Lombard, Firewire PCMCIA card, and iPod

2003-10-31 Thread Larry Dersch

Calling all experts...

I'm still scratching my head trying to get my Lombard to recognize a 2nd
generation iPod. I've done the 9.2.2 thing, I'm using iTunes 2.0.4, I used
a friends iMac to make sure the unit was ok, and to check the "enable
firewire" box, my vst pcmcia card does show up on the desktop...I think
I've done everything I've been told by various sources, the iPod has
version 1.3, etc, etc...but to no avail! Has anyone out there had any
experience with this they could share. I know it's possible to do, but
it's not happening. Any help? Help!

Extremely good karma to whoever could help...I'm really quite desperate.

Larry

Nope. I manage a service center and we *can't* sell them. There are some
add on parts that are considered CIP (customer installable parts) by Apple
that we selllike a superdrive for a G4 tower. We also sell the
superdrive for the 12" powerbooks, but we have to install it.

I've lived over 65 years without iTunes. I plan on doing the same
thing for the second half.

that it will run on machines that are years old. 18 months is a LIFETIME in
the world of computing. If you can't handle that fact then you need a
reality check. You shouldn't be biting the hand that feeds you (aka suing
apple). All that I sgoing to do is hurt us all in the long run.
First, I think most lawsuits (including probably the current Apple one)
do more to line the pockets of the lawyers than accomplish anything for
the claimants.
But after that, I find it a tad two-faced of Apple that they will support
Windows 2000 for iTunes and the Music Store (an OS which is much older
than MacOS 9.x), but not Mac users running MacOS 9.x. As I wrote in
feedback to Apple, it's like telling those who haven't been able to
afford the hardware and software upgrades "You'd be better off buying a
Wintel box so far as being able to access the Music Store." And yes,
there's some inaccuracy in that analogy, but it is arrogant of Apple to
provide support for an older Windoze OS when they choose not to support
MacOS 9.x users. It's like a slap in the face, IMHO. And I suspect the
main reason is that Emporer Steve wants to force more MacOS 9.x users to
upgrade and line Apple's pockets. As I said in my feedback, I may just go
find a used copy of Jaguar and NOT line Apple's pockets out of mine.

I believe Apple is on the right track, they have been receiving great
reviews from many PC industry sources. The over-all reviews have been very
positive in these "corporate" technical sites, magazines and reports on OSX.
I personally think it is the greatest operating system they have ever made
and was glad to finally leave OS9 behind.

I did have to sell all of my peripherals and purchase new ones and am
currently upgrading all the software, but I think it is worth every cent I
have spent. Lets face it, even the peripherals are better, my Epson scanner
SCSI costs $1400 when I bought it and it scans at only 600 dpi (and is s
slow), the new Microtek is 2400 dpi and I paid about $100 new. This goes for
the new printer, the firewire external hard drive, etc, all are better,
faster and cost less.

I think Apple should be applauded on their decision to move to a modern
operating system. It was a big move, totally rewriting a new system from the
ground up took vision to make it successful and guts to do it in the first
place.

My $0.02...

Here is a list of companies that sell parts, rebuild and service Powerbooks:

Wegenermedia.com
Powerbookguy.com
Pbparts.com
Powerbooktech.com
Powerbookmedic.com

I would think that any Apple center would not sell internal parts, even the
pram battery for self install (unless they have changed in the last year).

Unfortunately, all of the above companies reside here in the US, but do ship
internationally.

After having checked on the possibility of shipping my G3MT to my new

Is there anyone that has a PB G3 (pretty much maxed out) or better

I have an ASP report from the unit I can send to anyone interested.

A similar situation with mine was resolved by the replacement of the Power
Manager module. I had to send it to MacResQ to get it fixed. There are
several places you can order batteries from, A Google search will give you
them. For other parts there's http://www.pbparts.com here's what I would
suggest you try.
1. Buy a known good PRAM battery and a known good regular Battery.
2. Install both in one of your machines and see if any of the various
revival techniques work.
3. Cycle through all 3 of your machines.
4. If you can't get one revived. Use the teardown guide (a Google will
locate a copy) to take 2 of the machines apart down to the logic board.and
swap sound, inverter and power modules sequentially into the 3rd machine to
see if you can get one running.
5. If all else fails, put one together with your best estimate of good
parts, take it to an Apple Dealer, I believe they have a flat rate repair
fee of $300 to make one whole again. MacResQ has a $99 deal but that only
gets you a diagnosis, you then have to pay parts and labor for whatever they
fix. (In my case, that ended up a little more than another 225$) so I ended
up paying a little more than I would have paid Apple, but considering where
I would have had to go to get it to Apple, the cost was about the same.

Rejuvenating Dead Pismos

2003-10-31 Thread Josh Watson

Hi all,

This is my first post to the list - I've had a PB 5300 and a 190
before, and have just bought 3 dead pismo's. Two of them look
intact (I've looked under the keyboard), one is certainly dead.
They do nothing if given power, and wondered if anyone had any
tips for getting them to power up - will a Pismo power up
without a PRAM battery/HDD/DVD/etc attached, or if i remove some
boards?

I've already tried resetting the Power manager with the button
on the back and tried disconnecting the battery/mains and Li-ion
battery for a few minutes.

Does anyone know a good source for Pismo spares either in the
UK, or who can ship to the UK. Where could I get a replacement
PRAM battery? Would I have to go to an AppleCentre or could I
just get one in an electrical retailer. Would an AppleCentre
sell me one to fit myself.

Cheers

Yeah, that wake from sleep problem is a known one on Pismos. Have had it
a few times with my Pismo. Never had any rhyme nor reason to explain why
it does some times and not others.

Re: G3/Mac OS X Settlement

My rant,

Jim

Swann Cardbus and G3 Lombard

2003-10-31 Thread lists
Hello Folks !

This is my first post to the list.

Anyone using Swann Firewire Cardbus? I am trying to make it work with a G3 Lombard,
but it always freezes the computer at startup ( before any extension loading ), and If
I insert on pcmcia slot after the startup, the computer didn't recognize any drive
attached to them.

I tested the Swann Cardbus with a Titanium 500 and os 9 and worked ok.

I tested other PCMCIA Card ( hammerfall DSP Audio card ) on the Lombard and it worked
fine too.

Any suggestions?

Lombard G3 333 os 9.2.2

thx

chris

Re: Cardbus carriage for Wallstreet

2003-10-31 Thread Bob
I've replaced mine on my Wallstreet. I think the trick is to gently,
patiently insert the cards. When I get jamm'n on the computer
multi-tasking, this can be easily forgotten.

Also, there are places which sell them new other than ebay.
