Re: [FRIAM] Anyone on Friam know Linux capabilities on Pentium PCs ?

2023-04-19 Thread Roger Critchlow
I would expect that it should be able to do it.

It should also be able to produce a log of all keystrokes and mouse events
received and processed.

An audit laptop would be able to independently sniff the keystroke and
mouse events off the LAN and verify that the log from the test scoring
machine matches the events sent by the test taker machines. It could also
detect interference on the LAN during the test session.

Re: [FRIAM] Call blockers

2023-04-19 Thread Gillian Densmore
You can still get a voice number. For what it's worth. But they changed it
from a true seperate number to glorified call forwarding. -_-.. When I used
it's call screen feature people that wanted to call me. Would read me the
riot act (looking at you kim) And scam callers would get through to my land
line eventually anyway. Among the worst offenders are debt collectors. I
don't have any. (not that I know of) but once in a while I'll get smashed
for hours on end from the same leach. I don't answer. And pretty quickly
one of my blocking apps will block them. For a while because I was in a
mood, I had one set up to randomly pick from: the infamous I am lucutus of
borg sound clip, the loudestset of horns I could find, a high pitched
whistle, them talking at themselves, and my favorite: a oldschool modem
dial tone. The hight of hilarity getting a scam email saying to stop stop
stop we give up! And then being disturbed to wonder how they got my email
address even if it went to spam.

Re: [FRIAM] Book Lovers of Santa FE

2023-04-19 Thread Steve Smith
We got the word that Peggy Frank found someone to carry Book Mountain
forward...   a couple already working in the bookstores of Santa Fe for
years...   Lauren Ayles? and Phil Geronimo... also poets/writers.

Even though they are nominally a "paperback exchange", their inventory
has grown to include a lot of quality non-fiction, especially since they
moved down the street a few years ago.  I get the feeling that Lauren
and Phil will probably move them even more in that direction as time
goes forward.

Our credit there is well above what we could spend down responsibly
(without filling our house again) and will likely donate the bulk of it,
we were honestly just glad to have someone make sure the thousands of
books we brought them last year (thousands more to other stores in SFe
as well) aren't going to a pulp mill or landfill.

If anyone here still reads paper, go on in and check them out!

I'm futzing around with examples of people who have used GoFundMe
programs to rescue bookstores (financially) and it looks like some of
those were resounding successes.   The key here is probably as much
finding someone(s) willing and able to manage such a store, even if
funds for it get raised.  I have no idea of the magnitude of what she
needs to be released from this obligation she built over 40+ years.

and rejuvenation of the store a couple of years ago:

https://www.santafenewmexican.com/news/business/book-mountain-alive-and-well-in-new-location/article_9003513a-3c8b-11ea-a81e-373351759896.html

The new digs and layout were a modest upgrade from what she had going
before, and has a somewhat wider range of books shelved now, though
the emphasis is still on high-turnover paperback. She has one of the
most extensive collections of Science Fiction I think you fill find
this side of Powells (Portland) or Tattered Cover (Denver).

I probably unloaded 1/4 of my "2 cords of books" leftover from *my*
bookstore (Hunt and Gather circa 2006) on her for trade (my credit is
much too large to begin to drain in the short term).

What I am hoping is that one of her customers or someone in the book
loving circle would swoop in and buy it outright.   I have already
talked to some of the other booksellers in town and she has already
approached them offering to sell them her inventory, but the ideal
would be for it to remain a viable business.  Her current
setup/inventory/curation works and is by far more valuable than the
mere inventory (which would need to be sorted, shelved, etc. again).

If anyone here knows of anyone suitable for taking on such an
operation I highly recommend it, but I suspect the time is short.
Peggy is just coming out of some health-challenges and I sense she
will not be willing/able to wait very long.    I am holding out a
slim hope that one of the other used-sellers in SFe might pick it up
as a satellite (Op Cit already has had multiple locations).

In any case, spread the word if you can.   Maybe there is a coop
model or multiple-partner arrangement that might keep it going and
help Peggy leave the business cleanly/gracefully.

Well, I'm not sure if you can still get a Google Voice number. But I just now added my
landline as the "linked number" in my Google Voice account. And it now forwards
there, screens calls, etc. So it's still there. Of course Google will/does kill things
arbitrarily.

It's fairly easy to turn a phone that supports voice mail and caller ID

- Have the phone answer on the first ring.
- Record your message saying that this is a screening and voice mail
system. Instruct people to introduce themselves. Tell them that if no one
answers, they should continue with their message.
- When the phone rings, look at the screen to see who's calling and
listen to the self-introduction. Then decide if you want to answer.

Virtually all spam callers will either hang up before identifying
themselves or identify themselves in such a way that you know not to answer.

pick up your landline and Google will talk to you with a phone menu of options.

Of course, that doesn't solve people getting your landline number from a
phone book ... do people still use phone books?

Re: [FRIAM] Anyone on Friam know Linux capabilities on Pentium PCs ?

2023-04-19 Thread Sarbajit Roy
Thanks Gary

The question is this -- "Can a Pentium server at 1.5 GhZ with 4 GB RAM
running a proprietary Linux OS service 125 PCs on a LAN during an a
competitive exam and *very reliably* record every keystroke and mouse click
of each of these 125 examinees. The same server is simultaneously also
disiplaying a unique exam on screen for each examinee where the sequence of
questions is jumbled and the answer options are jumbled for each examinee.

I am being flooded just now with complaints of a recent very prestigious
online exam in India where candidates all over India are saying their
answers have not been properly recorded. This is not the first time
similar complaints have come for this exam.

Also these local servers usually run Windows, but for this exam the exam
vendor loads his proprietary Linux OS as a dual boot along with his own
application software.

Re: [FRIAM] Call blockers

2023-04-19 Thread Russ Abbott
I think Google has stopped its telephone service. It got enough samples of
voices to train its systems and needs no more.

It's fairly easy to turn a phone that supports voice mail and caller ID
into a call blocker.

You should be able to forward to your landline from a virtual number like
Google Voice. Then only give out your virtual number. You should be able to
pick up your landline and Google will talk to you with a phone menu of options.

Of course, that doesn't solve people getting your landline number from a phone
book ... do people still use phone books?
