Re: Pismo processor

2003-10-20 Thread Thomas Ethen
I have a question for the list about switching processors in a Pismo. I have
acquired a 500MHZ G3 processor and want to exchange it for the 400MHZ
processor I now have in my Pismo. Is it a simple exchange, or do I have to
something other than just switching them?

Well I've got a Wallstreet with a 256 and a 64MB SODIMM. While there
are occasional glitches for the most part it runs fine.

Re: TiBook WiFi Reception

2003-10-20 Thread Clyde Kahrl
I have been putting off doing WiFi for a long time figuring
that the new standards would make it more attractive. So 11(g) is
more attractive, but its also more expensive and apparently the range
issues cut down on realworld speed. (I've already conceded that I'll
use hardwires for any file tranfers).

So I have to equip a new cheap Dell, a Lombard and a TiBook.
I need 100 feet of range to be happy, so I figure that I'll have to
use a PCMCIA card for my 550 TiBook, because the internal antenna is
so bad. I figure that since everybody likes Orinoco/lucent cards
those look fine, but I was wondering whether to go with a regular
router with a card stuck in it.

There was a review of the bigger and apparently more powerful
Asante router here: http://www.mymac.com/weeks/asante_2.20.03.shtml.

I like cheap equipment, but equipment that doesn't work is
expensive. So since the Asante router is now down to $139 does this
look like a good deal, or should I get an airport with the supposedly
nifty apple software and put some tin can antennas on it? (Like they
did here: http://home.earthlink.net/~wifi-shootout/)

Mac portable keyboard ? [OT?]

2003-10-20 Thread Tekno Liber
Hi all!

I am thinking about "upgrading" my Mac Portable by sticking a
PowerBook G3 (ADB) in it. Might sound funny, but I think it'll be a
pretty simple job.
However, I would really like to retain the keyboard and trackball.

Is this possible ? What is the interface for these ? Is it some sort
of internal ADB ?

Did you try to restart it using Command+Control+Power?

Did you leave it plugged for 48 hours?

If so, then, I guess your best bet is to take it for service. The PMU has
probably gone bad.

I've read a few times that when the main battery is completely discharged,
you have to plug the PowerBook for at least 48 hours to recharge the PRAM.
Then, if it doesn't start with Command+Control+Power, try to reset the PMU
again with the instructions from Apple:

1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Press and release the reset button located on the rear panel of the
computer between the external video and modem ports.
3. Wait 5 seconds.
4. Press the Power button to restart the computer.

wallstreet and 256mb ram modules

2003-10-20 Thread john hudak
In June 2003, I replaced two Ram modules (64mb/128mb) with two 256mb
modules from OtherWorldComputing (OWC) for my wallstreet g3
powerbook, and had been having a lot of freezes in both OS X and OS
9. I tried everything I could think of to try to fix the problem
(including many OS X repair utilities), but couldn't figure it out (I
assumed it was just an unfixable software problem). I just last
friday swapped out the two OWC Ram modules (after reading on this
forum that the wallstreets don't behave well with more than the apple
recommended 192mb max), and put in the old 64/128 modules, and the
freezing stopped (48 hours without a system freeze).

OWC is currently going to replace these modules with new ones, but
I'm wondering if there are other wallstreet owners that have this
configuration working at present. Being bad ram is really not easy
to test for (someone correct me if there is a reliable test
available), and that OWC says these modules work in the wallstreet,
perhaps also some people like me who have been scratching their heads
and thinking the problem was software related (which is what I
thought).

The stickers on the modules read:

have
been unable to recharge them. Since the batteries are about 3 years
old I
presumed it was time to invest in a new one. After spending $130 on a

battery I still have not been able to get the computer to turn on. I
believe
I have used every Power Manager reset procedure there is and every key

I could find in the literature and I still haven't been able to revive

Is it possible the small PRAM battery being dead will cause this
problem?

In the course of trying to keep a couple of youngsters entertained via DVDs
on my Pismo; I ran both my batteries to the fully discharge state and have
been unable to recharge them. Since the batteries are about 3 years old I
presumed it was time to invest in a new one. After spending $130 on a new
battery I still have not been able to get the computer to turn on. I believe
I have used every Power Manager reset procedure there is and every key combo
I could find in the literature and I still haven't been able to revive it.
Is it possible the small PRAM battery being dead will cause this problem?

Wallstreet starts running slowwww? Try this

2003-10-20 Thread Sid Barras
Hi all,
I noticed that when my pb wallstreet (OS 10.2.6; 512mb ram; 60gb hd;
original 266mhz G3 processor) is running lots of apps (powerpoint, word,
appleworks, photoshop 7, maybe a couple of other small apps) it starts to
run really slow, and gets really hot sitting on my lap, and I see that dang
beach ball way too often...

So I got this Idea: I went in the freezer and got one of those blue ice
thingies you put in a cooler to keep stuff cold (this one's a packet, its
flexible, even when frozen) I put it under the wallstreet, with a towel
between it and me, and presto! In just a few minutes, in the time it takes
the wallstreet to cool down clear up to the cpu, my apps start behaving much
better again.

Of course, it ain't the perfect solution-- that cpu is a heat engine! the
blue ice thingy is used up in about 15 minutes. I suppose I'll need to buy
several.. Sort of like rechargeable batteries, ya know?
