Help! Wallstreet Has a Problem

2002-10-28 Thread BG
Greetings! Turned on my WS (266/192/6) this morning and I got the chime and
I guess it started up, but the screen is totally bright grey with no HD
or trash icons. I never saw the Mac Happy Face or the OS, etc. The
mouse/pointer are working, but I cannnot get to the control panel or
anything (no menu bar or anything, for that matter - just a bright grey
screen from top to bottom. It won't even go to sleep when I close the lid).

I put the Norton utilities disk in the zip and restarted, but of course
that's no help because I cannot get to the control panel to switch Start-Up
Disks. I also forced restart twice but still the same thing - zilch except
the chime and the bright grey screen.

The other day I read on this list about turning off the memory in order to
lessen the time between the chime and the actual start-up. So I did do that
but I don't remember when I did it, nor do I remember for sure if I turned
Mac off and back on since I did that. (I was using it all day Sunday and it
worked fine! I turned Mac off about 10 pm last night and all was well!)

Any clues anyone? I'm on digest mode so any backchannel replies are fine as
well. (Thank goodness for old backup Macs! It was a member of one of the
lemlists who said it's always a good idea to keep your old Mac for
situations just like this! Otherwise, how would one get online to ask for
help!) ;-)

Thanks very much or any tips from the knowledgeable tipsters!
Best regards,
Gail

You need to go look at the Wireless driver FAQ and join that mailing
list for the best answers. However, a quick check of their FAQ, says
specifically that the Orinoco Gold doesn't support WEP(or at least
hasn't been confirmed working)

You'll also find the archive for the mailing list there.

Good luck.

IBM Travelstar HD noise levels

2002-10-28 Thread Andrew Main
If anyone's interested, I've done some more research on Travelstar
noise levels. From IBM's product datasheets (prices at Googlegear):

Travelstar noise levels (Bels)
40GN (4200RPM) 20GB ($89): 2.1 idle, 2.7 operation
40GN (4200RPM) 40GB ($128): 2.4 idle, 3.1 operation
40GNX (5400RPM) 20GB ($98) or 40GB ($145):
2.5 idle, 3.1 operation (typ); 2.7 idle, 3.3 operation (max)
60GH (5400RPM) 60GB ($271): 2.5 idle, 3.5 operation

My experience with a 40GN 20GB compared to a 40GNX 20GB about match
these specs, I'd say; the latter is a little louder, and the sound
quality is a little different - slightly more obtrusive. I suppose
this is the price of the greater speed. But all these drives are
vastly easier to live with than the earlier non-FDB IBM models like
the 6/12/18GB (and related 25GB) DARA-series drives that came stock
with Lombard and Pismo PBs (IBM's datasheets don't list any acoustic
data for these models).

Wallstreet ram test?

2002-10-28 Thread Kris Dunn
I found a good deal on a 256mb PC133 sodimm a couple of weeks ago at circuit
city. I didn't expect it to work in my 250mhz Wallstreet, but since it was
local and I could return it if it didn't I thought I would give it a try.
This is my first mac, just recently purchased. I am currently running os X.0
and have 128mb installed in the lower ram slot.

To my surprise it does seem to work!!! It boots fine and the correct amount
of ram shows in the system information screen under the apple menu. All I
have tried at this point is simple browsing. Does anyone have any
suggestions of something that will tax the memory and ensure that the ram
is stable and should continue to work?

Thanks

Update: Help! Wallstreet Has a Problem

2002-10-28 Thread BGbytes
Hi out there in G-Book land... I am on the Wallstreet now (forgot to email
myself a copy of the email I sent to this group earlier so a copy is not
attached below, sorry...)

Update:
I took out the battery earlier so it would shut off because I couldn't get
it to shut down without having the screen/contents, etc.

After a few hours, I turned it back on and it started up fine but:
-the date was wrong.
-it was not recognizing my zip drive (I wanted to use Norton on it).
-when I checked control panels/start-up disk the system froze up.
-had to force quit and start over (and I put the battery back in).

Second start-up:
-the date was fine.
-it was still not recognizing the zip drive, so I jiggled all the wires and
connections.
-when I checked Apple System Profiler and clicked on drives the whole
system froze up again (and still didn't show the zip).
-did a force quit and started over again.

In the interim, I jiggled all the wires and connections on the zip drive
again.

Third start-up:
-zip drive now showing up (duh!)
-I ran Norton Disk Doctor (from the HD) and all fine on both partitions.
-checked ASP and all drives showing up.

I don't know why it kept freezing up twice, or why the screen would not show
up early this morning. It's a mystery to me...

BTW, the Command-R (I think) while clicking on Memory (which is what I did
the other day after reading it here, to lessen the time between the chime
and start-up), doesn't seem that much faster to me (but then I didn't time
it, either):
-How do I un-do that just in case?
-And does that affect the RAM being on/off? I always keep the RAM on
because it seems to make web pages work faster/better.

Anyway, all seems OK now, and sorry for bothering everyone!
Thanks/Gail

sure, but keep in mind that since they're sharing the net

essentially only get half (for varying values of the word half). e.g.
 it'll be slower.

The Airport Setup Assistant and Internet Connect will not recognize

Did you do an upgrade or a clean install? Did you try adjusting the screen
brightness? Maybe something happened to the file containing those settings
and when 10.2 starts, it's just setting the brightness to some odd value...

 Darn!

If you have the video cable with the 14 in screen it'll work ..

S key being difficult, help, also on s key

2002-10-28 Thread Dwight Hines

On my firewire Pismo, the s key is not as easy to get to make a mark on the
screen as the other keys.

Anyone have suggestions?

It is a real pain because I have to rehit the key and that destroys my speed
and accuracy at the same time.

one key for iBook

2002-10-28 Thread Randy Cheyanne
Hey G-bookers,

I have knocked the e-key (of all the keys!!) off my iBook (dual USB
600mhz, 8MB Vram model). Anybody have a source for individual keys?
Seems silly to replace the whole keyboard for one key. All I can find
when I search is entire keyboards.

thanks,

Randy

OT: Problems with Samsung ML-1220

2002-10-28 Thread Jason Long
Folks,
I recently bought a refurbished Samsung ML-1210 laser printer for my Pismo.
Unfortunately I cannot print because I always get a printer is busy message
from every program I've tried so far and then it cancells the print request
in both OS 9.2.2 and 10.2.1. I've reinstalled the software several times and
made sure that I've activated the required extensions, and used the Chooser,
but I'm at a loss.
Does anyone have any experience with this printer that might be of any use?

Jason

You could email John at PowerBook Parts mailto:orders;pbparts.com and
check if he could sell you one. I know they have some minimum order, but if
you don't ask, you won't know...

Apple Retail Stores (and other AASPs) sometimes have spare keycaps
laying around too, and most don't have a problem just giving them out
if they do. We keep dead keyboards laying around for just that
purpose...

Jaguar - no carrier detected

2002-10-28 Thread John Fox
I hope someone can provide insight into my problem.

To put it simply, I am having trouble getting Jaguar to recognize my
modem. I am running a PowerBook G3 250 with 256 MB memory. It tells me
my modem cannot detect a carrier signal. I have been told that I need
an updated modem script, but I cannot find one anywhere. Right now,
I've stripped my PowerBook down to Aqua (X.1.5). It runs like a champ,
but the modem doesn't sound when it dials. Under 9.2.1, the speaker is
loud and clear, but in X there is no sound made from the modem speaker.
Can anyone offer assistance. I'd love to be able to use Jaguar! Please
help!!

John
