Wallstreet Powerlogix G3 500 vs Sonnet G4 500
I recently moved to a 15 aluminum, but I am still using at time the Wallstreet w/Bluechip 500 Mhz. I was wondering to replace the Bluechip with a Sonnet G4. Has anybody a direct experience? Is there a noticeable speed gain? Ben -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... MacOS X.2.3 install from DVD on Pismo?
I recently heard that some of the newer 'Books use a DVD install disc rather than the CDROM of the full retail box (I'm talking about Jaguar here - just running a little behind). I've seen one of the DVD(ROM?)s offered at a good price, but am wondering if it should work on my Pismo. Has anyone attempted/installed from these (all-on-one) DVDs? The disc appears to be the grey color (OEM?) like the eMac CDROM sets that OWC has been selling for a while, and I think it's originally from a PBG4-14 inch. Can the DVD be used in my Pismo's DVDROM drive, or does anyone know *for sure* (actually tried it yourself, successfully or not)? Not 'a friend of a friend' anecdotal, but actual, first-hand experience, please. Also, if it indeed can mount on the Pismo'a drive, can I backup the DVD's contents to (a couple of) CDROMs on my burner (after making a disc image from it, I'm sure)? Any and all personal experiences you can share will be quite appreciated. Thanks, Jim Rohde -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... VST Zip MCE CDRW
Hi Listers I have a frustrating problem I am unable to solve. I have a Wallstreet 233 (w /cache) OS 9.2.2. I had supplied with it a floppy which I use in LH bay and the CD rom in the RH side, both of these perform OK.As the floppy has its limitations regarding backup etc I decided to add a Iomega(VST) 100 Mb zip drive. Before I got around to trying to use it an MCE CDRW for the Wallstreet became available for me to buy, so I went for it. So now I have the Zip to go in the LH and the CDRW to go in the RH, correct you may say, unfortunately the Wallstreet does not want to know. With the zip inserted and the WS booted it freezes when the Iomega icon appears during its boot up stage. The only option is to restart and quickly remove the Zip then it boots OK. If I turn off all the Iomega extensions then proceed as above it freezes when trying to launch the Desktop. As for the CDRW no problem there regarding booting to the desktop, but when any media is inserted ie: a programme installation disc, it rotates in to life then stops with out launching the disc Icon on to the desktop. I tried boot from a Norton disc with the Zip in and it boots to the desktop. With media inserted I requested to find missing disc and it did so. Unfortunately this is not possible with the CDRW as you need the drive in order to run the Norton disc. Do I need any new drivers in order to use the drives or are there just conflicts which need to be sorted. If the former a visit to the respective sites should resolve this, if the latter where should I be looking to find the conflicts. Is the zip problem with it being a VST model not Iomega as the internal is an Iomega drive. Your ideas would be most appreciated John Abraham (UK) -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... The Fujitsu drive I ordered from Other World Computing absolutely would not boot. After a lot of trouble shooting, OWC determined the drive was not compatible with my 'Book. iChat Requirements and Hacks
From: Laurent Daudelin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yup, finally installed Panther on both the G-4 powerbook and the Pismo. Flawless, swift, excellent. For iChat AV to work, does it require certain hardware? On the Pismo, it said I didn't have the right gear. I need more than firewire? No, you would actually need more speed. iChat AV requires a G3 processor of at least 600MHz. I'm using the shareware iChatUSBCam from Ecamm Network at Ecamm.com to remove this limitation. -Laurent. From: Nikon's World [EMAIL PROTECTED] I believe that you need at least a 600MHz G3 to use video chat. Hi Laurent, Nikon, That's for the heads up. Is there another hack aside from iChatUSBCam wherein I can go in and simply edit the install or load requirement using a text editor? I have investigated the plist file and other files and can't find the check code. I've also googled and most hacks refer to iChatUSBCam. Want something more root I can perform myself... Any ideas? Powerlogix vs Sonnet
In my understanding the only real difference between the G3 and G4 is the whole velocity engineie the latest OSX programs like Photoshop will take advantage of that but that most average applications probably won't justify the expensethen again if the expense isn't a major issue...wellit's always fun to tinker. ed j On Apr 4, 2004, at 2:30 PM, G-Books wrote: G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I checked Apple's web site for any updates and it doesn't list any needed. Tried the Firmware updates anyhow but it states they are not needed for this machine. Any ideas?
