Looking for a Pismo

2004-02-12 Thread Ryan Coleman
Hey listers.

In accordance with the one sale or purchase request post per year rule
I am putting my query to get a Pismo out on the G-Books list. As a list
member since 1999 (originally on the powerbooks list) this is my first
time. Obviously, don't respond to the list. Please email me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am looking for:
Powerbook 2000
500 MHz
512 MB RAM
HDD doesn't matter
working DVD, Superdrive would be preferred
well functioning LCD. a few dead pixels are ok
good condition (I would like to see pics if possible of the 'book)
Let me know what other items you have that you will sell with it.

My budget: $700. I can pay by money order, hopefully, by Friday. Cash if
local.
Zip code: 55104 (St Paul, MN) -- Local people also preferred
Please let me know.

PB G3 Blacks out, won't restart

2004-02-12 Thread Kevin Groder
Hi,

I have a Wallstreet 300 mHz running OSX. It has been working fine until
recently when it started to simply go black. It then will not restart
without much effort... using force restart, pressing the power on key,
jiggling the power plug. Weird. When it does finally start up the
battery monitor shows the battery to be totally depleted.

Any help?

When this happens, are you running on batteries?

If you are, your battery is the culprit, you should replace it.

Re: Can Wallstreet G3/300 run under OS 9.2?

2004-02-12 Thread Luis Autrique
Matthew,

I thought that the main differences between 9.1 9.2 an above were
just improvements to allow it to run in classic mode with X, but not
real improvements if you are working under Mac OS 9. If I'm wrong,
could someone let me know?

Try this:
Install 9.1 first. Install the 9.2.1 update and restart with the shift
key held down (extensions off). Install the 9.2.2 update and restart.
This worked for me.
You may have to copy the 9.2.2 update to your HD before you do the
9.2.1 install/restart with extensions off. Then run the 9.2.2 update
from the HD (I think the CD-ROM extension is off at this point).

I'm running 9.2.2 and 10.2.8 on the Wallstreet and 9.2.2 and 10.3 on
the dual G4 with no problems.

I'm just guessing but could the problem have to to with having more RAM?
I had 192 Mb in my Wallstreet when I went to 9.2.2 as did Amanda.
Shawn had trouble going to 9.2.2 with his Wallstreet with 512 Mb.
How much RAM do you have Mathew?
I'm remembering a thread about installing OSX on Lombards, people were
having trouble if the memory was maxed out, reducing the RAM to the OEM
amount allowed the installation after which the extra RAM could be replaced.
Could the Wallstreet have the same problem?
Easy enough to find out.

2004-02-12 Thread Wayne Schneck
Kevin:

This same problem cropped up with my Wallstreet. In the beginning, it
was only one or two forced restarts, then it was fine. By the time I
ripped all my hair out in frustration, it was taking up to 30 (yes, 30)
forced restarts. I went through the usual suspects; ram, processor
board, re-install system, etc. The culprit was the PMU unit, located
under the left palm rest. Since it required a complete disassembly of
the computer, I opted to purchase a new one, but there are several
companies that replace this for a flat repair charge plus part costs.

Hope this helps.

Here are the companies I found which repair powerbooks:

powerbookguy.com
pbparts.com

Most of these companies also sell pulled parts in working condition if
you feel like undertaking the repair yourself. I think the flat rate

When I used PowerBook Parts, they would install the part at no charge if you
were willing to send your PowerBook to them. So, the total cost was the part
plus shipping, which I think was the most reasonable charges I've found back
then. Of course, they may have changed their policy since then, but I
thought it was worth mentioning...

It will probably not work, since the Pismo's cable is a little shorter

whether I stay or go.
That said though, I still feel the need to post this about my
departure from the list. Quite frankly, Kyle's tone whenever a
thread has to be killed has completely rubbed me the wrong way.
On mailing lists and bulletin boards I frequent, I expect the
moderators to maintain and, when possible, improve the tone. On
this list, it seems that whenever Kyle steps in to actively
manage an aspect of the list, the tone deteriorates.
I recognize the amount of work it takes to manage a list like
this one; however, it doesn't take any additional work to do so
in a more pleasant manner. Perhaps the difficulty in keeping
killed threads dead would be alleviated by a different tone in
the initial request to kill the thread. Catching more flies with
honey, and all that.
So I'll be unsubscribing from this list, though I'll still be on
the other two LEM list's I'm subscribed to. I'll get my g-book
advice and information somewhere else from now on.

Re: Uninstall for Panther

2004-02-12 Thread Wayne Schneck
Hey Everybody:

Does anyone know if there is a reliable uninstall program that works
for Panther, or is it built into the system itself (like Windows). I
have some trial stuff that I installed and the discs do not have an
uninstall function. Back in os9, you could use Spring Cleaning if you
were very careful about what you were deleting, is there something else
anyone has used and can recommend?

Thanks.

findbycontent

2004-02-12 Thread Frank Cornew
After transitioning to Panther shortly after its launch, I haven't
been satisfied with the find by content performance under Panther. It
worked very well for me under 9.2.2 on my Pismo, to the point where I
depend on it. I am being far more meticulous in filing my work since
it just izznt the same under Panther.

Background: Booted and installed from the Panther distribution disks.
Did not erase or reformat the drive, don't know if drivers were
updated. Journaling off. ~60GB drive half full. Only one language
selected.

