AC-Driven Speaker Static

2003-08-27 Thread tivo
I have two pairs of AC driven speakers plugged into a splitter connected to
my output jack. I listen to iTunes music through them; the sound is okay.

The speakers tend to alternate static buzzing, music on or off (although I
probably don't hear it when music is playing). I like to keep one pair of
speakers operating when computing (even without music) for the sounds that
let me know something is saved, etc.

Is there anything that I can do to stop the static from occurring?

Thanks, Tivo

Re: Attaching second display

2003-08-27 Thread Hal
You're correct. This is the adapter that you would use to connect an
Apple ADC LCD display to your Powerbook (or any mac that has a DVI
digital video connector). The reason that you need it is that the Apple
LCD displays use a proprietary connector that carries digital video,
USB and power to the display over a single cable. The DVI port on your
powerbook carries only digital video. The adapter plugs into the back
of the display and splits the ADC into video, USB and power. The
adapter you are using right now just converts the connector on the back
of your Powerbook from digital to analog VGA. It doesn't have to carry
and split the other signals.

Hope that helps.

Looking for fried Pismo

2003-08-27 Thread csean
Hi,
If anyone has a Pismo with a fried motherboard I'd be interested in buying
it. Even without battery, RAM, HD, DVD, which you might want to sell
separately. Either a 400 or 500, naturally with good working processor and
screen (and PRAM battery, if possible).
Naturally I'll pay all shipping. Payment thru paypal if you want.
Pretty urgent, so if you can help, it'd be greatly appreciated. Please let
me know offlist. Thanks,

Chris

You only need the display adapter if you have a non-Apple display card and
an Apple cinema display. The Apple display comes with 2 USB connections on
the back of it. The connector that comes with it has a special connector
head that allows for both the DVI and USB to connect through the same
connector head. If you buy one of the newer display cards such as the ATI
8500 or 9000, they come with a "standard" PC DVI connector without the USB
connectivity; thus you need the "dongle" which provides a connection to the
card and to one of your USB ports on your machine on one end and connects to
the Cinema display at the other. Thus you lose one of your USB ports on your
machine but retain the 2 on the back of the display. I know this because I
have a G4 Quicksilver with an 8500 display card and a 17" Apple Cinema
Display.
In fact, if you get an Apple display and need a card, I have a twin head
(Apple connector) and standard video 2X AGP card that I will sell for a
resonable price. You will need a machine that has the AGP slot to use the
card.

I replaced my Pismo DVD with a Samsung SN-324B Slim Combo drive that writes
CDs at 24x, rewrites at 10x, reads CDs at 24x and reads DVDs at 8x. It is
bootable in 9 and 10 using the ALT key. Works perfectly with Toast. I hacked
the iTunes plugin for 9 and it works great. Disk Burner support without
hacked plugin, BUT I had problems mounting disks I burnt in Toast (message:
"This disk is unreadable..."), which I solved by disabling the Apple CD/DVD
extension and using Toast CD Reader 5. Now no problems mounting burnt CDs,
but no Disk Burner support. Plays DVDs fine in 9 and 10.
A great purchase on ebay at around $120.

Check out xlr8yourmac for lots of other reports, including DVD-R/RW drives
that work in Pismos. Look under Drive Compatibility Database, then Pismo and
Expansion Bay.

Prices tend to vary, but you should be able to find a Combo drive that works
perfectly in the Pismo for around $100-120. Samsung, Matshita, Teac, etc.,
lots of different makes and models work great. The xlr8yourmac site also has
illustrated takeapart and install guides to replace the original DVD
mechanism.

Re: Pismo reassembled

2003-08-27 Thread Jochen Busch
well well..

time didn´t change the pismo´s graphics behaviour ;(
as well as Pram reset or Powermanager reset didn´t
MacOS seems to run in full functionality,
so CPU, ram, mainboard, sound/powercard ... should be ok
It´s just that I have to navigate blindly...
I am disassembling the book now again
to look for loose connectors or something like that.
Are there more connectors than those 2 of the graphics cable and the
backlight cable that are relevant?
Could someone give me a hint where exactly the ati chips are placed ?
Maybe on the CPU daughtercard ?
Or on the bottom side of the mainboard?
(anyway: I think I couldn´t have done damage here, but who knows..!?)
On the other hand:
with neither the internal LCD
nor the external connected monitor functioning
the malfunction should be located rather central..!?
Some experimental question:
Would the pismo run safe without Inverterboard,
or could the attempt to run it without damage the book ?
greetings Jochen
