You can go faster than the bus speed, but not slower. For example. If your
Mac shipped with PC-66 you could install PC-66, PC-100 or PC-133.

But if your Mac shipped with PC-100 you could only install PC-100 or PC-133.

Re: TiBook memory in an iMac?

2003-10-12 Thread Wiebe Wilbers
Hi guys,

I have successfully used PC100 ram in a 500 Mhz iBook, which only needs
PC66, so I can definitely say it is possible with regard to the sped
difference issue. (pulled the module from a flat-panel iMac)

The RAM should work fine in a Lombard.

Lombard Memory

A follow up to a question I posed a week ago regarding orinoco gold
cards sold by Dell, it is working with my lombard however I had to use the
Orinoco drivers not the airport drivers to get it to work. I thought the
airport drivers were supposed to work on Orinoco cards.

Thanks for the help,

Mike Mac

OT: GHz TiBook memory in an iMac?

2003-10-12 Thread Boris Herman
Hi listers,

I am upgrading RAM on my GHz TiBook which came with 2 x 256 MB. Since I
have to remove both memory modules if I want to go to 1 Gb (or 2 Gb) I
will have two RAM modules extra of which one will go in a friend's snow
iBook. At first I thought I'd sell the second module but I've been told
that I can put this memory module also in the original iMac (Bondi).
Can anyone confirm or deny that?

Re: shutting down PB and heat

Definitely not silly, it's a good idea. But I thought I'd add my personal
experience with a PowerBook stand, the iCurve in my case, which I found
effective for increasing air circulation.

Here in fire-ravaged Kelowna over the summer, temperatures in my office
reached +100 for weeks. As long as my Pismo was on the stand, it was fine,
fan came on once in a while. If I set the Pismo down on a flat surface, the
fan came on after a few minutes of use.

As well, the stands have the added benefit of raising the screen to eye
level.

Cheers - Steve K.

Re: upgrading jaguar to panther on pismo (with no 10.2 discs)

2003-10-12 Thread Herbert Goodfriend
Apart from backing up all my data ( I have a firewire cd burner - any
advice welcomed ) what would be your recommendations for installing the
new OS - a complete reinstall and clean my hard drive, or just install
on top of what I am currently running?

I for one will not be installing 10.3 on top of 10.2 ("Upgrade
installation"). Hopefully, there will be an Archive and Install
option.

When I upgraded from 10.1.5 to Jaguar, I used the Upgrade
installation. The first bad omen was that some of Jaguar's features
had not been installed, e. g. the "Forward" button in Jag's finder
windows did not appear. Then things got very squirrelly--Internet
Connect didn't work unless it was quit and relaunched, and sometimes
the machine would not wake from sleep without a restart.

I then erased the partition on which OS X resides and installed
Jaguar. All the correct Finder features appeared but the other
problems persisted.

Apple Tech Support suggested resetting the Open Firmware and this
corrected the problems.

I've got to disagree a little here. The fan is on for a reason, because the
PowerBook is excessively hot. Shutting it down is the last thing I would do.

As in a car, the Powerbook will cool faster if you leave it running with the
fan on. Just stop working with it and the amount of heat generated will be
negligible, allowing the fan to do its job that much quicker.

And of course, when the 'Book is in deep sleep, the amount of heat generated
is almost nil.

Cheers - Steve K.

Re: shutting down PB and heat

2003-10-12 Thread Brandy
The Lombard (Bronze) is the only book I have owned the blew from heat,
it blew twice, after repairs I got in the habit of shutting it down if I
was not going to use it for extended period of time, currently it's shut
down and sitting on my office shelf since I prefer my TI. It still
fires up with no problems and will find a new home with my brother
in-law. Nary a problem with any book aside from the 2400 trying to defy
gravity, never did get a GLOD on that one, unless you define that as
Great Leap of Death! ;-)
