iBook ethernet doesn't work?

2003-08-21 Thread Andrew Main
I couldn't get a (clamshell) iBook to connect via ethernet, using a
crossover cable, to my PowerBook. I tried another computer (PB 1400)
and it worked, so I know the cable and setup are good. AppleTalk is
on, and routed to built-in ethernet. So I guess the ethernet port
must be bad, though visually it looks okay (no bent pins). Then I
tried another iBook, and had the same problem, so now I'm wondering
if there's some trick to setting up ethernet on an iBook? Or is there
any other way to test the port?

USB flash drive for clamshell iBook?

2003-08-21 Thread Andrew Main
A while ago I bought one of Dr Bott's clever little T3Hub USB hubs
http://www.drbott.com/prod/db.lasso?code=3105-T3IB for use with a
clamshell iBook (which has only one USB port), but was dismayed (and
rather annoyed) to find that it didn't fit. The iBook's USB port is
recessed about a half inch into the case, and the casing of the T3Hub
stops it from inserting far enough to make contact. I eventually used
a razor blade to shave off the corners of the T3Hub's casing so it
could be inserted in the iBook, an ugly if finally effective solution.

Now I want to get a USB flash drive to use with, among others,
clamshell iBooks, but am concerned that I might encounter the same
problem. Has anyone used a USB flash drive with a clamshell iBook,
and run into this difficulty -- or not? What brand works, or doesn't?

Re: iBook Ethernet doesn't work?

2003-08-21 Thread Wiebe Wilbers
Did you try with just a plain Ethernet cable? I don't know which models were
included, but I know some (all?) iBooks had an auto-configuration thingo,
where a cross-over cable was not needed... The ibook would sense a computer
to computer network, and go from there.

[OT] Unix gurus: help!

2003-08-21 Thread Raymond Wiker
Laurent Daudelin writes:
Sorry for the off-topic message. I could really use some help! I've been
banging my head over a stupid problem I'm experiencing on OS X and can't
waste anymore time. If I can't resolve this quickly, I will have to jump on
  by Windoze box.

I've been working on Nexstep/Openstep since 1992, so I know a bit of Unix.
Right now, I'm trying to run a shell script from the terminal to set a few
environment variables. Problem is, no matter what I do, the variables are
undefined after I ran the script. I have a text file named 'setEnv.tcsh'
  like this:

  #!/bin/tcsh -f
  setenv FOO bar
  echo -n 'Foo is '
  echo -n $FOO
  echo '.'

I run it from the terminal like ./setEnv.tcsh. It runs and displays the
value of FOO as 'Foo is bar', but whenever the script completes and I
check the value of ${FOO}, I get undefined variable.

  What's going on?

Thanks for pointing my obvious stupid mistake...

Executing a script means that it runs in its own shell - any
changes to variables etc will not be reflected in the parent shell.

What you should do instead is to include the file; you do
this by

source setEnv.tcsh

HTH.

Running the shell script (tcsh? ick) like that executes everything in a

a child process do not propogate back up to the parent process.

To make those changes stick in the current process, you need to source it:

% source setEnv.tcsh

Re: iBook ethernet doesn't work?

2003-08-21 Thread gdadams1
If I recall the iBook (clamshell) automatically senses whether you have a crossover or
regular e/net cable. You didn't say whether you were in X (which can connect
automatically) or in 9, which must be set properly. You need to start up the iBook
after your cable is connected and the PB is running (if I recall).

Re: backlight problems

2003-08-21 Thread aramone 2
Yeah, I suspect the inverter. It seems to be a common problem. Does anyone
know how much it might cost to get fixed, and if there's a cheaper place
than apple? (I'm in San Francisco at the moment).

PS I tried resetting the pram but it didn't work.

Andrew,
Any flash drive should work and fit your clamshell iBook. Most, if not
all, come with an extender cable. I have 2 - 128MB flash drives from
