This discussion jogged an old memory. I recall in the 3rd or 4th ('83 or
'84) grade we would get a trip down to the computer lab once a week to get
some hands on time with the computers (TRS-80s). The two things that stand
out in my mind is playing a Whale typing game, where you had to learn to
type faster before getting swallowed, and the other was an adventure game
where you ate a Twinkie. The name of that game has longed escaped by memory
however.

Not sure exactly how much of the fault can be placed on the union here.
Union also previously accepted pay cuts and benefit cuts at the same time
that upper management salaries rose exponentially - I can see why they'd be
willing to play chicken when the last time the "we're going to go out of
business if we don't cut pay" card was played the CEO got a huge raise.
Management also looted profits while building up debt.

Re: [funsec] Twinkipocalypse averted

2012-11-20 Thread Blanchard, Michael (InfoSec)
You see though… I don’t care how big of a raise the CEO got, as that
contributes to the high cost of Hostess as well…. but the UNION demanded pay
contracts contribute more to the final price of the items….

Both those items will cause a company to go bankrupt, as Hostess has done…
the final straw that caused them to close the doors was the Union wanting to go
on strike, even though the owners said “go on strike and we’ll shut the place
down and lock the doors”…. They even gave them 2 days of strike I believe
before drawing a line in the sand “ 5pm today if you’re still on strike we shut
down for good”…. The arrogance of the union cause the demise of Hostess… ALL
unions are the same, they are no longer needed and should be removed
completely…. Let free enterprise dictate survival….

Little Debbie is a perfect example… no unions, better management solutions…
lower costs to the end consumer…. THEY’RE still in business and Hostess with
BIG unions, and fairly poor management caused them to go bankrupt….

You know what else, I’d flip my middle finger to any government official that
mandates that I arbitrate with anyone to keep my company open…. It’s MY
company, Fuck the government telling me that I have to negotiate with anyone…
I set my rules in MY company, if people don’t like it tough shit, they can work
somewhere else…. If I want to shut down MY company the government (national or
local) has no right to mandate I keep my doors open…
Contracts with the workers are a different story, if I had one with them,
I’d invoke the buy out clause in their contract and then close my doors…..

Other than that I have no opinion on the subject ☺

You *do* realize that at many companies, the *threat* of unionizing
is sufficient to make the companies play nice? Or are you one of those
that think it would be Perfectly OK if we went back to the sort of
abuses that caused unions to get powerful, and which we decry when
we see them at non-union shops at Foxconn or Nike?

It's also possible that they may still go out of business. At the same time
that
management agreed to arbitration they also petitioned the court to allow them
to
a) lay off 18,500 workers, and b) pay out bonuses to management.

I have an alternate solution, which I think would be quite effective.
Unfortunately, sadly, tragically, it's not legal. Pity. However:

Given that they were trying to hand out executive bonuses while
simultaneously laying off workers, I would suggest decapitating the
corporate officers and permanently mounting their heads on iron posts
outside corporate HQ as a subtle reminder to their successors. I realize
that this would incur a one-time expense -- and I have no idea what
the current market rates are for quality executioners, although iron
posts are quite cheap -- but on the other hand, the resulting decrease
in compensation (inluding bonuses) should be far more than adequate to
cover it.

Now I realize that this is lenient, perhaps excessively so. But in
an effort to promote a kinder, gentler society I think we can afford
the luxury of extending mercy to them far greater than they have ever
demonstrated.
