Re: CD tray problem

2002-03-27 Thread Seth

Yep. My girlfriend's mother had the very same problem with her icebook when
someone dropped it. Hope you have Applecare. She took into an Apple Store
and they sent it in to fix it. The repair would have cost upwards of $300.00
without AppleCare. Said they couldn't do anything else in the store to fix
aside from sending it in to Apple.

Sorry, yes, but the follow-ups for these questions related to the
performance of FW drives versus exp. bay hard drives and what the
performance hit was. For Listers' interest, here's an excellent
comparative table of the various speeds of exp. bay devices and PCMCIA
drives in 'Books:

Try TransIntl. Lower slot stuff is more expensive (LP SO-DIMMs). Just

Re: Powerbook G4 Memory

At least with my 'new' refurbished 500 Apple used a 256 RAM chip in the
lower slot making the upgrade to 512 much easier. OS X works better with
more ram.

Re: Lombard Ram

2002-03-27 Thread Dick Grable

The only constraint I know of is only 256 in each slot. There were/are
problems with the processors in early Lombards having problems with more
than the stock 64 megs of ram although I can't remember if that applied to
OS X installs only.

Yes, Lombards are very picky about RAM. If it doesn't say that it's

VST Expansion Bay HD - alternatives?

2002-03-27 Thread gd2

Like someone else who posted recently about the VST Expansion Bay 10GB hard
drive, my shoplet.com order was just canceled; the e-mail says that the
manufacturer is no longer making the item.

SO - does anyone happen to have a summarized list of alternatives?

Here's what I know so far (with approximate prices):

MCE expansion bay kit (install your own HD) =$120
PowerBoy USB/FW external drive, bus-powered, install your own HD=$49

Anybody have any other solutions? I'm looking mainly for expansion bay or
Firewire bus-powered drive enclosures; I have a 2.5" HD to put in it.

Thanks -
Gene

CD tray problem

2002-03-27 Thread Philip

Hi all,
I have an iBook (500) with a CD/RW drive. Lately, the CD tray has been
popping open at times on its own. Sometimes it will be when I touch the
tray on the outside, for example when I pick up the iBook. Other times, it
will just open for no apparent reason.

Anyone having this problem?

Thanks,
Philip

Mom says "Please vote"

2002-03-27 Thread Dan Knight

Twice a year we run a pair of surveys -- Best of the Mac Web and Rest of
the Mac Web. The second survey covers 50 sites not included in the "Best"
poll, and the best of these will move up to the "Best" survey in October.

Rest of the Mac Web has a lot of good low-end sites like Mac512K, System
6 Heaven, the pickle's Low-end Mac FAQ, etc. I urge all of you to take a
few minutes and share your opinion of the site's your familiar with --