Indexing: Attempts to index the whole drive fail after a day or so of
churning. Knew it would take some time, but this is absurd. Not
possible to reattempt indexing without trashing files in
Libraries/Indexes/findbycontent. Have successfully indexed specific
directories. Have repaired permissions (iteratively), checked other
maintenance routines, switched users, disk utility, etc. Am waiting
for the latest disk warrior.

Finding: Works, but slow on the selected directories. I get the
impression that it worked faster and with better hits under 9.2.2. Is
the index automatically updated, or do I need to do this periodically?

Do I need to backup and wipe the drive and start from scratch, or is
this just the way things are?

F.

Just do it manually. It's a Mac, after all ;-)

With *most* programs, just drag the program icon to the trash. This
deals with 99.9% of the problem.

Preferences live in your home Library/Preferences folder.

Some programs will install things into your home Library folder, too,
like Adobe's support files, or into the Application Support folder
there.

A very few programs will install things into the system
Library/Application Support folder, though that is intended for system
applications only.

Programs more complex than that should have their own uninstaller.

Wallstreet dead? How to resuscitate?

2004-02-12 Thread Jack Countryman
I've had a bottom of the line G3 series Wallstreet given to me. I helped
get it to boot some time back and pulled data off of it...so I know it had a
dead pram battery then. I eventually got it to boot then by leaving it
plugged in for a while...but this time its sat plugged in for over 24 hours
and still nothing. Ideas on ways to get it going since I don't have other
batteries for it? Thanks in advance.

Backing Up Itunes Music to La Cie External

2004-02-12 Thread tivo
Hi, folks. I recently purchased a 120gig La Cie external HD that is attached
by Firewire to my G3 iBook OSX, 900Mhz.

I thought I could simply drag the iBook desktop hard drive icon onto the La
Cie icon on my desktop and everything would be copied. I then copied all
desktop items into a separate folder on the external drive.

Is this the correct way to do this to back up the iBook? When I click on
iTunes on the La Cie it opens the iTunes panel that is in my iBook dock. One
of the main reasons I purchased the external drive is for music (I lost a HD
once, AND the music went with it; I wish to avoid this occurring again).

How can I tell if the music library is on the external drive? With iTunes in
OS9 I was able to access the files themselves and duplicate, remove, etc.,
items; this doesn't seem to be possible with OSX and the newer iTunes.

Can I ( should I?) leave the external drive on (all the time?) when the
iBook is operating, and is there an automatic save to the external drive
when I save to the IBook (same Word files for instance or import of an album
to iTunes), or must other paths be constructed?

As you can see, this is a first outing here and I don't have much info or
understanding. Anything guidance would be appreciated.

Thank you, Tivo

If you want to clone your iBook drive to make it bootable, then you should
use Carbon Copy Cloner. This will create an exact duplicate of your iBook
hard drive that you will be able to use to startup the iBook. I think there
are some options to synchronize an already cloned drive to its clone within
Carbon Copy Cloner, but I'm not sure as I have never used it.

iTunes doesn't have the ability to maintain a backup copy like Word. Think
of somebody who has over 29,000 songs and you'll realize why!

However, that being said, I regularly synchronize my iTunes music folder
from my Pismo to my PowerMac using shameless plug my shareware
synchronization tool, File Synchronization /shameless plug. There is the
iTunes music library file that needs to be synchronized and, of course, the
iTunes music folder.

I'd be happy to answer any additional questions you might have regarding the
synchronization process at nemesys at verizon dot net.

Adhesive for Foot pads?

CCC offers the option of cloning only the things you want. If you are
only copying documents in your user folder, it's probably not necessary
to use something like CCC (which also copies invisible files). I'm not
certain about this, but I think it's safer to use CCC if you're also
wanting full copies of user preferences, libraries, etc. (some of which
are invisible files and may not be copied using the Finder).

Must be something with your setup. Find by content works lightning fast

Andrew,

I thought about the RAM amount and swapped out for the original RAM
with no luck. So I tried the 9.1/9.2.1/9.2.2 path and it worked. Don't
know why, but I'm happy with the end result. Worth a try.

I'm just guessing but could the problem have to to with having more

I had 192 Mb in my Wallstreet when I went to 9.2.2 as did Amanda.
Shawn had trouble going to 9.2.2 with his Wallstreet with 512 Mb.
How much RAM do you have Mathew?
I'm remembering a thread about installing OSX on Lombards, people were
having trouble if the memory was maxed out, reducing the RAM to the
OEM amount allowed the installation after which the extra RAM could be
replaced.
Could the Wallstreet have the same problem?
Easy enough to find out.

I wonder if this has approached the levels of disaster that a class

Hi, List,
I got stuck with a Lombard with the failed L2 cache in an ebay

I wonder if this has approached the levels of disaster that a class
action suit against Apple is in order? Any Lombard owners interested?
Please answer off list.

Advice on Firewire Enclosure

2004-02-12 Thread markemmanuel
I'm in the market to buy a firewire enclosure. I plan to install a
3.5 200GB hard drive in it. It's mainly for backups, store music, and
documents. I'll probably use it maybe once a day for an hour or so.
I'm looking for a high quality low cost enclosure. In about six
months, I'll be buying a second hard drive and enclosure to mirror the
first firewire drive as insurance.

Any recommendations for the enclosure? Thanks.
