The difference is whether and in to what extent the company in question does supply real value to the customers. I feel Apple give more usefulness per dollar than do MS, Intel et al. Feel free to disagree, but I really fell that way. The fact that Apple want to make money is no excuse to let them get away with treating customers badly. In fact, I propose that they *lose business* because of it and *make less money* by not serving up to the standard I believe we Mac users rightfully deserve for our previous support and for making sure we keep it up in the future. Second, in the old days with OS9 I used applications like Disklock. Is anybody aware of third party security applications for OSX. There is GPG, which is free, open source, and includes a file-encryption component. http://www.gnupg.org/ there are graphical OSX interfaces to it. PGP offers a wide range of products, depending on the scale of your enterprise: www.pgp.com Their Personal Desktop offers a 'disk encryption' system, I don't know the details of how it works. That's $50, PGP has a well deserved reputation for security. PuzzlePalace is a file-level encryption tool for OSX, $15 shareware, uses the built-in SSH encryption libraries. It operates as a service for Cocoa Apps according to the docs, so it's reasonably well integrated. http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_hill/puzzlepalace.html You can do something like FileVault, but manually (without the serious risk of losing everything) by using Disk Utility (under 10.3) or Disk Copy (under 10.2 and lower), to create an encrypted disk image, one for each project or client, if you would like. Then double-click on a disk image, enter the password work on stuff, and go. And I found this fascinating page while Googling this topic. Re: iBook HD wierdness
I've had exactly the opposite problem of yours, trying to install OS 9.2 coming with the same iBook as yours on a Lonbard and a TiBook 1GHz. I get the message this program cannot run on this computer. The workaround is make a copy of the OS 9 after having installed it fresh on the iBook, then copying to the other machine. OS 9 runs fine afterwards, standalone and clasic mode. Making the copy bootable allows me to boot from the CD as well. So I guess your HD is not the culprit. cheers, gianfranco I have an iBook 60 (16VRAM) with a 20 GB hard drive. I have installed Panther just fine, but trying to install OS9 does not work at all. I get an error message saying this program cannot run on this computer. I have original discs for 9.04 and 9.2, but I get the same message with both. In fact, it won't start up with the 9.04 disc, I assume because this 'Book was released after 9.1 came out. I can get OS9 running by copying the System Folder over from my TiBook - Classic works and I can select it as a startup drive too. I ran the installer when hooked up in FW Target mode, but I can't run the updaters to 9.2.2 at all. I also tried my iMac 9.2.2 installer CD, but that wouldn't run either. Any suggestions, short of replacing the drive? I don't want to take this thing apart again, I did that recently to change out the CD with a Combo drive. And another thing - this computer always thinks it is spanning monitors in OS9 (which the iBook isn't supposed to be capable of). I lose the cursor and after slapping my forehead go into the CP to drag the monitors apart each time. I tried trashing the Monitors preferences, but the next startup I got the same thing. --- JSH TiBook -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Issues with Microsoft

Well there's always people who say this or that but I personally was there to see Bill Gates' greed and shoddy quality control of the products he promotes deprive people of their lives. At NIH I was there for the gear up of the Y2K issue and the huge installation of Windows NT 4.0 for our mostly Dell and Compaq PCs (The Macs were going through their own hell of System 7.5). My area of responsibility was all of the outpatient research areas and clinics in the Clinical Center and I was well plugged in with what was going on throughout much of NIH at the time. Anyway, I was there to see with my own eyes how much money had to be diverted to dealing with extrem bugs in NT including delightful lies told about how it was Y2K safe with Service Patch 3 and then 4 (God but they were both nightmares) and 5 and 6. SP 3 and 4 were the worst and would often completely scramble parts of the OS on Compaq machines rendering them unusable and sometimes unrecoverable. Essentially we were lied to when they sold us the original installs, I think it was at SP 2, claiming it would do much more than it really could and was much more crash proof and Y2K safe than it really was and then lied to with each and every new service pack. The total man hours added up to several million dollars that should have been spent on patient care and research. What blew me away is that we continued to purchase MORE of these deffective software products. It all went to perpetuating Bill Gates' bank account. For those who feed some line of BS about MS products have facilitated and advanced research, I say that's a crock. Nothing that the Windows units did at that time was any better or more helpful in the work environment than what the Macs were doing in that arena and the windows machines cost a significant amount more to keep running. In Mid 1999 I was hired on at the US Institute of Peace, perhaps the only all Mac US Gov. body still in existance and we spent not a single dime on Y2K pervention or failures. We were the only Fed. Gov agency that could claim that. I may agree with some people on this or that right wing or left wing political topic but on this I am firm, Gates' greed and poor quality control is a horrible thing that really shows me the overall nature of their business which is make money and maintain revinue stream. I have doubts as to Bill Gates' genuine public interest or honesty. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
