppage PVR-350. Nice! Which will you be using for the tv-out, the PVR-350 or the epia's onboard stuff? The systems I built are using a PVR-250 to I am using the epia's tv-out and CLE266. These machines also have a 120 Gb 8 Mb buffer western digital drive and LG dvd-rom, the cases are VIA sereniti 2000. Any help would be appreciated. Re: [Freevo-users] Via's EPIA-M and Freevo
hi, --On Wednesday, December 03, 2003 13:20:15 + Dave Graham <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Does anyone have Via's EPIA-M working with freevo? I starting to put together a project system for an article and will be using the EPIA-M 1 (CLE266 northbridge; Nehemiah 1ghz processor) along with a Hauppage PVR-350. i have a friends epia-m computer standing right next to my laptop and he waits for me to finish it freevo-wise. i'm having quite some trouble with it since i insisted on using debian as distribution. currently there are two (or maybe three) possibilities to make freevo get something on the tv-out. 1) directfb 2) plain framebuffer? 3) xfree+sdl+mplayer -vo xv my trouble is that using the -epia kernel (btw. epia linux howto: http://www3.sympatico.ca/howlettfamily/epia/epia_howto/t1.html and the linux area at the www.viaarena.com forum are the two best resources i know) the viafb frambuffer module segfaults when i try the TVOn=1 argument. the directfb team is developing their own fork from the viafb module. i tried the viafb module from the directfb project along with a recent cvs checkout of directfb and this viafb module segfaults even without any argument. so directfb/framebuffer solution is probably not quite ready for primetime. plain framebuffer suffers under the same segfault problem. directfb needs viafb in order to work. i couldn't :( the xfree solution basically "should" work. however, i have the problem that xfree works nicely even with overscan tv-out etc., but the XV video output just doesn't work. i get some strange white bars and some flickering pixels and thats it. -vo x11 -fs -zoom works, but i find it silly not to use hardware acceleration on such a small machine. maybe somebody has a hint for me on how to get xv work. btw. if you want to save some work you might want to use google and find "freepia". it's a linux distribution for epia and freevo based on red-hat. it could spare you a whole lot of work. i didn't bother, because i don't like redhat. whatever article you plan to write. there are already plenty of resources for epia-m and linux. you might want to consider whether it makes sense to spend time on work already done. the problem is not missing articles, but quality drivers/kernel modules that make all sorts of trouble. however, if you plan to use the pvr350 anyway, it might be possible for you to use the pvr350 tv-out. i'm not sure whether this works already. then everything should be more or less straightforward... -- Benjamin Zeiss --- This SF.net email is sponsored by: SF.net Giveback Program.
