Not really re: Sound Pass through in OS X, but close enough.

2003-10-03 Thread Taylor McLaren
Sound pass through is set in OS 10.2.6 (and earlier versions of OS X?)
using the Audio MIDI Setup application in Applications:Utilities.
Strange location for this option, I think, but there it is.
This is sort of neat. When I saw that the audio setup utility gave the
option of adjusting channel levels for different types of inputs, I was
finally able to fix a long-standing quirk of my iMic: the levels of any
signal recorded when the iMic was connected to USB bus 1 (the port
closest to the front of my iBook 800) have always been about half as
loud on the left channel as they are on the right. That problem appears
to have been solved now.
Many thanks to whoever initially brought up the pass-through issue on
the list!

Airport Extreme Firmware Update?

2003-10-03 Thread Demetrius
Greetings,

Since I upgraded to 10.2.8, I have had some minor issues with
performance on my Pismo. My windows sometimes open and close very very
slowly, connecting to the internet has been tricky at times, but the biggest
issue has been my printer. Airport Extreme Firmware Update 5.1.3 claims it
adds help with USB printing among other things. Do I need to download it?
If so, how do I install it? I downloaded it, but I assumed there would be an
installer, but it shows up as a .bin.

Forgive me if my question is silly.

Demetrius

You can replace it of course, as was specified in a different message, or
you could just go to eBay and get some cheap PCMCIA modem, and use that. A
lot less stuffing around. Not a great solution, I admit, just thought I
would throw the idea out there. Personally, I would prefer the internal
working.
The PowerBook is a university asset and has AppleCare, so it won't
cost me out of pocket to get it fixed. I was just wondering if it was
going to be a mobo replacement or not as that would increase the
downtime.

Not really re: Sound Pass through in OS X, but close enough

2003-10-03 Thread Eric Morrison
Hi:

Never really had any sound problems on Pismo 400 (upgraded w/ the
PowerLogix 500MHz G4), 10.2.8, 768MB RAM but seeing this thread had to
check it out. Found out two things:

1) if you have the Audio Midi Setup utility open and adjust the volume
with the volume up/down keys on the keyboard.. occasionally the
left/right volumes go up or down different amounts (I'm assuming this
is what Taylor was referring to as attenuation) as you press the
up/down volume keys. Very odd. It actually seemed that the more I did
it, the less they tended to get out of synch... or this may have just
been my wishful thinking

2) when they get out of whack, checking the output balance in the sound
preference pane does in fact reflect this discrepancy as the balance
moves off center. That is, you can adjust this just as easily from
the Output tab of the Sound preference pane by centering the
balance between the right and left channels.

.. fyi ...

You can use any caddy (or sled) for Lombard or Pismo, they're all the

No sound with Virtual PC 6.0 and Windows XP

2003-10-03 Thread Mark Edward Attew
I know I know, why am I putting Windows on my Mac?

I need it for one application that MS won't port to Mac.

I had Virtual PC 5.0 with OS 10.2.8 and Win 2k and sound worked fine.

Now with Windows XP, Virtual PC tells me there is something wrong with
my version of OS X and I need to update it to get sound to work.

What's going on?

Can I adapt a Lombard screen for a Pismo?

2003-10-03 Thread JW Travis
I have a Pismo with a cracked screen and was just given a Lombard screen.

The screens in their lids appear to be the same except for one extra pair of
color twisted wires coming from the inverter on the Lombard--so the plug is
one pair of connectors longer than the socket on the Pismo.

Does anyone know if I can make them work together, by, say, switching the
inverters?

Pismo dvd stuck

2003-10-03 Thread Donald Keenan
Hi all!
I need help!
I was watching a dvd in my Pismo with Jaguar 10.2.6 and it just stopped.
It's frozen on a frame. This is a replacement drive I've had under
AppleCare for months. The bad brand, whichever Apple uses.

Well, I can't eject it. I push f12 and the eject image appears but the
rainbow ball just keeps spinning. I think my Applecare either ran out
10/1 or will on 10/10.

My Pismo's just getting hot. I can't get it to force quit...

Any ideas?

TIA,

Donald

Pull the battery and pull the AC cord. That will kill it. The machine

 Here's another tidbit:
Since I got it, every second boot or so has crashed mid-extensions
with a system error supposedly caused by Apple Audio Extension.
Curiously, this has happened in 9.2.2, 9.2.1, and off a 9.2.1 CD, so
it's clearly nothing to do with the extension itself - some other
 trickery is at work.

I've seen this! Only once, and it was under MacOS 9.1 on my Wallstreet.
Scared
the fsck out of me. The next time I booted I checked the Audio Extension and
it was fine. Weird...anyone else see this on a G3 PowerBook?

Drew, IIRC you may want to check the extension which loaded right after
the Apple Audio Extension (or maybe the one right before). On my Pismo,
sometimes it's not been the extension whose icon you see last, but the
one that was in process of loading that caused the problem (or else, the
extension right before AAE, and it conflicted with AAE).

Jim

Re: Pismo dvd stuck

Pull the battery and pull the AC cord. That will kill it. The machine
will run a file system check on reboot so it will take a but longer
start after you do this. Hopefully you can eject the dvd after that.

Hi all!
I need help!
I was watching a dvd in my Pismo with Jaguar 10.2.6 and it just
stopped. It's frozen on a frame. This is a replacement drive I've had
under AppleCare for months.

Any ideas?

TIA,

Donald

Steve:

Popped the battery out and rebooted. Put the dvd back in and it plays
but I don't like the sound of the driveand this is a replacement
drive. I guess I'm off to the AppleStore this weekend. My AppleCare
lasts another week. Maybe I'm lucky in that the drive can be replaced.
I've been using my desktop and haven't been using the Pismo, so it's
better that I have a chance to investigate further while I'm just under
AppleCare.

Not sure if this was mechanical but I'll hope my local Apple geniuses
can help.

Thanks eveyone and thank you Steve.
