My son's new WS has the same problem, apparently.

I too am interested in any answers (in case someone might write off-list?0

Wallstreet sound card replacement

2003-10-27 Thread Doug Hinschberger
My boss' WS is showing signs of what appears to be a bad A/C connection on
the sound card. When charger/adapter is plugged in, battery doesn't charge.
Yo-yo adapter from an ibook doesn't charge it either. If they wiggle and
hold the connection they can get it to power up.

Called the local Apple repair store, and they suspect the sound card. I
found some fairly good instructions on the internet for taking the thing
apart, but it appears I'll really need to get into the guts to get to the
sound card.

How tough is it really? What special tools (screwdrivers) might I need? Is
it possible to re-solder cracked connections, or where is a good place to
find an inexpensive sound card?

Laurence:

Don't know the answer to your question; however, I'd recommend simply
purchasing a new screen on ebay (~$100) and then you'll have two
machines.. or, you could sell the intact Wallstreet and walk away with
some cash. Complete step-by-step instructions and specifications are
available here on how to replace the screen (an absolutely amazing
resource as far as I'm concerned):

I know they are different Macs, but as my Pismo is at work I can't
look at the screen to see how it differs from my Wallstreet.
What I would like to know is if the Wallstreet 14.1" TFT screen
would fit into a Lombard.
I have been offered a cheap Lombard with a dead screen and
as would rather have a Lombard than a Wallstreet, and rather
butcher a Wallstreet I would quite happily make the screen swap.
But is it at all possible ?

I had the G4 500mhz prosessor installed in my 400mhz Pismo & they used the
same heatsink the 400mhz came with. It runs cooler than it did before.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but sadly, you can't, unfortunately. The
screens may look similar but he video cable and pinout on the motherboards
are not the same...

Congrats Eric. Great drive (as per xlr8) and a very nice price. I'm using a
Samsung SN-324B in my Pismo and it too has been a super replacement for my
DVD. The faceplate is a bit smaller than the original Matshita one and is
rectangular; no curvy Apple design, but it fit without modification. Also
has a raised eject button (I never did like Apple's recessed one).
Though for anyone having eject button problems, there are shareware and
freeware apps (e.g. Eject) that let you use a Function key to open the tray.

Just a quick question Eric: could you provide instructions on taking apart
the caddy for the LG drive (offlist if you prefer)? The Matshita one is very
easy to take apart, but I haven't figured out the LG one yet and I'm afraid
of breaking something when "forcing" it open. In short, how do you open the
LG caddy in order to remove the DVD and install a new drive? Thanks.

Chris

P.S. Another good option for a replacement Combo is the Sony CRX820, a
24x8x24x8x Combo that also has a handy switch right on the drive that you
can use to set it as Master (makes it possible to boot while holding down
the C key and also could/should resolve powerbook wake-from-sleep problems,
etc.).
