Everymac.com usually has prices. I'm not sure how up to date they are, but
for the most part they seem good.

Re: how to boot a pismo

Re: FW disk mode crashed host

2004-01-27 Thread Andrew Kershaw
My reply doesn't really answer the OP's questions, but . . .

I've not used FW target disk mode, but for fast file transfers I was
mighty impressed with filesharing using TCP/IP-over-FW. I haven't done
any timed benchmarks but Finder copies between a pair of Pismos is
_fast_fast_fast_. Perhaps doing the filecopies using TCP/IP-over-FW might
work out better?
Dan K
(who's been waiting for an opportunity to mention TCP/IP-over-FW :-)
Whoa, wait a minute... You can do TCP/IP over FireWire?

I remember there being some discussion back when FireWire was new
about doing AppleTalk on FireWire (though I quickly grew uninterested
in that idea and don't know if it's possible today or not), but if
I've heard anything about TCP/IP over FW, it's just a quiet mumble in
some hidden memory...

Please do spill the beans, Dan!

Peace,

Interesting point. I know the G4 hardly outperformed the G3 at the same
clock speed unless the software was specifically written to take advantage
of the G4 AltiVec engine.

Anyway, this sounds like a question to be asking the guy at BareFeats.com

Ok, what I want to know is this:
How much faster, roughly, is a G5, compared to a G3?
I remember 'back in the day' when we considered that a 68040 at 50MHz
was roughly twice as powerful as a same-speed 68030. The PPC 603e chip
in my Powerbook 1400 was supposedly about twice as powerful as a

But now hardware has evolved. Can anyone tell me how long it takes to

For a dual 2 GHz, we should be down to about 1:1 parity for compressing

Externally the machines look the same for the most part. Internally they are totally
different. Different inverter boards, different display, different power scheme.
They are nothing alike internally.

Not possible. They are not interchangeable.
That's curious, any information as to why this might be? Apple didn't
change the form factor at that point, so while I am not the person
asking, it would be interesting to know why.

There were changes to the logic board layout that make them
non-interchangeable. For example, the VGA port has been replaced with a
DVI video port, not in exactly the same place. The display is
different, so the internal wiring for it is probably also. The external
form-factor is the same, but many of the internal components were
changed.

Just my $0.02.

Now comes the shuttle exercise. Presume the new Pbook comes
pre-installed, maybe even with the bundled software. Can I CC clone
all the contents of my Flattop iMac to the Pbook or should I follow a
different method. Same goes for my wife's 400 Mhz SE iMac once the
Flattop has been cleared and reformatted.
I would reinstall my applications and then move my home folder over to
the new Powerbook. I did this when I upgraded from Jaguar to Panther,
and I did not have many of the problems that other people had with
their upgrade installs. There's a possibility that OS X might install
some extensions/drivers differently depending on the hardware you have
installed on a machine.

Re: Passwords

2004-01-27 Thread James
Dear List,
Does anyone know of a good password-saver
program? I have found a couple, but none for OS X.
Thanks.
Pastor has never let me down. It is simple, safe and free.

   James
