Can't you just throw out this pulseaudio stuff and use alsa directly?

I'm using Debian Lenny (no X, just a Matrox G400 and directfb) and
setup Alsa to use direct hardware access (device hw:0). Soundservers
are evil and I also don't like the default Alsa dmix plugin doing
any resampling :-)

So far I didn't have any issues with Debian, and since you are
already familiar with Ubuntu switching to Debian shouldn't be a big
deal.

BTW: Personally, I'm not too fond of Ubuntu, it's a little bit
too experimental and bleeding-edge to me. I installed Lucid Lynx
on my sister's laptop several months ago and were plagued by the
infamous GMA4500 random screen flickers for quite a while, until
someone mentioned that setting i915.powersave=0 fixed this (default
on Ubuntu was 1, IIRC on Debian it was 0). Also I'm not sure if
the switch from sysv-init to upstart wasn't too early (there still
seem to be some issues with upstart).

so long,

Hias

I use gentoo, more or less happy till now. Did not have big problems, even
compiling stuff for my own (xine with vdpau support, vdr etc). Though takes
time to take care of system because of compilations.

Long live freevo!

I used Ubuntu 9.10, however, I had all sorts of problems, especially
with lirc. Perhaps I should have used Debian. Freevo should have a
recommended distro or better yet, a distro/install disk. Something like
Piren was supposed to be, but up to date and an installer.

Re: [Freevo-users] which distro for freevo?

2007-03-26 Thread Michel Hoogervorst

Cool! Someone else mentioning FreevoLive :-D

If you wish to try FL, I'd recomment waiting for a small time, since I'm
working on a new version, which is no remaster of MCNLive anymore, but build
from a clean MDV2007.0 system.
Also, I'll try to put the newer harddrake scripts (from MDV cooker
24-03-2007), which should do a lot better on detecting and installing
various tv-cards.

If you don't want to wait, FL0.11 is not very stable (but has Freevo
1.7.0included though),
FL0.10 is a better option (with Freevo 1.6.3).
(Both have kernel 2.6.17.11mdv, but don't let that number scare you, since
it has a lot of backports from 2.6.18/19/20 ;-))

Hey there,

For a linux distribution, I like Debian, but it isn't as friendly as
some for new users. You may have good luck with Ubuntu, which I
installed on a friend's laptop. Any distribution will work, it just
depends on how steep a learning curve you want. My preference for
Debian is based largely on the packaging system, which does a very good
job of getting all the dependencies you need and keeping them up to date
and out of conflict, and you get that packaging system with Ubuntu as well.

For a media center, you can just install a minimal set of packages and
install other things as you need them. The problem I see for a new user
of linux is that you won't know what packages you need without reading a
mountain of documentation. If you want something that's already set up
for you, the advice of these other posters is better than mine.

There is a great deal of information about installing and setting up
freevo on the freevo wiki (go to http://freevo.sourceforge.net/ and
click 'wiki'). There are instructions for setting up freevo on various
linux distributions.
